I think that Sony has impacted it for the better, or else Sega and Nintendo would be getting away at their childish games still, and Sony has had these games too (Spyro/Crash), and they basically made the gaming industry evolve into a mature gaming industry. |

I never really thought on this, but i think you're right. Sony really maturated Video Games, which is both bad and a good thing. In the good i'm talking about that videogames started to be for all ages, shure sonic and mario weren't only for kids, but thats who loved them the most. In the bad i'm talking about the fact that i think they kinda killed the tousands of fun gaming mascots, and made all the companies start produce most violent games.

Well for the violent thing, that was probably more due to Microsoft then Sony, but Sony did help. Before Microsoft came the only two that really come to mind is House of the Dead and Resident Evil. |

House of the Dead brings me in to my point on this conversations. That in the days of the Genesis/SNES wars there were battles over weather or not to allow blood and the more violent finishing moves into Mortal Kombat. Nintendo went the family friendly route, and Sega went the full on violence route. After that it was a while before Nintendo would allow blood in games on their systems. I believe they were both on the same page by MKII. I would say Sega initiated the 'maturing' of games, because several of the other games on Genesis were already heading this direction. I feel that upon Sega's fall, that Sony almost directly took over their roll and continued this process. It feels like Microsoft kind of jumped in there near the end, and didn't really take anyones spot. Nintendo kept being nintendo. That all being said, the 360 is still my favorite current gen console. To make it shorter, I think it was Sega that started this trend, not Sony. But Sony didn't hurt it any. |

I think Sony did a great job at making the game industry outreach to more people, and having more mature games (not always meaning violent). I do, however, find myself enjoying games labeled as "childish" sometimes more than one's people think I should be playing. I really don't care if it's "mature" or childish". If it's good, then I play (unless it's MEGA-VIOLENT and filled with tons of language. I am still only 16

For example, the Crash and Spyro games are my favorite PS1 games. But I love a good RPG or shooter, too!

The bottom line is that games are all about the enjoyment you get out of either collecting or playing them. So if you like a childish game, and someone has something to say about it pay it no heed. I know several people in their mid 20's that play pokemon games. Those are made for and directly marketed for children. There is nothing wrong with playing a game you consider fun. I get tons of enjoyment during 'the hunt' as I like to call it, going through flea markets, yard sales, and thrift stores looking for that one NES cart they might have that isn't in my collection yet. I don't really even play the games when I get them. Just check them to make sure they work.(NES carts are durable, and I haven't found a non-working one yet lol) I also get tons of enjoyment playing my XBOX 360. PS3 when I occasionally get on it is fun, and playing games like Professor Layton on the DS is fun for me. The same with reading, if a childrens book brings you enjoyment then read it. I love Curious George books, but they are not at all targeted at a 30 year old like myself. Looking through them just brings me back to when I was a kid. That doesn't mean I don't enjoy rocking back with a great novel every night before I go to bed either. |

I takes me a while to play some games I get during "the hunt" lol. Unless I've been wanting to play them real bad.

I think sony, or at least the company's developing for them, had a huge impact on gaming. next to the master system(or even the amiga ) the ps1 is one of my fav consoles.I think its the fact that there was every genre in complete abundance on he console. the first person shooters werent that great IMO but the rpg's, puzzle games, 3rd person shooters and racing games were pretty much 2nd to none. Im not sure about the maturing of consoles though. As eSkilliam pointed out it was actually sega that really matured the console market. PC games were really where all the real mature games were at the time though. |

Sony's biggest contribution was bringing a formidable competition to break up a console war between Sega and Nintendo, and as others have mentioned, it brought more adult-oriented games to the market. Mature games existed before, but Sony's platform certainly helped to popularize them. I also think that Sony's leap into the console market was a main contributing factor to Sega leaving the console business. The Staturn and Dreamcast were both excellent systems, but the Playstation's dominance and the upcoming release of the PS2 both pushed these systems to the back burner. If Sony hadn't come out with the Playstation, or they had partnered with Nintendo as originally planned, I'll bet we'd still see consoles from Sega to this day. |

Well I think that the mature games before were mostly like: "Oh Sega has the better version of Mortal Kombat, don't get the SNES one" kind of stuff. But Sony brought that to a new level and made the games still really bloody but also really good. As for the Sega being in the console business still, as much as I like Sega, I think it's good that they stopped making consoles, because Sega probably would have matched the PS3 if they were still in, and could be killing both Nintendo and Sony (Microsoft if they were in too) with their first party titles. |

Sony really helped push the market by adding a competitor that had a lot of money and great ambition. I never liked Sony when they first got, but they have grown on me. Still, I am a little bitter that they helped push out SEGA. Sony has been pretty instrumental in helping the industry grow into what is has become currently. They helped make games "cool" enough for average consumers to purchase and use. The PSX was a remarkable success, as well as the PS2 (obviously). It's hard to imagine a current game industry without them. Even if Sony decided to pull out the Playstation brand as of tomorrow, the have left their mark. Edited by sushi_b, Oct 24 2010, 12:42 AM.

In my opinion, Sony took a good look at the Genesis/Mega Drive, and saw why it was so great, that it not only had sonic games, but games of all genre's, maturity level, and dificulty. Sony just ended up taking this to a whole new level It does help that they got awesome companies like square, enix, capcom, konami, and all the other companies that were tired of sega/nintendo. I mean, look at all the working designs titles the saturn got. So many more than sony. But sony happened to pick the company up after it was fed up with sega, and they got Lunar. I'm sure marketing-wise, the saturn would have traded most of its U.S. releases for a port of Lunar. So, imo, a mixture of good tactic and luck allowed sony to bring a whole new level of console gaming |

I think Sony is also to thank for Microsoft entering the console business, giving us the Xbox and Xbox 360 we enjoy so much. I remember reading that it was the success of the Playstation that got Microsoft interested in consoles, something they had not previously considered because PC games were doing so well. |

Sony brought a massive money injection to the industry. This is the single most important thing they have done and continue to do. This is the root to the OP's meaning on they matured the market. Prior to Sony, big publishers were pretty much at the will of Nintendo or Sega here in the US. Sony not only essentially ended console war between Sega and Nintendo but they offered smaller developers the ability to be published by Sony for Sony. Sony had already been in the home market in Japan for years, remember the MSX. Nintendo, Sega and NEC had vice grips on the gaming market world wide and Sony smashed it open to much of the big N's chagrin. Nintendo got hung up on seeking to monitize their market through carts and blundered. The N64 was a complete sales disaster, despite fan love for the system. Sega got hung up trying to bring out the latest, greatest hardware and got burned. The saturn was far too hard to program for. When Sony Plastation came out they put themselves in a great position. It followed a very programmer friendly platform that had existed for years in the SGI 3d market. It was easier to port games to N64 so publishers spread focus and developers could re-use a lot of code. Sega had to catch up to Sony and it really made the Saturn look aweful at doing what the PS1 did naturally. That really hurt them in the US and at this point and time the US market was exploding the money coffers of the game companies. Anyways, Sony was the catalyst for what we have today directly or indirectly. |
