The Hobbit; Discuss the upcoming adaptions of Tolkien's 'The Hobbit'

These aren't the droids we're looking for.

Back on October 16th the production was officially greenlit with Peter Jackson once again in the director's chair.

They've also revealed some of the actors cast in the films.

"The Hobbit" Casting News

I was hoping Martin Freeman would win the Bilbo role ^^ Of course, the great Sir Ian McKellin will be reprising his role as Gandalf. The rest of the photos are of the actors cast as some of the dwarves; they're kind of hard to judge at this point, as they'll be heavily costumed in the film, and I'm not familiar with their work elsewhere, but I'm sure they'll be great as well.

I cannot wait until 2012!

lol itsounded weird. I just cant wait for 2012! Its like the day before it comes out the world ends.
I take Tolkien's work very seriously; don't even THINK about spamming this thread with one sentence, off-topic posts, Creater521.

I am super excited about this as well and 2012 can't get here fast enough. It seemed for the longest time that this project was cursed and was never going to get green-lit, so this is finally some news worth getting pumped about.

I am also very glad that Peter Jackson is fully running the project now. I feel like most LOTR and Tolkien fans thought that del Toro and Jackson would put out a good product together but deep down the truth is Peter Jackson is the only guy who will give us the best and most true to the original writings adaptation.

A good deal of the primary cast is back too; Ian McKellen, Hugo Weaving, and of course Andy Serkis. Martin Freeman also appears to be an excellent choice to carry Ian Holm's torch as Bilbo Baggins.

The only information that I have not heard about is if they are going back to the original concept of Two films; One that adapts 'The Hobbit' and One that bridges the gap between the 'Hobbit' events and the 'LOTR events...OR....are they still going to just split 'The Hobbit' into two films? I like the former idea better...the latter seems like "Sort of stretched, like... butter scraped over too much bread." B-)

I've been following the "progress" (if you could call it progress) for ages, so the fact that it's finally gone into production and cast members have been revealed and PJ is in charge and... -faints-

I'm still wondering about the second film as well; I know there was talk about using the second film to flesh out the first film (which would have covered the entire story), showing background stuff, like Gandalf and the White Council driving the Necromancer out of Dol Goldur and stuff. Then they wanted to split the book into 2 films, ending the first film over half way through the book. THEN there was talk about using the second film to bridge The Hobbit and The Lord of the Rings, using "original" content (I think they only have the rights to use LotR/Hobbit, and have to use their own original (fake) content (i.e., characters, events, etc.,...) when it comes to stuff that deviates from what is covered in The Hobbit/LotR; that blows the idea of a Silmarillion film out of the water, unless Christopher Tolkien sells the rights to it as well (doubtful)... which would be epic and confusing, and if The Lord of the Rings were supposedly impossible to film (before PJ filmed them), then I don't wanna know what people would say about that xD

Can you tell I'm excited? Lmao.

I'ma keep TheOneRing.net open ALL THE FREAKING TIME.

SHUT UP THIS IS IMPORTANT

Joking. But seriously, keep it down.

A slew of new info has come out over the past couple of weeks concerning Jackson's adaptation of The Hobbit. Sir Ian McKellen -bows- is returning as Gandalf, and Elijah Wood will be reprising his role of Frodo Baggins in at least one of the films (most likely both, sort of in the form of bookends). It's also very likely that the great Sir Christopher Lee will be repsiring his role as Saruman (if his health is in good order at least). Cate Blanchett will also be returning as Galadriel.

All of this info is getting me all giddy and nerdy. It's really hard to believe that it'll have been 10 years in December since The Lord of the Rings: The Fellowship of the Ring was released in theaters. The films (and most definitely the books) have been a HUGE part of my life over the last decade, so I cannot WAIT until 2012 - if the world ends (harhar), and I don't get to see Part II, I will be vewy sad =(

Any other Tolkien fans here? Excited? Disappointed?

I will continue to update this thread even if no one repies xD

Hey I am extremely excited about The Hobbit... It is one of my favorite books, I prefer it over LotR. (Don't Hit Me) I was really excited when I first started to hear rumors of the Hobbit being made into a movie. Then things kept happening and I didn't think it would ever be made and I kind of stopped following it. (at least not for a very long time.) I really hope all goes well in production and they can finally bring The Hobbit to theaters.

I have one question though. Are they making it in 3D? If they do I hope they make it good and not like the 3D in Clash of the Titans.

I've always wondered how LoTR book fans judge the films, because I enjoy them but have never read the books through. This is because I am a huge Harry Potter fan (books) and I literally cannot stand to watch the films some times. They are literally nothing compared to the books. They just leave too much out in films and its all based on visual thrills rather than deep character development. I know in LoTR they miss out Tom Bumbadil, is their much more?

With Tolkien fans it really depends on their exposure to the series. Myself, I discovered the books through the films, so I actually like the films. Fans who read the books before the films tend to dislike the films because of one reason or another. I understand that certain aspects of a book have to be changed or removed for the sake of making a film that will appeal to a wide audience, and not just the hardcore fans.

The same can be said for the Harry Potter books/films. I love the books tremendously, and I see the films as simple adaptations. The real fans will know what's missing or what has been changed, and we can lord it over the movie-only fans xD

I have always wanted a hobbit movie adaption and i am wondering what version of the gollum scene will they use because in the two versions of Tolkeins work differ slightly , he changed the first version to benifet gollums charchter when he was writing lord of the rings.

As on the movie adaptions , although missing a lot from the novels(which i read and loved) , a few friends have read the novel after watching the simple movie version which generally in my opinion gets a whole new fanbase for the series

Creater seems to spam a lot of threads which are due more than a one lined answer.

I read the Hobbit way back when I was in 6th grade and really enjoyed it. I'm looking forward to seeing the movie version of it, I just hope its mostly true to the story. I don't mind an odd thing here or there to be added in for the sake of it being a movie, but not total reworkings of a character to make them appeal to the general audience more, or other such nonsense.

Here is some info on a possible Blu-ray release of the Extended Editions of The Lord of the Rings trilogy! I've been waiting for the Extended Editions to hit Blu-ray, but now they've piqued my interest in the so-called Ultimate Box Set! I'd still buy 'em both xD

Im holding the thought of a ultimate box set of lord of the rings and the hobbit on blu-ray which is kinda the reason i dont want to upgrade my extended editions of the dvd to blu-ray(If rumour is true), but since im a sucker for money i will end up buying it asap

At kingjames i am a big fan of tolkiens work and in my honest opnion the
film adaptions of the lord of the rings were actually half decent so i have quite high hopes of another adapation of one of his works the hobbit

I've just been waiting for the extended blu ray edition to come out, certainly wasn't going to buy the normal edition when this was going to come out.

Martin Freeman is definitely an excellent choice as Bilbo, but not sure how they will get Christopher Lee in it as far as I know he isn't able to fly anymore due to his health.

2-5 times? I've watched them at least 30+ times. Each B)

Anyways, it's been awhile since I posted any updates here.

Filming starts in less than 2 weeks in New Zealand!

Also of epic note, they just announced the Extended Edition Blu-Ray release of the Lord of the Rings trilogy! All in all, there's apparently about 26 hours worth of special features (not including the films). It's available for pre-order on Amazon as of today. March just gets harder and harder! Pokemon, 3DS, and now a pre-order! The life of a nerd xD

It's a shame the blue ray collection out now has horrible ratings on amazon for the simple fact that it did not include the directors cut and extras. If there happens to be someone, somewhere, who was living under a rock and was interested in the movies and saw those reviews, they don't reflect the movies at all. Glad to hear this edition will be around soon, but 3ds has gotta come first for me.

Well, i have watched the first part around 3-4 times if i remember correctly. Part 2 and 3 probably around the 7-8 times each, mainly due to the epic battles, even if i haven't watched them for almost 3 years. :)

I'm definitely pre-ordering it when I get paid!

I always loved Smaug for some reason; he was integral to the plot, but is only featured in small bits towards the end. Richard Boone's performance in the 1977 animated version of The Hobbit was excellent; he just sounded so... badass. Especially his little speach about his armor and claws and stuff.

Then there's Gandalf: he's really mysterious in the book, with all of his comings and goings.

Honestly, I love all of the characters, even Bombur xD

I'm always checking out TheOneRing.net for updates, especially since I've been so busy as of late. It's a fantastic site. I still haven't gotten around to preordering the new Extended Editions, but I probably will this Thursday.

Thanks for posting that! Really neat stuff!

They just announced the titles for the films! Yep, no "Part I"/"Part II" stuff here.

The official titles are "The Hobbit: An Unexpected Journey" for part one, and "The Hobbit: There and Back Again" for part two!

Also announced was that Orlando Bloom will be reprising his role as Legolas for the films (hopefully just a cameo while the dwarves are in Mirkwood). I know it's not a huge thing, but I like that they're keeping the films interconnected with the Lord of the Rings films. Jackson also revealed that the White Council's attack on Dol Goldur will be featured in the film, which is very exciting in my opinion!

Here's the White Council in action!
