The Silver Lining is a Free to Play PC game made by Phoenix Online Studios and is the continuation of the Kings Quest series. Being a independent company Phoenix Online ran into many snags along the way in trying to get there game released. Vivendi Games, Inc. ordered a cease and desist on the game after 4 years of development because they were the license-holder of the Kings Quest series. A overwhelming response from fans sending in e-mails and letters to Vivendi plus the overall quality of the game convinced them to let the project continue. The Silver Lining was originally called King's Quest IX: Every Cloak Has A Silver Lining but was renamed as per there agreement with Vivendi Games, Inc. All the content and character names were allowed to remain the same only the Kings Quest name in the title was removed. In 2008 Vivendi Games, Inc. merged with Activision making them the license-holder of the Kings Quest series. Activision also ordered a cease and desist on the project until June 26, 2010 when Phoenix Online Studios announced that Activision decided to allow the game to be released.

The Silver Lining was originally going to be a trilogy but later was changed into one game using a Episode format with Episodes 1 and 2 containing what was going to be the original game in the trilogy.

Episodes 1 and 2 are available for FREE DOWNLOAD from Phoenix Online Studios

Episodes 3-5 will continue being released later 2010 and 2011.

Wow, how did i miss this thread? Im a big fan of point n click adventures but i never got around to any of the kings quest games though. Shoot me now haha. Last i heard on this was when they were told to cease all work on the project...i didnt realise it had been released.

I cant believe how good it looks though, and im so glad they were able to continue. Though i never got into the games i was furious that they were told to can the project.

If i get time(like that'll happen), im def gonna have to give it a bash.

Is it a beast to solve or were they a bit more leniant with this?

Its standard Sierra / Kings Quest style, but not as hard as KQV. Its well worth downloading if you like old PC adventure games.

Sierra (When Ken and Roberta Williams owned it) is one of my all time favorite game creators and phoenix did a top notch job of being true to all the characters and story plot of the KQ games.

It was the difficulty factor that put me off, i was told by some of my friends that it was pretty unforgiving so havent taken the plunge and attempted one.

Speaking of roberta, it wasnt that long ago i played through Phantasmagoria. Though it hasnt aged well at all, with all the FMV and bad acting, it definetly still has an atmosphere about it.

Pity the 2nd installment feels like utter garbage. I started it last week after buying it on GOG.com...cant say im feeling it to be honest.

I played the first Phantasmagoria game back in the day and I liked it but just not as much as the older style point and click games. Gabriel Knight 2 and 3 wasn't as good as part one just because of the FMV video style of those games.

The KQ games can be hard and unforgiving but I don't think there any worse than Lucas or WestWood adventure games.

Episode IV is out!

If you haven't checked out The Silver Lining yet then I strongly urge you to do yourself a favor and start downloading it now because I cant recommend it enough!

Phoenix Online Studios has also teamed up with Jane Jensen (Gabriel Knight, Kings Quest VI, Grey Matter) and her husband Robert Homes to make a new game called Cognition so be sure to check that out!
