I have discovered the HCG and I am in awe from this show. It's so great what you guys are doing and you really are making a name for yourselves with the Podcast. You are truly aspiring. But you have made me want to start game collecting, and I don't know if that is a good idea. Here's the situation: I'm not into game collecting. I can be considered a casual gamer. I follow the game scene but I'm not into it. I do enjoy collecting video game paraphernalia but not a real fan of nick-nacks. So overall, I'm not a big enough video game collector. But on thing that I go crazy for are crossover games. I really mean crazy. I love crossover games more than any other video game. While some games I could give or take, if I hear about a crossover game, I'll want it the minute the announce it. I can't explain why but I love them so much that no matter how bad it looks like, I'll want it for the crossover value. And recently, I've been starting to collect them at a small pace. I'm currently making a list of crossover games that have been made and are being made and I got 143 as of now, and I haven't included most well known ones. After discovering HCG, I have been tempted to start collecting crossover games and anything associated with them. I started by buying an import of Tatsunoko vs. Capcom, though at the time there was no indication of any localization of it until like a year later but am going to buy the english version as well since it's different from the japanese version. I also currently bought a copy of Famicom Jump II's strategy guide from eBay that's on it's way. If you don't know, Famicom Jump is a crossover game from the early 90's from Shonen Jump and the game mentioned is the sequel. I also checked on eBay and saw that there are selling a Segaga complete boxset that included all the stuff you have on the review you made and am thinking of buying it, though it's $199. I don't know if that is a good deal or not but I'm such a huge fan of crossover games, I would pay it and be satisfied all because I love crossover games. But overall, I don't know if I'm in a position to start a game collection. I'm currently living with my family in a tight apartment and I don't know if I should start collecting just like you guys are. I mean, in order to start collecting, I'm going to have to invest in video game systems to play these games and I have a minimum wage job so that may not be a good idea. I'm planning on going to school to learn computer programming and work in that because that's my main interest so my focus should be on that. Also, I gotta get myself a car because I don't have one. I keep telling myself this but I'm so tempted to start buying crossover games because I just love them so much that I want to collect everything I can get. I'm starting on a small scale, buying small things that I can just put away somewhere so one day I'll be able to actually display them when I'm full and ready to live on my own place. So can anyone help me about starting a collecting but on a small dose? Because I'm really tempted to just start collecting in big doses. |

It's important to remember that game collecting is not about getting as much as you can, as fast as you can, and trying to emulate the collections of others. That's how you go bankrupt. It's more about the pure enjoyment of gaming, what you like and building a solid collection of titles that you want over time - there is no ironclad requirements in terms of how many games you must own, what items you need to get, how much space you have to display it, etc. I consider myself a collector, even though I don't own a vast number of systems or games, but I have built a respectable collection that I quite enjoy. Memorabilia, plushies and other collectibles are not really my thing. For what it's worth, my advice is to collect what you want and enjoy your hobby to the extent your circumstances allow. It's hard to watch the big collectors like Pete and HCG and not want what they have, but collecting is not an exact science and you don't need loads of games and other items to make yourself a better collector. Start small - that's what we all do. |

Budget and space considerations are top priority. Buy within your means, whether that means not spending more than you can afford or not buying more stuff than you can safely store in your house. That being said, you can start small and gradually work your way up when more money and space becomes available. It's a good start that you've already found something that you're really passionate about and that it's specialized enough that there won't be as much competition for these items. A million people collect NES games. Collecting crossover games is something unique and cool. |

It really doesn't sound like your into gaming enough to even suggest starting a game collection. You have to have a passion in whatever you do. |

Have a passion or some nostalgia or just collect PSX or Atari 2600 games. Those are probably the cheapest and most common games on the market. Some could say that the Atari 2600 games are too primitive now and that a lot of the PSX games don't hold up anymore, both parties can be wrong. There are many fun 2600 games if you just love fun, good gameplay and well the PSX I mentioned just because it is inexpensive and has a large library. Some games were on the early polygon side of things....but that can't stop ya from playing every game. |

I believe I did the same thing when I started collecting, I just bought a lot of everything. After a point I was spending more than I was making per day and it started to catch up with me, to the point where I had to sell off all the stuff I had bought. The point is, even if you want to collect in big doses, it just won't pay off at all in the long run as you'll have to get rid of most of it when your bills catch up to you. Buy things that you want, but only buy a little at a time. Budget yourself and make it reasonable and above all else, make sure you enjoy everything that you buy. |

Thanks for the advice guys. I will keep control of my spending so I won't end up crashing down. But there's another problem I'm running into and that's eBay, because when I search for a particular game, I see something associated with that game, like a limited edition boxset, and I get tempted to buy it because I feel like I'll never see it again and it's my only chance. Any advice on how to deal with that? Because it's one of the major problems I'm running into. |

Ebay can be very tempting when you see really nice things on there and it's really easy to jump the gun into just buying something. You can always check "completed listings" on ebay which will show you how often something sells over a 2 week period. That can help you decide if something is extremely limited or if something is just pretty and common. Honestly though, the best advice is that it will always come around again. You'll always find it again on ebay eventually unless its a one of a kind item (i.e. Pete's Signed Sonic Glass)

Well I checked out the "completed listings" option and it only showed 1 sold item. Does that means it rare or that it eventually gets sold every now and again around 2 weeks? |

Everything gets sold every now and again. Use the completed listings as a guide if you are curious but realize that someone will list it again, eventually. There's never a rush to collect as there's always going to be someone willing to sell. |

Seems like you have some interest in collecting but need to really discover if it's what you really want to do. It might be best to look into some games really in depth if you think you might like them and try and get opinions on those games. Ebay is a tempting place but it's become a shell of it's former self. So many sellers have become far too greedy and only used the "buy it now" options now. I think you are better off trying to find trades with people from sites like this, going to garage sales or flea markets or shopping at old gaming stores. Looking into what you want extensively before purchasing. |

@sdcpro: That's a load of my mind. Thanks. I've been racking my brain on this dilemma. @sushi_b: I think you are better off trying to find trades with people from sites like this, going to garage sales or flea markets or shopping at old gaming stores. About that. Everyone mentions that but I always pass on that because there are no places like that where I live. Also, I don't know what they look like either. Garage sales are pretty rare and there isn't a single retro gaming store around my area. Unless of course you mean to go out and search for these places because I live in Los Angeles and a big city like this must have them somewhere. Because the way everyone keeps saying them, I keep thinking they're in every corner or something. Edited by TKGB, Oct 28 2010, 04:40 PM.

Hello TKGB, I myself am interested in beginning to collect video games and I am glad you opened the topic for discussion. I understand completely the situation about garage sales. It seems a barren wastleland but the way these guys go on about them its like there on every day. Collecting in Ireland is a pain in the behind.Number 1,we don't have an interest in retro(not that much) and we dont have special shops or grandfathers around the street with consoles. My friend however has 50+ genesis games so I borrow them from time to time. I like the bay, its the one way for me to purchase retro games. But America may be different Edited by Blackhebrew2, Oct 28 2010, 05:03 PM.

Seriously? You live in LA? There has to be shops that cater to old games. I find that very hard to believe that one of the largest city's in the United States doesn't have garage sales and game stores with previous game consoles (games). I think you must be looking in the wrong places, they aren't going to be on every corner but there has to be some. Now it's too cold for garage sales, but there must be some sort of flea markets to find and stores as well. Check out your directory online and suburbs as well. I'm sure you will find that there are more then you first thought out to be. Edited by sushi_b, Oct 28 2010, 06:54 PM.
