Well I guess it was bound to happen sooner or later. So now I need to figure out what do do next. The console was refurbished by someone other than Microsoft so I know they wont fix it....so.... Do I try to fix it myself with the 'penny trick'? or Do I just spend another $299 on the new 'slim'? One more question for those of you who have the newest model: Does the Hardrive for the older models fit with the new 'slim'? If it doesn't how will I transfer all my game data over? Jeez this sucks....sigh. |

No Xbox 360 fix will legitly fix it. You can take it to a professional and have them professionally reflow it, usually cost around $50. If you do, make sure they are using an IR board or professional reflow board. People that use the heat gun aren't professionals and you'd be wasting your money. That will make it last around another 6 months, maybe much longer depending on how much you play it. However, I would just go out and get a slim or buy a used 360 with a good microsoft warranty sticker. If it's already been refurbished once, it's already near the end of it's lifespan. I'm not entirely sure how transferring hard drive data works so hopefully someone else can post and tell us

I'm very sorry to hear that. I constantly play my Xbox 360 and I always feel like I'm playing on borrowed time and the RROD will eventually catch up to me. I know it's not the best option financially, but I recommend going out and buying the Xbox 360 slim. Older models will still get the RROD, and the "penny trick" is unreliable and a band-aid solution at best. From what I've heard, the Slim is more reliable and is less likely to suffer from the same problems that the old models did. On the plus side, the holidays are just around the corner and there will be a good Xbox 360 holiday bundle this year. I believe the 250 GB slim comes with Forza 3 and Alan Wake packed in, but don't quote me on that. I just read this today on one of the gaming websites I frequent. |

I'm no stranger to the RROD as I'm on my 4th XBOX, but still sorry to hear that the inevitable happened to yours. To my knowledge the old hard drive will not fit in to your new slim XBOX 360. I believe you will need to transfer the data using the "Xbox 360 Hard Drive Transfer Kit" which costs around £15/$25. http://www.xbox.com/en-US/Live/Transfer I think you can also use a USB drive to transfer data, however MS have a capped limit on the size of the dive that can be used to 16GB. This is the cheapest way, but for this method you will also need to borrow another working (FAT/OLD) XBOX 360 to plug your HDD in to get the data off. If you are transferring a full 250GB of data expect to expect to make about 30 trips to and from the XBOXs. Hope that helps. Edited by bediger, Nov 4 2010, 08:40 AM.

Thanks for the help guys. I think I am going to just buy the new 'slim' when I can scrape up the money. You are right about the Holiday bundle Browland so I will grab that probably. I looked and it comes out this Friday according to a few sites and Amazon already has it listed. Thanks for that link and info Bediger...that is exactly what I will need to transfer the data. Maybe I can recoup some money by selling my old 'fat' 360 120GB Hard drive...we will see. |

Why did your friend "Refurbish" it? and is it obvious that it has been tampered with? |
