Ok, so I finally was able to get my hands on a sega saturn after all these years. Being a big fan of arcade games like shmups (yay shmups), fighters, beat em ups, I couldn't wait to get my hands on some japanese goodness. So the Saturn I bought (off craigslist) came with a memory card plus, which apparently lets me play foreign games. I have x-men: children of the atom, and dragonball z both working on it. So i decided to pick up some more games from the flea market. So, I bought both king of fighters 95 and 96. 95 did come with the cart, and its outer box, and I got both for $15 total. I was pretty stoked Come to find out, these games won't work without the cart, and I cannot switch them mid-game. I knew 95 might not work, but apparently they both require the cart. .. So, all that unnecessary writing was pretty much just to ask one question. Will the action replay 4-in-1 allow me to play these games, or do I have to get the 5-in-1. The price difference is obscene, and a jap system would be much cheaper than the 5-in-1, but I don't wanna have to switch around systems. And, If anyone wants to suggest some games for the saturn-newbie, feel free. Thanks for any help! |

The action replay cart should be no problem to get the game running. You might have the old 4 in 1 cart that I had a long time ago but I can't remember the name of it which has everything but the 4 Meg expansion pack in it. Does KOF 95 really need that though? I thought that was more for games released some time around 1997 or later on the Saturn. Maybe I am wrong about that as I don't have KOF 95 in particular but there is a fairly good chance that the Action Replay will work out ok. Check out the one available over at Playasia. That one seems to be a perfect cart for what you need. Edited by sushi_b, Nov 5 2010, 12:21 AM.

K.O.F. 95 Will only work on a Japanese Saturn (unless its a modded Saturn) because it requires a "ROM cartridge" that came packed with the game to function. Since you have to use the "ROM cartridge" you cannot use a Action replay to bypass the region code in the game. A "ROM cartridge" is totally different form the 1 Meg and 4 Meg ram carts most fighters use. A Rom Cart contains data that the game needs to function as well as additional ram for the system. K.O.F. 95 is the only game in the series that uses a special ROM Cart, K.O.F. 96, and 97 us the normal 1meg Ram card. K.O.F. 96 should work on your system with a Action Replay Plus Cart, if its not loading make sure the cartridge slot on your console is clean so its reading the action replay like it should. Check out this thread for more info on Ram / Mem carts........ http://petesgameroomforum.com/topic/2041627/ And for Game Recommendations check out the Saturn A Closer Look thread......... http://petesgameroomforum.com/topic/2149347/ Edited by majinpowers, Nov 5 2010, 01:21 AM.

That's pretty interesting. I hadn't heard of games getting specific pack in carts for play. Is it really worth it in particular for a game like KOF 95? Was there any other popular games that needed special carts just to play them? |

well darn. I may have screwed myself. So I went back to the flea market, and just bought a japanese saturn. So now my K.O.F. 95 works, which is cool, since from what you guys said, this is the only way to play it. However, I had assumed that kof 96 would work off of 95's cart, and it won't So, in order to get the 4mg upgrade thing, I still have to spend the $25 on a cart? doesnt that only affect sf zero3 and x-men vs sf? on a side note, this Kof 95 plays like a dream. Its smoother than playing dream match on the dc or ps2. So, I suppose worth it, since I traded a final fantasy tactics and $10 for the jap console. Also, off topic, my jap saturn is black like the us one, and is identical aside where they were made. The jap one is made in japan, and the us one is made in korea. Is it possible i just got a modded us console? Is there a good way to tell the difference? Edited by dunpeal2064, Nov 8 2010, 02:53 PM.

I don't know about the console thingy, but majin should know. But have you tried any other Saturn games? I was looking to buy one and I just didn't because I didn't want to go take a few months and lots of money to hunt down good games. |

A Japanese Sega Saturn will have a different bios and the system sub screens should be in Japanese. Also the Saturn logo will look different from the North American versions. K.O.F. 96 don't use the Rom cart that came with K.O.F. 95 but rather uses the 1 Meg SNK Cart. (A 4 Meg cart should work fine as well) |

ah ok, I youtube'd the startup screen, mine is definately american. It works for me though. I'm using a memory card plus (no clue why this lets me play foreign games, but it does) and that lets me play the us games. Thank you guys for all the help, I just couldn't find this info anywhere. I think instead of getting that cart for 96 I'll just try to get some more shmups. kof 95 should keep me busy for a bit |
