It's funny how many people, mainly non-gamers, assume that only kids play video games these days. I often have people asking me "aren't you a little old to be playing games?". Well, no I'm not and I have data to back me up. Yes, I am 30 years old and that might seem to be over the hill to some who think that mainly people under 18 play video games, but research by the Entertainment Software Association (ESA) suggests that I'm actually around the right age for it. According to the ESA's research, the average gamer age in the United States is 34 years old and they have been playing for an average of 12 years (source: http://www.theesa.com/facts/index.asp). This actually makes perfect sense because the popularity of home consoles exploded in the late 80's and people like me have been playing since that time. The other likely reason is that most high profile games these days are rated "M" and are geared at an adult audience. The 5 to 10 year olds who were playing the NES back in the day are now the 30 to 35 year olds who want something a little edgier. People like me have been playing since before the younger gamers of today were born, and many of us have the income to afford more than one console and thus we buy more games. The idea that video games are "baby's toys" is nothing more than an outdated stereotypical fallacy that non-gamers believe in simply because they have no knowledge of gaming and what it's really about. The next time someone looks down at your gaming hobby as being immature or pointless, hit them up with these home truths. Gaming is not just the leisurely pleasure of children anymore and games have evolved to the point where they appeal to a growing adult audience. Knowing me, I'll be playing video games until I'm a senile old man! |

'Here here' Ben and bravo (stands and applauds). I will be playing Ikaruga, Super Street Fighter XV, and Final Fantasy XXVII when I'm 64 years old brother!! Even my non gaming friends smirk and shake their head in disbelief at my ongoing interest in video games not to mention my acquaintances who look at me like I'm complete nuts. They just don't get it man. It is an interest/hobby that exists for all age groups to enjoy and is nothing to be ashamed of at all. I often question why some people feel the need to belittle others interests...maybe they should be a little introspective about that. Excellent post dude. |

As far as I'm concerned, I'll be gaming my whole life! I wouldn't wanna miss out on Super Mario Galaxy 15! lol ![]() Thankfully, most everyone I know supports my gaming and no one really thinks I'm an idiot for it. Granted, I am under 18, but some people may think gaming to the extent I do is weird. |

It's kind of funny to think that I plan to be playing games until the day I die...but my children and grandchildren are going to freaking love me. |

LOL - that's definitely an advantage we have over the previous generation. We grew up playing video games, so our children will think we're the coolest parents around because we understand gaming and we can share that with our kids. Personally, it doesn't bother me that the stereotype of the average gamer is a) a child, or b) a person with no life. Some people do embody this, but the majority of gamers I know (both in real life and on here) are awesome people who have more to their personality than a love of video games. My significant other doesn't play video games herself, outside of occasionally stealing my DS to play Clubhouse Games, but she tolerates my enjoyment of them and she doesn't judge. Actually, she rather enjoys the Burnout games, so that's a step in the right direction However, others in my life either view games as a waste of time or something I should have grown out of long ago. I've accepted the fact that they'll never understand and that's fine with me; it's not like we don't have other commonalities. |

I think that people will start to see gaming as a more serious form of media when theatres, television, and everything else fails, but games, being recession-proof, are still around. Just give it time, haha. |

The stereotype is quickly leaving. Nowadays it's more like "WUT YOU PLAY GAMES THAT AREN'T A FPS!! YOU HAVE A PS3?? WHAT A NOOB!" I'll be gaming 'till the day I die. *represent* |

I don't notice this stigma as much anymore. It doesn't even really bother me when you actually consider a lot of the games being made now are certainly not for children. The one I despise is the caveman mindset that all gamers are just people who live in their mother's basement, sitting in the dark, never exercise, or have any form of social life. Some female DJ on the radio the other morning said something about a game she heard about and was like, "Yeah, you'll end up living down in your mother's basement drinking Red Bulls all the time," and was completely serious. I would have face palmed if I wasn't driving.

I havent really noticed being looked down upon by non gamers, though i dont really talk to that much non-gamers. Even my missus gets in on bomberman, puzzle bobble n loves some of the visual styles of games like limbo etc. What i've noticed more is that my friends dont see the point in playing older games. it's almost like they are afraid that they are gonna miss out on something new if they do. I keep telling them the new game will still be there in a couple of weeks time, and yes, there will prob be another game out that you wanna play by then but damn, try something different. These are usually the people saying there are no good games out. I personally dont have enough time to play everything i want, and thats just the older games. good topic by the way... |

I'm 30 too. Wouldn't worry what others think of your video game habits. If someone judges you negatively for it, they're probably just a narrow-minded person anyway, so I wouldn't give them the time of day. But now that I think about it, when I was 18 years old 12 years ago, my then-girlfriend's mother thought I was crazy because I wanted to play their SNES that they finally took back out of the box after being put up the day after Christmas so many years other. She got an SNES for Christmas one year, and was through with it forever the day after. I didn't know what in the hell could've possibly make her mother think that way. Ddin't make me feel bad about myself. Just made me annoyed at her for her stupidity. I hate people like that. Anyways, people older than me at work or near my age like video games, not that should matter anyway, but the 30+ crowd definitely loves their games. I wouldn't worry about it too much. And if someone says anything bad about it, I'd think of it as a negative against them rather than yourself. Well, have fun. |

Oh, I get this problem all the time. "Really!? You're fourteen? You're way too old to be playing video games!" Naw, I'm just kidding. I obviously haven't really experienced this stereotype myself yet, but I can see how it would be annoying. People may not think I'm too old to play video games in general, but I get that vibe from people that they think I'm too old to play things like Pokemon or Animal Crossing. Well, if I'm considered a little kid for playing those games, so be it. While a lot of people in my school don't even know I play these games (or that much games in general), it gets annoying hearing people call Pokemon "gay" (which I've brought up in a topic before) or things like that. Anyway, the stereotype on topic seems to be growing dimmer, but a newer stereotype I see is that any games that aren't FPS's, don't have HD graphics, are on the Wii, are considered games for little kids, or stupid games. This is mostly the case in grade school and early high school, but you get what I mean. |

I hate the stigma that you have to be a kid to play video games. And pokemonzrpg I'm sure as a fellow pokemon fan you've gotten a lot of crap from people saying it's a childrens game. But it does seem however that nowadays' people are much more tolerant of this subject, almost everybody in my high school plays video games to a certain degree. It's funny however that some people do think games are only for kids when we have games like Heavy Rain, Red Dead Redemption, and Mass effect. Edited by Shaq Attack, Nov 25 2010, 01:38 PM.

people dont understand that gaming can be a hobby too. i get people at working all the time telling me that playing is a waste of time, pointless and a waste of money and how i should be watching hockey or football or fixing cars. the funny thing is that everyone of those pricks are drunks and waste more cash on 2-4s daily than i do on games monthly. |

Good point. If people hassle you about the money spent on video games, just point out that their booze costs more in the long run and they don't even have anything to show for it...except perhaps a beer belly. |

Nice. haha. Yeah, people saying its a waste of time, in my experience anyway, are peoplr that sit n watch tv or dvds endlessly in thier spare time. I like a good movie, but i'd rather crank through video games than sit through these "1hr x 24 episodes" programs that i see churned every week. My friends inform me that most are very witty, intelligent and i should really get round to watch them. I personally think the "intelligent" choice would be to spend that 24hrs completing games, inluding multiplayer games, that me AND my friends can enjoy together. Beats just sitting infront of the telly just watching if you ask me. |

Yeah, I don't see how watching hockey, football, tv shows, or movies is any less waste of time than video games. Got to pay for cable to watch those shows. Got to have Netflix, Internet, or pay for those movies some how, way more expensive even if you do it at theatres. Those people have no place telling you video games are any less waste of money or time than movies, shows, etc. |

I get this sometimes, I am 32! From guys I use to game with when I was a kid, they are more jealous than anything because they have a family(I have no kids) and they wish they could spend more time and money in video games. Everybody have their own priorities and we should be respectful of others hobbies.
