First of all I apologize if there's already a topic like this on the boards already. I just wanted to get this off my chest as quick as possible. After hearing that this was on XBLA, and then seeing the ABYSMAL scores it's gotten. I've gotta say... ....WHAT.THE.HELL?! Now first of all let me say that I'm not really a Sonic fan at all. I've tried going through the 2D games and they were never my style, I played Secret Rings a bit when I owned a Wii...but the controls drove me nuts. I was never a huge, huge Sega fan...it was really all about Nintendo for me as a kid. Didn't even own a Dreamcast (something I'm starting to regret as more and more Dreamcast games get ported to other consoles). So it goes without saying that I never played Sonic Adventure when it first came out. So to summarize so far: I have NO Sonic bias, NO nostalgia tied up in this game or franchise. I was listening to Episode 8 of the podcast when Pete and the gang mentioned the game, it's horrid reviews, and their feelings of bias against Sonic from the reviewing community. Now I know Pete is a MEGA Sonic fan. I'm just getting ready to view some of his collection on his other channel (love the passion). So I figured I'd give this game a shot and downloaded the trial. I've always heard very good things. Well...THIS GAME IS FREAKING AWESOME!!!! I've only played the trial level (three times in a row I might add) and I seriously have to shake my head at these reviews. What are these guys smoking??? This game, from the bite sized sample I've had, easily stands on it's own along with games like Mario 64, Banjo Kazooie, Crash Bandicoot, and other 3D platformers. I'm not saying it's better; I'm just saying it has in no way aged any worse than those games have. I fully plan to buy this (800 points is a great deal) when my money is no longer tied up in eBay auctions. I played the demo level three times in a row, trying to finish faster, get more rings, get a better score. I really see the connection between Sonic and Sega's own arcade roots with the sense of speed and relatively simple gameplay. So if someone like myself, who has no love for Sonic, no nostalgia towards Sega or Sonic can feel this game is still fully enjoyable...well, I can say with a lot of confidence that yes...people really do just bash Sonic because it's cool. What a shame...I've always really liked the character even though the games weren't my cup of tea. In fact...I'm downloading the Sonic 4 demo right now, and am looking into gathering up the Sonic Collection released last generation to give the games another shot. It seems maybe my tastes are changing. Sorry for the rant, but I felt it might make for a good discussion. Really regretting missing out on this back in the day. |

This game is amazing and a classic. Reviewers usually bash it just because it is a Sonic game... I think Colors is now the best 3D Sonic game, but Adventure 1 takes a very, very, very close second.
