i was at gamestop today and this mother and i guess her 13 year old boy walked in and the mother was yelling at the store clerk for selling her this game for her boy. she said it was ''extreamly graphic and sexual'' the game? grand theft auto 4, she couldint tell by the box or the big M symbole on the box that the game was graphic, in my opinion, that parrent was an idiot, they have a guy holding a gun, a women licking a loloy pop, how did you NOT see that this game was graphic? so i gave the mother a suggestion to get sonic colors, then she said and i quote ''how do i know that game isnt graphic?!'' so what do you think, i blame the parrent, but do you? no hate or flame. |

She's a retard. I'm sorry, but a 4-year-old could tell the difference! I feel sorry for you and the employee. Sonic Colors was a great recommendation from you, though!

the parent is a bit stupid for not even knowing about the warnings that are clearly marked on the box. but i think why this happens so often is because games are easy to plame, parents usually know nothing of them and they might seem very terrible to parents, so they usually plame the games, but really the one to plame is the parent for not knowing about the warnings. i think its the parents responsibility to find out about the age ratings and content warnings of games so that they may decide if a game like gta 4 is something they want to give their kids. Some parents look for an easy explanation to excuse bad behavior in their kids because they are in denial over their children's culpability, and they don't want to admit that they are part of the cause so they point the finger away from themselves. There's no question that media is a guiding influence, so movies, games and music all play a part in how we're raised, so it's up to the parents to make informed decisions. Recently, I was reading through some posts on the Amazon.com discussion board for Call of Duty: Black Ops, and there were a few parents who seemed totally clueless on the game's content. I read many posts saying "I bought this for my 12 year old and he loves it" and "Should I buy this for my 10 year old stepson?". My response to these people was the same - It's rated "M" for a reason and it's clear that these games aren't intended for younger gamers. However, some parents do take responsibility and hold these games back from their kids. In one post, titled "My parent's suck", a 12 year old gamers was lamenting about how his parents won't buy him Black Ops despite the fact that all of his friends have it. I responded by saying that his parents are smart, unlike those of his friends. My attitude is that you are responsible because you put the games into their hands, so you have no right to bitch if they start acting badly because of it. If I was a parent and my kid was acting like some of the people I've encountered online, I would confiscate his game consoles and make him do chores instead. I listen to 13 year olds swearing and acting like idiots online and I wonder why the parents are allowing them to act like this. |

well if the parent cannot read the box and notice the rating of the game it is there fault that they bought it for there kid parents should not be blameing video games they should be blameing them selfs as it is there mistake that they bought the game and let there kid play the game which has content not for children the parents should take more resonsiblity for what game is being purchased |

Parents should also take responsibility and not spoil their kids. I have read through some fanboy posts on other sites and it's become clear that many kids today have no appreciation for the good things they have. Their parents will buy them a game, and they will whine about the graphics being below standard, the gameplay being unevolved and other crap like that. They're lucky to have game consoles - many kids go without food, clean water, schooling and heat! One post was from a 14 year old who said "my mom is suck a f*cking idiot, I wanted the Xbox 360 version and she got me the Wii version instead". Seriously, if I was a parent and my kid acted like that, his game consoles would be taken away and he'd be doing endless chores until he learns some respect. |

At the same time, if you include me in that age group, I like to believe that some of us are responsible enough to play games like that, thought it seems I continue to find more and more younger/stupider people online and on Xbox Live every day, which can tarnish my name. I find this unfair only because these kinds of people represent "our age group" improperly and make parents (my mom partially included) think of me more as a child than as a young adult which, again, I believe is unjust. |

@pokemonzrpg There is a certain injustice to it, since many underage gamers are responsible and intelligent, but sadly, many are not and this ruins it for the entire age group. I used to think the same thing about R-rated movies, since I was (and still am) a movie nerd and I felt I was more than capable of handling whatever content was in the movie. Sadly, the law has to take an "all or nothing" approach to deciding how ratings are enforced, so sadly it's the less mature people in your demographic who are to blame. Obviously there are variables; plenty of people over 18 are less mature than some 14 year olds that I've dealt with. Perhaps my image of underage gamers has been tarnished by all the a-holes I've dealt with on Xbox live, but you're right, you are mature enough despite the age gap, so hopefully your parents will come around. |

Well, it's not that she won't let me play M rated games. She actually does for the most part. It's just that it annoys me how she still sees me as a child and there are still some movies she thinks I'll have nightmares just watching. |

Well the real question is how did he buy the game? GameStop is suspossed to inforce the M rated games with an ID. So either one guy there didn't or the mom/dad bought the game for him and then came back asking why they would let their son buy it. |

I can play most M-Rated games at other people's places, but I can't own very many just because my parents don't want them around, which I understand. Like for language, I'm a Christian and dislike bad language. Do I dislike people that use it? No. I have friends at school that do. Once I'm out of the house, I will be owning some more M-Rated games. Because I was in a public Christian school, I was literally frightened by bad language, but after being at a public school for almost 2 years and on the internet, it doesn't phase me. It's actually quite the relief. My parents were always scared that me hearing bad language would make me use it, but I haven't been effected and I don't think I ever will. I'll never use curse words.

My parents were a little more liberal when it came to me watching adult movies, since I was into horror and they indulged me by renting Friday the 13th, Nightmare on Elm Street, Halloween, etc. I think they knew I was responsible enough not to take it seriously, but they also had the caveat "If you get nightmares, it's your own fault" which helped me make some of my own decisions. Adult video games was not much of a problem since not many existed, at least in a form I could obtain, until the Playstation came out and even then the "M" rating wasn't enforced by retailers. I was also 15 at the time, so my parents were much less concerned about what I was watching or playing. The landscape of gaming is totally different today and it's hard for parents to make informed decisions, especially when peer pressure makes kids want the M-rated games even more. I think the parents just need to be responsible and watch what their kids are doing, watch if their attitude or behavior changes and take away the games if they are proving to be a detriment. |

My parents don't really care about the M rating of games. They know I'm mature enough to understand that its just a game. They check the rating but almost half of my very small ps3 collection is M. Here's my list of M games that I own Bad company 2 Fallout 3 Resistance 2 Rainbow 6 vegas and rainbow 6 vegas 2. so it really just depends on the parents. and wether or not they let their children play.So in a way i do belive that the parent is to blame for that. |

My parents were both into video games. My Dad used to design games on his own (he never worked for any company, but he designed games as a hobby.) My Mom used to play N64 with me everyday, and while she wasn't particularly into the game market, she worked in other electronics. She even worked for Sony (and how sad, here I am, a mother working for Sony, while I'm playing on my 360, lol.) I agree with browland1. Parents need to stop spoiling their kids. I worked hard to get my games. I got a few of my systems for Christmas, but I payed for a lot of my systems. I didn't want to be spoiled, I wanted to work hard and the systems be a reward. As for this parent in the situation, I guess she's one of those Mothers who just buys the game, and doesn't know about it. I'm not going to say anything negative towards the mother or child, but by the sound of this story, it seems like they're both at fault. Don't you think the boy could tell the difference between a rated E game and a rated M game. Maybe he should have known too. So, in a way, I guess they're both at fault. |

I have 3 rated M games: DOOM-SNES (Of course, in modern day, it would be more like a rated T at the worst, lol.) Halo 3-Xbox 360 CoD Black Ops-Xbox 360 Personally, blood and gore doesn't really scare me in games. If a game is rated M for blood and gore, then I don't really care. If a game is rated M for extreme sexual content, then that kinda bothers me personally. One of the reasons I don't play Grand Theft Auto. |

My parents decided that I can play M games as long as they don't have sexual stuff in it. I don't have any yet, though. That's more of a problem with not having the money, though. |

In most cases I think they should turn the focus inwards on their own parenting and stop using games as a scapegoat and a babysitter. That said, I don't believe that all games have no negative consequences on the mind. I gamed so much in my younger days and turned into a relatively level-headed person, however, I can't imagine playing a game like Modern Warfare as a child and I expect that it desensitizes you to the real life situations that it portrays. Don't get me wrong, I'm not about censorship, I just find the super-realistic-kill-you-in-first-person fad a bit puzzling and disturbing. My point here is not to bash these kinds of games, but it seems to be the focus when parents are "outraged".

What can I say? It's all the parents fault for buying the game. Gamestop clearly tells them what's involved and she should pay attention rather then getting mad at the wrong person. I'm 13 and my parents have no problem letting me play any M rated games because I'm responsible and not saying racist slurs on PSN. |

What boggles my mind is when a game says "grand theift Auto" a parent thinks its an ok game WTF. Also i had this happen when i worked at a walmart years ago, old lady was buying her grandson GTA san andreas, and she couldn't pronounce Andreas. Sadly things like this is the reason why so many politicians want to treat games like porn, i wish parents would step up and be responsible but thats asking too much I know. |
