I was watching a marathon of Hoarders today and it got me thinking, is video game collecting a form of hoarding? By the way I always thought I had a strong stomach but after seeing some of the houses on that show I was ready to lose my lunch. |

I think there is a clear difference between the hoarding and collecting. Hoarders, like the ones you see on TV, collect thing compulsively to the point where their ability to live, work and get around in their own house is compromised. They also hoard things that are worthless and often unsanitary; the woman with all the dead cats buried under the junk and who crapped in plastic bags and kept them comes to mind. Collecting serves a more functional purpose and I look at big collections, like Pete's for example, and I don't see the same hoarding tendencies. The games are nearly organized and shelved, and it's easy to navigate around the room and get to what you need. Some people might have the "same difference" attitude towards collecting and hoarding, but I see them as completely different things. Some might view large collections as extreme, but as long as the quality of life, health and safety isn't affected, I don't see a problem. |

Absolutely not. Video Game Collectors sell some of their games to make profit or to buy a more valuable item. They do not keep all of their doubles or broken games or systems. Hoarders keep everything, video game collectors do not. |

I guess it could be hoarding if you have trouble walking around your house because you keep bumping into systems and games; then it might be. But if it's all placed neatly in a rack, on a desk, shelf, and all of that, then nah, maybe not. |

i agree with this but i would like to also add that hoarders usually get multiple times the same item, game collectors usually dont own 50 copies of the same game. of course i might be making an idiot of me with this statment for my knowing of hoarders is limited. but ive seen some hoarders like some one collected his house full of food, like so much that you couldnt really move in the house anymore. |

Some collectors own multiple copies of a game or even the same system. For example, I remember watching some of Lukemore1's videos and noticing that he would buy a game system that he already had, even ones that I already owned multiples of. I didn't get his reasoning at first, but it made sense after learning that one of his hobbies is modding systems and repairing broken systems and selling them. Hoarding is defined by both the quantity of what a person accumulates and, like all addictions, the compulsive need to engage in this behaviour. I don't see game collectors in the same light, since they are collecting items that are clearly linked to their hobbies and passions and their quality of life doesn't suffer as a result. |

Note: The following is my opinion, and should be treated exactly as such. The following isn't any form of fact, and may be completely erroneous. I do not mean to offend anyone, apologies if this is the case. Thanks for starting this topic, it's something I've been thinking about for some time now, I've wanted to discuss it with like minded people, but not sure how it'd go down. The way I see it, there are two veins of collecting. Casual and Hardcore. Casual doesn't need touching on, as I feel it does exactly what it says on the tin. Hardcore on the other hand, can come in multiple flavours, and can alot of these flavours do border on hoarding (in my opinion). I honestly find myself in a bit of bother, I look in gamestores quite frequently, often popping into stores I've frequented earlier on in the week just to see if they have anything new and cheap on an offchance. Is this normal behaviour? I don't quite think so, but I've managed to rein it in, so the only has a negative effect on my wallet, and even then I try to ensure it has a minimal impact. However, this month I've found myself in the marginally in the red due to my compulsive purchasing, often purchasing games I have no intention of playing anytime soon, and absolutely no urge to sell on. Why? I have no idea. My compulsive purchasing behaviour pales in comparison to others in the community, who find themselves quite literally surrounded in the stuff they acquire. It's almost as if their posessions define who they are as a person. As a third party, this is a mere observation, and they should be able to live their lives however the hell they want, whatever makes them happy. Just as long as this doesn't have a detrimental effect on others. I think that's where the line is ultimately drawn. When your collecting spills over, and have a negative effect on others. That's when you have to reevaluate your priorities in life. This, is when you have an issue. |

Oh cool I love hoarders, good to know there is a marathon on today. I dont think VG collecting is hoarding unless you do stuff like hold onto stuff like dirty, no value game boxes that you don't even own the games to, have piles of used NES and Atari's you found at garage sales with no plans of selling or trading any of them, yeah stuff like that. Just like they say on hoarders "collectors have no shame in showing off their collections, they WANT people to see what they have and take pride in it", something along those lines. My collections of music, movies and games is more than what most people would consider to be normal, and I've long since accepted that. The reactions I get from people when they see my music collection, for example, ranges from "holy crap" to "that's the most awesome thing I've ever seen". Likewise, my movie collection is the stuff of legend among my friends and I frequently get people asking if they can borrow my stuff. That's the positive side of collecting that I relate to, since it's something I'm proud of and most people in my life get enjoyment out of it. However, like Andsy pointed out, it's easy to go overboard and find yourself in the red. It's happened to me a few times when I spent too much and have been left scrambling to pay bills, but thankfully I am much smarter nowadays and this isn't so much a problem anymore. That's what you need to keep track of - if you're living beyond your means, if your life is being consumed and if your relationship with others is affected, then it's a problem. If it's your passion and nobody gets hurt, keep at it! |

I have asked myself this question in the past because I have multiple collections that take up lots of space. Games, Dvd's, Blu-Ray's, Cd's, Books, and 80's Action Figures are everywhere. But for me it is 'controlled chaos' as everything has its place and my OCD keeps me in check. Most everything is on shelves or walls or neatly stacked in some fashion that is pleasing to the eyes. So it is not like I can't move around or walk on carpet without tripping over things. Hoarding in my mind is more than just having lots of material stuff. It is having and continually buying worthless stuff and piling it up all over the place to the extent that it is a detriment to ones health and well being and the sanity of other friends and family. The people on that show weren't hoarders... they were collectors. Some collected rotten food, and others collected random garbage. |

My parents have called me a hoarder because I like to save my video game boxes for example PSP boxes DS bokes rockband boxes, ect. And after being told 100 times a day and being nagged i threw them all away and the room they were in now lookes so bland that even a few posters won't change it's style. So ya you guys can consider me being a hoarder/or not say I am a hoarder that is really up to you. Thought I would just share this story with you guys. |

I have found myself collecting just for collectings sake. I see stuff that others have on here and want to have the same. Is this considered envious or just competitive to see if I can make my collection as nice as others, I don't know. I collect older systems a lot and try to showcase what I have. I don't hookup any of my older systems like Atari, Colecovision, Tandy computers since I can use emulators and download the ROM's for the games I own. The only system I really want to hookup is my TI99/4a system. It is my favorite older computer system with the Tandy computers coming in a close second. Does this qualify me as a hoarder? Maybe. I have done some research and there is actually 5 levels of hoarding. It is an interesting read. Thanks for reading. Brian |

I was the same way... now for video game stuff, i sat down and thought about it, and decided on one system i was going to collect for... I decided on the NES. That's it. Everything else I'm buying only if I have a plan to play it. |

My library isn't that big, mostly because I want to do other things with my money. But if I could I'd collect games more. I want to collect for the GBA, but I kinda don't see the point to getting games I wouldn't play. I already do that for the current gens and it is starting to piss me off to get a new game for 30 bucks and keep in on the shelf for 4 months just to see it go to the same price point or LOWER ( Darksiders and Demon Soul's ) and see my opportunity cost to grab it on sale early was pointless. |

I didn't want to come across as someone who thought any video game collecting was hoarding. That was not my intention. I will always be a fan of collecting and will probably be doing this well into my senior years. Brian |

One definition of collection from Merrium-Webster Dictionary says a collection is "something collected; especially : an accumulation of objects gathered for study, comparison, or exhibition or as a hobby." According to Merrium-Webster hoarding is "to lay up a hoard." From the same source, a hoard is "a supply or fund stored up and often hidden away." Using Merrium-Webster Dictionary, we can assume that a hoarder is somewhat who obsessively collects and is ashamed of their collection and hides it from others (i.e. they hoard it away), while a collector on the other hand is proud of their collection and showcases (exhibits) it. The difference is one is proud of their collection and wants the world to see, and the other is ashamed. Are you ashamed of people knowing about your video game collection, or are you proud to show it off? Knowing the difference might help to figure out if you're hoarding or not. |

I have been called a "Hoarder" many times for collecting video games. My collection however is pitiful compared to other youtubers out there! I consider buying all of these games an investment rather than hoarding, because hoarders collect crap which most of the time has very little or near no resell value. If and when I feel the need to sell my games to fund for other things, I know I have something to fall back on if I cannot afford what I want to do! |
