The big news last month is that Netflix has finally come to Canada and is available by streaming through your PC, Xbox 360, PS3 and Wii. I opted to use my PS3 and I took advantage of the 30 day free trial, so the risk in trying it out is minimal. So far, my reaction is pretty mixed. On one hand, their selection of TV shows and documentaries is surprisingly good and I found several that I wanted to watch on the first night. The streaming of the movies is clean and lag-free, and the movies look perfectly fine when blown up on my HD television. On the other hand, their selection of newer movies is very limited and it's clear that they are 8 to 12 months behind on DVD releases and at least a season behind on TV shows. This is evidenced by the fact that movies like "Horton Hears A Hoo" is considered a new release. Additionally, the most annoying aspect is the fact that their database is full of movies that are not available; I searched for several movies and found them, only to be greeted with "No Available" when I tried to load them. Why have it on the list if it can't be watched? I also find the menus clunky and unintuitive, and the cursor seems to move randomly between menus and it makes navigating through the movie selection rather cumbersome. Overall, I have enjoyed some of the movies that Netflix has to offer, but I won't be a paying subscriber unless their selection improves dramatically. Part of my wonders if the limitations on what is available is due to my account being on a free trial, or if this is all they can offer. If the latter is true, I don't think their venture in Canada will be all that successful. Time will tell. |

They are getting more deals with companies everyday for a faster turn around on new release movies. There are some companies now that they are supposed to get it 3 months after the DVD drop. Of course using the mail you can get new releases right away still. I use Netflix all the time, however, I use it for the large selection of shows. If you haven't seen them I recommend watching the seasons of LOST, Dexter, Weeds, and Firefly for starters. All amazing shows. I've found a bunch of great documentaries/information shows(think NOVA) up there as well, especially if you are into Science or Religious History. |

Believe it or not, there is a big difference between what Netflix is offering in the US and in Canada. The Canadian service just launched last month and the selection is, by their own admission, severly limited due to licensing restrictions. Shows like Dexter and Lost are not even available to us, and the amount of contact is very small compared to what US customers enjoy. You'd think that they'd work out the red tape before launching the service here, but time will tell if things improve. |

I'm not really sure what you have available in Canada but here are some of my favorite movies/shows that I have in my Instant Queue. I highly recommend all of these; MY TOP 5 ON NETFLIX: Ip Man - ***** District B13 - ***** Mary & Max - ***** Sin Nombre - ***** Chocolate - ***** MOVIES: Dr. Horrible's Sing-Along Blog - ****/ Eternal Sunshine of the Spotless Mind - ****/ Ong-Bak: The Thai Warrior - **** Shawshank Redemption - ***** Donnie Darko - **** Red Cliff - **** More Than a Game - **** Flash Point - **** ANIMATED MOVIES: Ponyo - ***** Batman: Under the Red Hood - **** Lupin the 3rd: The Castle of Cagliostro - **** TV SERIES: Rocko's Modern Life - ***** Invader Zim - ***** The Rugrats - ***** Angry Beavers - **** Aaahh!!! Real Monsters - **** Hey Arnold! - **** Ren & Stimpy - ****/ Family Guy - ****/ Man vs. Food - ***** -- The only movie that is in English in my top 5 is Mary & Max but that doesn't mean that the other 4 movies aren't worth watching. Ip Man has some of the best fighting scenes ever, District B13 is non-stop action and Sin Nombre has an amazing story. WATCH THEM ALL if you can. -- * is a full star and / is half of a star. 5* is best. |

I know for sure that most, if not all of the TV shows listed are unavailable in Canada, and quite a few of the movies as well. I'm hopeful that the selection will improve as it gets more established. |
