Um, none. Good topic though; I never really thought of music that way before. I'm not much of a music guy, outside of Zeppelin, Black Sabbath, and Iron Maiden (with a couple others). |

Haha, you guys, man. Anyways, might as well be the one with a serious post: Tupac Shakur ![]() Now, let me start off by saying I think 'Pac's image has been tarnished and misunderstood over the years. By a lot of people's perception, he's just some simplistic thug who liked to party and act crazy. It's easy to listen to the majority of his most popular album, All Eyez on Me, and assume he was just another rapper who liked to wild out. Or they think he's just an overrated rapper who's death is the reason for his popularity. But no, Tupac was much more than that. This man has to have been one of the realest, deepest, smartest people to ever have blessed this planet with his presence. Maybe it's me just worshiping one of my heroes by speaking so highly on him or speaking on him like I knew him, but growing up I always felt emotionally connected to his music. He's basically the reason I ever tried to rap myself, and I still try to maintain a similar style to his. Now I didn't grow up in the best conditions ever, I had it better than some kids of course, so I can't really complain. But the thing that probably made it seem so good and probably the largest thing that kept me out of trouble was and always will be the music. I grew up hearing some ol' Pop-Rap bullshit like Nelly, Chingy, 50 Cent, and yes, the formerly mentioned Lil Jon. But mostly I grew up hearing music like Snoop Dogg, Dr. Dre, 8 Ball & MJG, Jay-Z, Nas, Wu-Tang Clan, Ludacris, Outkast, The Geto Boys, The Notorious B.I.G., and of course 'Pac. Most of which still gets constant spins from me. But Tupac has probably always gotten the most, because the majority of his music is not "Bang bang nigga die thug life!" but instead touches down on the social and political issues of where he was and what millions of us live every day, black, brown, white, whatever. From single mothers, pregnant teenagers, abusive boyfriends, neglectful fathers, happiness, depression and the struggle with one's own ideas and beliefs, 'Pac pretty much covered everything in his all too short 26 years here. He was a revolutionary, a visionary, and he liked to have fun. He was the hood's Shakespeare. A lot of what he talked about I had seen, lived, and experienced myself on some level, and continue to today still on some of it. Here's some examples of that: "Moms always work, I barely see her I'm startin' to get worried without a pops I'll grow to be her It's a wonder they don't understand kids today So when I pray, I pray I'll never grow to be that way" - Papaz Song Like a lot of kids today (unfortunately) I grew up in a fatherless home. My dad was a drug dealer with many children from many different women and has been in and out of jail my whole life. And the few times I did see him he was usually on his business. Because of this, even to this day, my mom often worked 2 or 3 jobs at a time to compensate. When I was younger, I really didn't understand why he wasn't around, and when I finally did my only thought was that I never wanted to be him. And as I got older, I began to wonder what the fuck I needed a father for anyways. Me and mom did fine with the help of my grandparents, and that's all the family I needed, man. The song covers all these themes and I'm totally in agreement with it. I have an idea of where my dad's at, and how to get in contact with him, but I think another line from the song perfectly captures my feelings regarding that: "Now that that I finally found you, stay the fuck away from me..." "Pour out some liquor, and I reminisce 'Cause through the drama, I can always depend on my mama And when it seems that I'm hopeless You say the words that can get me back in focus" - Dear Mama Like I said, my mom is a hard working woman. She's done everything in my lifetime to try and make the future better for me, she worked so I could have new shoes every once in awhile, so I didn't have to eat garbage, and so I could have the lights on and a roof over my head. She even went back and finished high school and somehow had time to attend college classes, all while being able to take care of me when I was sick or get me presents on my birthday and Christmas. My grandparents took care of me a lot of the time, so it was my mom's idea for us all to move in together so I could know what a family was and be around people who actually loved me. Thanks to this, I can actually tell wrong from right while some of my peers in similar conditions have no clue. It wasn't easy for any of us for the last 5 years or so, as my mom married this cheating asshole. But for about a year now she's had that weight lifted off her shoulders. I love her for everything she's done for me over the years and hope that somehow, one day, I'll be able to pay her back. "You are appreciated..." "Sheddin' quiet tears in the back seat; so when she asked me, "What would you do if it was you?" Couldn't answer such a horrible pain to live through I tried to trade places in the tragedy I couldn't picture three crazed niggaz grabbin' me For just a moment I was trapped in the pain, Lord come and take me Four niggaz violated, they chased and they raped me Even though it wasn't me, I could feel the grief Thinkin' with your brains blown, that would make the pain go No! You got to find a way to survive 'Cause they win when your soul dies" - Baby Don't Cry Back when I was younger, a lot of people confided in me, and most of them were older than me by at least 3 or 4 years. I always had the best advice and said things that were way beyond what a 12 or 13 (How old I probably was at the time) should have any grasp on. I think 'Pac had a lot to do with that. Anyways, in my life I've had several girls confide in being sexually assaulted, and I said what I could. Once it very personally got to me though. There was this girl who was around probably 16 or 17 at the time, and back in those days, she was like a big sister to me, and her little cousin, man, I was insanely in love with that girl. I might still be. But I'll make that another post. Anyways, they were with some guys who eventually started taking turns raping the older girl. And they forced her cousin to watch her. We were up all that night talking about it and this song, and I did everything in my power to comfort her. She told me to not tell her cousin I knew, and I never did. Those two aren't cool anymore, and I'm not really cool with her that much anymore. Her little cousin and me don't even talk, but I'd do anything to have her back. But when 'Pac was in heavy rotation for me, I always felt like I was always some sort of voice of reason for the people I was around. Kinda like 'Pac was for me. "And since we all came from a woman Got our name from a woman, and our game from a woman I wonder why we take from our women Why we rape our women, do we hate our women? I think it's time to kill for our women Time to heal our women, be real to our women And if we don't we'll have a race of babies That will hate the ladies, that make the babies" - Keep Ya Head Up This one probably should have come before the one I wrote right above, but it's whatever. I grew up around a lot of women, and I have mad respect for most of them and how they pulled through on so little. I've seen some dudes abuse their ladies, and I think they're fucking cowards. I'm pretty sure the above mentioned little cousin is in an abusive relationship now, but we don't talk anymore, so I couldn't do anything anyways. And trust me, I hate that. A lot. "Sheddin' tears When her son finally ask them questions Where my daddy at? Mama, why we live so poor? Why you crying? Heard you late night Through my bedroom door Now do you love me mama? Why do they keep on callin' me nigger? Get my weight up, with my hate And pay 'em back when I'm bigger Still thuggin' in this jail cell Missing my block Hearing brothers screamin' all night Wishin' they'd stop" - White Manz World This has always been one of my personal favorite 'Pac songs. The deepness and emotion you can hear in his voice on the track I always connected with. I think when I first heard this song is when I decided I needed to be deep myself, and avoid the shallowness of my peers. I was real young, but I understood. 'Pac wanted change and revolution as bad as I did. Will it ever get better? Guess we'll just have to see.... "Too many murders, too many funerals, and too many tears Just seen another brother buried plus I knew him for years Passed by his family, but what could I say? Keep yo' head up and try to keep the faith And pray for better days" - Better Dayz Unfortunately, I've lost a fair share of friends to the streets or to the cell, and have more than once sat in my room for extended amounts of time and just get depressed about that type of shit. And even now, my life is fine, but I know that for me and everyone else, we need something better. 'Pac wanted this too, he knew we needed a better future and that things needed to change. Yet again, let's hope that one day we can make this change he wanted happen.... So yeah, there's a few examples, there's a lot more, but I'm damn tired of typing. This may somehow contradict with my beginning statement, but I think we all have interpreted Pac's message different ways. I've met a lot of people who say they relate to him, but I never could figure out how they did. Hell, I'm probably way off myself. But I'd like to think I'm kind of close, seeing as we share a lot of the same ideas, tendencies, and beliefs. Still, even if I'm off, this is how he changed my life. He's been a great influence on me and hope one day I can do something even half as good as what he's done for me. Edited by Mshkote, Dec 24 2010, 01:55 AM.

If I were to sit here and type lyrics that changed my life and helped me out of dark situations, you'd just get an entire page of lyrics from My Chemical Romance and Billy Talent. However, I'll just pick the ones that mean the most to me. "I am not afraid to keep on living, I am not afraid to walk this world alone." Famous Last Words, My Chemical Romance. My Chemical Romance has always been the band I love, and the band that I listened to when I needed some inspiration. It really saddens me that they've been labeled as the "gloom band", because like many musicians, if you really listen to the lyrics, you see that they are incredibly hopeful and inspiration lyrics. They are very metaphorical, and more about telling people that things will be okay, not about telling kids to harm themselves. "Magazines from overseas won't teach you how to feel. They trade in their hearts for indie-rock charts to tell them what is real. When did they assume putting on a costume game them the right to ostracize...Where is the line between your fashion and you mind? 'Cause some of us aren't blind...to be yourself is not a crime." Where Is The Line?, Billy Talent. My friend introduced me to this song in high school. Probably no secret that with my interesting fashion sense, I got picked on a lot in high school. I didn't care most of the time, but we all have those days when you just get the wrong string plucked by the wrong person. I got really upset one day, and he told me to just go listen to the song, he promised I'd feel better, and sure enough, it made me feel so confident that from that day on, I seemed to become a new person whenever put in the position of being picked on...same thing with being on stage, I'd put on a different persona when in front of people as a way to say what I really thought to them without being a douche as myself...thus, Jonny Justice was born. Fun story, isn't it? Haha. Those 2 bands have had major influences on my life, and I fully believe I would not have the same morals or outlook that I do on life if not for them. I've learned more about respect and acceptance from those band than I have from any school or person I grew up around. |

FINE. I'll bite. Yadayadayada.. Depressed 16 year old me, yadayadayada. Underoath. Not chatting about the shit scenester Underoath from 'Chasing Safety' onwards. I'm chatting about the Dallas Taylor Underoath. 'Cries of the Past' will remain an incredibly important album to me, so much so that I own one of only 2000 copies of the album ever made. AND I have a tatoo of the artwork on the CD itself, tattooed onto my leg. Kinda funny, cos I usually don't like that genre of music :| |

Basically anything that Sadistik has said in a song. He's my favorite musician. Everything he says makes me think and say "Whoa, that's deep." He talks about what is real, talks about pain and struggle, relationships, etc. Something that everyone can relate to. "I'm just Searching for Some Beautiful, a dream that I can catch and a person who's unusual." "And after birth, there's just the afterbirth/ And after that's the aftermath and consequences/ 'Cause after life there's nothing that's after death/ And after death, there's no afterlife." "I got two bad Hands, and still built this House of Cards, Just an average Jack up in the Club, who thinks he found a Heart." "And I feel like a modern day Patriot, With a mind of a God and a heart of an Atheist." "But I gave in to all my fears instead/ The only thing that ran more than me (were the tears you shed) When you told me you cut inside ya flesh/ You're depressed and you'd rather die instead/ I could feel my heart tear to bits/ (The first time Ive cried ever since my parents split)/ And I knew, there was no you and I/ I kissed you goodbye, it felt like suicide." "I died once, and I knew that it was suitable/ I died twice, and I sang it like a musical/ I died again when I thought that the noose would hold/ Everything I love in the search for some beautiful." "Year One! I felt the dear sun/ A brand new hope before the tears come/ Year two! I see In clear view/ Ashamed of myself when I am near you/ Year three! I watch the stars fade/ I'm a zombie who's walking through a heartache/ Year four! You're forever away and the sun now shines as my memories fade." "Even though I've never called it perfect/ When I die, I want to know it all was worth it/ I want to know that I tried my best with/ Embracing every moment that I was blessed with/ Every life, every death, every time that I wept/ Every moment, every person, every line that I said/ Every night, every day, every time every place/ Every kiss, every wish, every side of the maze/ Every cut, every bruise, every love that I'd lose/ Every time that I broke and the times that I grew/ Every drop of rain that these clouds would spew/ To help form the man that I amounted to/ And I'm thankful, that I am who I am/ And I've been where I've been and I came out grateful/ When it's finally time to make an exit/ Just know, that I don't regret a single second." -- "The only guarantee in life, is a life worth dying for." - Atmosphere "I don't need no friend, I don't need no broad, the only thing I need is the help of the good Lord." - Z-Ro "Knowin' if I could give you the sky, also the sea, but I don't think there's one thing in this world, that'll make you notice me." - Tonedeff "I never laughed and cried at the same time… Until, I heard a church pray for the death of Obama/ And wondered if they knew they share that prayer with Osama/ Blasphemy and karma, the comedy of drama/ I never laughed and cried at the same time… Until, I imagined, they were suddenly aware of it/ But wondered who's the heretic, and is the true terrorist, American or Arabic/ A mix of surprise and embarrassment." - SHAD Song: "Uncommon Valor: A Vietnam War Story" - Jedi Mind Tricks ft. R.A. The Rugged Man Two songs by Immortal Technique: "Dance with the Devil" and "You Never Know" "Take a look at my life/ take a look at my love/ take a look at my soul/ baby you cant save me/ and you don't know/ that there's an empty pot to piss in at the end of the road, go." - Grieves Song: "U Let Me Grow" - eMC ^^ Song was made for their mother's but their mom's died before they could hear the song. I'm very inspired by the song "I'd Rather" by Three Six Mafia. The song really illuminates the desire to acquire something greater, something more meaningful than the same ol' same ol'. Every time I hear the song I'm inspired to strive for one step above the usual. It really changed my life. |

There's been so many milestones in my own musical journey; i'm constantly broadening my horizons and opening up to new ideas. I've always been this way, but the one artist that has definitely inspired me the most would have to be:![]() Trent Reznor I can relate to every song and album this man has ever put out, so much that it literally feels like i sat down and wrote the lyrics and the music myself. It comes from a place of anger, lust and betrayal, depression and anxiety, and always feeling like you're not good enough. But amidst that swirling black hole there is hope, and over the years it has evolved into a sort of self-revolution, where you stand up for what is yours and for what you believe in. Unfortunately, most people think of Nails as this early 90s hard rock/heavy metal band which is only partially true. It's never been about getting drunk and dressing up like The Crow. It wasn't until the mid-2000s till now, i think, that people have been able to really understand the genius behind the music. Johnny Cash gave it a much deserved nod in his epic covering of 'Hurt', which actually ended up being one of the last singles he ever put out. In 1999 Trent released a double album entitled "The Fragile" and this album was a true work of art from beginning to end, but went largely unnoticed. It is till this day probably the most important album of my life, and not many people can argue that "The Downward Spiral", the concept and the music itself, is probably one of the greatest albums of our time. I'd also like to add another huge inspiration. I won't go into too much details, but l'll mention that he's a very eclectic Italian American with an incredible vocal range and is very underrated for his abilities. You've probably already heard him as the Infected in the Left 4 Dead series, or as The Darkness in the game of the same name: ![]() Mike Patton God Hates A Coward Desperate Situation We're Not Alone Fantomas Ore D'Amore Storia D'Amore From Out Of Nowhere Midlife Crisis When Good Dogs Do Bad Things Goodbye Sober Day Edited by MuayThaiNinja, Dec 28 2010, 06:25 AM.
