If you ask anyone who played video games this current generation about XBL Achievements and PSN trophies, you'll get mixed reactions raging from "I couldn't care less" to "love them". I am not ashamed to admit that I fall into the latter category and I often find myself replaying games and spending large amounts of time playing a title in the hopes of unlocking that achievement/trophy. There is an interesting psychology behind this. In the past, I would just cruise through a game and move on when finished, but now I have incentive to keep playing and explore areas off the beaten path. I find that this gets me more engaged in the game I am playing, improves my overall skills and reflexes (especially when the achievements are linked to difficult battles or intricate objectives) and overall extending the play time I otherwise would not have had. As such, I feel more involved in the games I play nowadays and I find more replay value in them. I don't see my gamerscore or PSN level as bragging rights, since there are millions of gamers who trump me, but I feel a strange sense of accomplishment when I unlock a difficult achievement/trophy. Case in point, I just got the Sly Collection and I am now addicted to hunting down clue bottles in the first game in order to unlock a trophy when I open a safe, and this has yielded a gold trophy as well. Having said that, I don't just buy games for achievements, so don't expect to see Avatar: TBE in my gamer profile anytime soon. What do you guys think? Has the introduction of achievements and trophies changed your gaming habits? Do you see them as a positive addition or a worthless token? |

I have a pretty neutral stance on achievements. Like you I wouldn't buy a game for the achievements and I usually won't try too hard to get them. If I'm playing a game and I realise that on the part I'm on if I turn a lever or something there's an achievement for then I might stray slightly off the beaten track to earn it, but apart from that they're not to important to me. |

I don't care about achievements/trophies. It's sometime funny when it pops up, but I won't try to get one. |

+1 w/ Agro on this To go a bit further, I think its a poor substitute for development creativity. If I cared about stats in a game, I'd keep a pen and paper next to me. If a game is good and I'll get 200 headshots anyways my reward is having a game with good, responsive controls- not some bragging right. Edited by hooflung128, Dec 26 2010, 05:12 AM.

It definitely has made me replay campaigns more times than usual but it isn't the first thing I think about when considering what game to buy next. A clever way to encourage players to stay on a game and attempt to do certain things. It can be fun but multiplayer achievements can be quite annoying and they can sometimes ruin the experience. I don't like the: "Find x amount of items in the campaign" achievements sent and I don't care for them either. Doing races with your friends to complete various achievements or first to reach 1000g on a game can be sometimes fun. |

They have changed my habits alright. I prefer achievements over trophies and ended up spending a lil bit extra to get a game for the 360 over the ps3 for some achievements. |

I used to be into trophies way too much, replayed a lot of bad games just for a gold trophy lol that being said i think that trophies/achievments add value. what may be a 4 hour long game can be extended to maybe 20 by playing the various difficulties and getting all collectibles etc. some games its a challenge (getting top 1% in killzone 2 or 10k kills in resistance 2) and some are just fun (both uncharted games) but it can be an addiction, i played a lot of games i wouldnt normally play when i was trophy collecting. on one hand you might play a game that suprises you (I ended up loving Eat Lead the Return of Matt Hazard) but you also end up playing games you dont find fun at all (trivial pursuit lol) |

They have changed my habits a little bit. I will spend extra time with a game that I really like by trying to unlock as many achievements and trophies as I can... so it can be a little addictive for me. But I never think about unlocking them for bragging rights. If that was the case I would not have created a new gamertag to match my youtube channel and username here. I had about 30,000 G's (still less than most)on an old gamertag but created 'stratamaster78' to consolidate and cement my online persona and started from scratch with the newest games I have purchased. I just attempt to earn them for games that I really enjoy with compelling campaign/story modes that have worlds and enviroments that I want to spend more time exploring. I do think it is sort of ridiculous for some people to try to up their gamerscore and trophies with easy games like sports titles and shovelware but to each his own I suppose. Overall though I do see them as a positive addition because they cause a lot of us to get more replay value from our games no matter what ones motivation is for unlocking achievements and trophies. |

Trophies & achievements have always existed, the original Zelda has hidden items and piece of hearts that you never needed to beat the game. I think a gamer is either a completionist or not at all,all the trophy and achievement system did was turn alot more gamers into completionist and now we have alot of people doing it for the wrong reasons. Before trophies & achievements people would only do it for the enjoyment, hardly anybody would complete a terrible game just for the sake of it. I think they are great and only slightly changed my gaming habbits. Edited by Stephleref, Dec 26 2010, 11:44 PM.

I like achievements and think they do lengthen the time you spend with a game. There is a strong sense of accomplishment when you complete every achievement with a game and produces more challenge once you finish a game to go for the harder ahievements. I have found myself going for more and more achievements in my games and when possible I try to get all achievements. That being said there is a line I will not cross. I WILL NOT buy a game strictly for achievements and dont see why anyone would. Who would want to buy a bad game just to say they got an achievement on it?Gamerscore is a fun thing to share with your friends and I like the interactivity it produces on xbl such as being able to compare games and achievements. But i would never just get a game to get easy achievements. Point is for me the game comes first. The fact that i want to play it first and experience the gameplay. Achievements come second. They are kinda like a nice bonus and incentive to keep playing, something to extend the life of my game. It is never the otherway around and if you do it the other way around then maybe you are gaming for different reasons. If you do though than that is your choice and have fun with those bad games :). |

I did not know that...lol. Oh well it does not really matter anyway at this point. It has been 2-3 years since I have played most of those games so the fact that I could re-unlock gamerscore on them may be incentive to revisit them at some point.

Well with little over 150.000 Gamerpoints, i must say it changed my habit for the good and the bad. I once boosted a few games, and i never did it again. There was no joy, whatsoever. So luckily i came out of that. I played stupid games, because of this, but i also got to play "Easy" games that were actually pretty decent! Since i hit 100.000G in 2009, i stopped going after achievements, and what else that has come since is just because i play too much maybe. |

I fall into the category of loving Trophies/Acheivements. I've had a PS3 for 2 years and only just got my 360, so I've had MUCH more of a head start in Trophies. My trophy level is 11 at the moment, with 3 platinums. I find the trophy system on PS3, with an RPG-esque experience bar of sorts as well as platinums, to be a smarter and more satisfying system than that of the 360's Acheivements. On the other hand, Acheivements are MUCH easier to view, with very little loading and a much more attractive layout. All in all I personally enjoy trophies more because I have a head start in them, and I find the proccess of getting your trophy level higher and higher to be more satisfying than piling up acheivements. With every game I buy I put some time into trying for Trophies/Acheivements, but I don't plan on breaking my back for them. Something to do when I don't have another game I want to play. |

Acheivements have added tons of replay value for me. I used to just do what I needed to beat the main story in a game but now achievements give me other objectives to shoot for. I don't buy games souly to add to my gamescore though. It kinda made me care more about being a completionist also because of the way achievements are recorded in your own personal online profile it's just cool to me and fun. Hate to say some what addicting also. |

I love achievements and trophies! I am a completionist and like to unlock everything in a game. It is just so satisfying to see 100% in games and you feel like you accomplished something. With achievements and trophies, I am able to get the full experience of the game and it is really satisfying for myself to unlock them. |

I'll just jump out there and say it.. I love achivements, and trophies are growing on me. I wouldn't buy a game just for points if it was a bad game, but I would rent it to try out the game and get the easy 1000... It keeps me in the running... when I see my friends have more achievement points than me, it reminds me, Hey, I need to get back to my 360 and rack up some more points. I love the feeling of accomplishment i get from them, and the replay value that they give the game. I can't beat games on the harder difficulties and never have been able to, so the achivements give me more to enjoy on the easier difficulties. I realize my gamerscore isn't worth as much as someone that played on the most difficult level, and I realize that I don't 100% every single game, but those pesky achievement points keep me coming back for more. Well done Microsoft... You got me hooked on gaming again bigger than I have been since the SNES days. |
