Okay, I currently have a PSP and a Playstation 2. Yesterday, I lost my 360 due to Red Ring... But anyway, I want to start a collection of a retro system... excuse me, an affordable retro system. I am stuck between NES, SNES, and a genesis. Does anyone have any ideas? I really like RPGs. If there is an affordable system with GREAT RPGs, let me know. |

If you really want to collect for an affordable system, I say go with the NES. NES games are incredibly cheap compared to other consoles and are very easy to obtain. I would recommend collecting for a system you will actually enjoy playing games for. Personally, I would go with the SNES. The SNES has an awesome library of games that I enjoy playing and is somewhat affordable depending on what condition games you get or if they are complete. Choose a system that you will enjoy playing games for, don't just collect for no reason. Research the types of games on each system and see what you like. I am not a collector so I'm not sure how much this information will be help. Although, after watching countless Youtube channels and seeing people's collections, I think I'm experienced enough to give a great answer to your question.

Thanks. That was my most likely choice anyway. I live by SEVERAL pawn shops. There really isn't much price difference in the games though. NES games sell for around $3 while SNES games sell for around $5. |

Both the SNES and Gen have a lot of great RPGs. The SNES games tend to be more main stream with the final fantasys, dragon quests, and mario RPG where the sega RPGs tend to be more a tad more obscure although still enjoyable. |

Well, I don't know which console to recommend as far as the systems themselves go, but to save a little money besides buying the NES SNES and Genesis seperately, try first buying a clone like an FC Twin (NES and SNES) or a RetroN3 (NES, SNES, and Genesis all in one! ) Now, about RPGs. I LOVE RPGs! AS MUCH AS LUIGI LOVES DOING THIS FUNNY DANCE: lol Just in case you are having trouble deciding I've made u a list of all the RPGs you can get on NES, SNES, and Genesis so maybe these lists can maybe help you do some research;NES RPGs: Final Fantasy (you can also get this on PS1 and PSP, just thought I'd let u know becuz I'm pretty sure the PS2 is backward compatible with PS1 games, and the PS1 port of FF1 was a great port) Dragon Warrior Dragon Warrior II Dragon Warrior III Dragon Warrior IV (DW I, II, III, and IV are also GREAT games on the NES) there's also Crystalis but otherwise I dont know of any other good RPGs for NES you can try looking through the list of NES games on wikipedia here'sthe link: http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/List_of_NES_games I HOPE THIS HELPS YOU Now here's some RPGs on SNES, a GRRRREAT SYSTEM FOR RPGs: Chrono Trigger ![]() Dungeon Master The Legend of Zelda: A Link to the Past ![]() Secret of Mana Ys III: Wanderers from Ys EarthBound Final Fantasy II (FUN FACT: in Japan this game is called Final Fantasy IV) Final Fantasy III (FUN FACT: in Japan this game is called Final Fantasy VI) Final Fantasy Mystic Quest Super Mario RPG: Legend of the Seven Stars (my personal favorite SNES RPG) Ogre Battle: March of the Black Queen Harvest Moon And please dont be disappointed but the only Genesis RPGs I've ever played are: Phantasy Star II Phantasy Star III: Generations of Doom Phantasy Star IV: The End of the Millenium There are two other RPGs on two other retro systems I would recommend: Phantasy Star on Sega Master System, and Paper Mario for Nintendo 64. Oh, I forgot to mention there is Final Fantasy VII for PS1, which happens to be both my favorite Final Fantasy title and possibly my favorite PS1 game. WELL I HOPE MY POST HELPS YOU DECIDE.

Guess what? You could collect them all by getting this: http://www.amazon.com/Retron-Genesis-Triple-System-Nintendo-Entertainment/dp/B003O3EFY2/ref=sr_1_4?s=videogames&ie=UTF8&qid=1295146368&sr=1-4 That way you can collect all your favorite games, and play them all, on one console.

I see lots of great recommendations for the systems you're thinking of buying, but here's some you can get for the ones you already have. Sega Genesis Collection is available on both PS2 and PSP and has a lot of great games, must-have RPGs like Phantasy Star 2-4, and Sword of Vermillion. You can get the PSP version on the Playstation Store for only $9.99 USD. The PS2 version is pretty cheap too. And speaking of retro collections and related sequels, I highly recommend the following in addition to the Sega Genesis Collection: Sonic Mega Collection Plus (PS2) Mega Man Anniversary Collection (PS2) Man Man X Collection (PS2) Metal Slug Anthology (Metal Slug 1-6, and X) (PS2, PSP) Metal Slug XX (PSP version of Metal Slug 7 on the DS) Capcom Classics Volumes 1 & 2 (PS2) Capcom Classics: Remixed (PSP) Capcom Classics: Reloaded (PSP) Namco Museum: 50th Anniversary (PS2) Castlevania: Dracula X Chronicles (PSP) |

Since you already have a PS2 I don't see how it would be too difficult to get into the PS RPGs. Some of them are still reasonably priced and some are a little more expensive. Yet the PSone has one of the most expansive list of RPGs to get either as downloads for your PSP or to actually purchase the discs themselves. I have a feeling that you might already be doing this though.

Keep that in mind, it also depends on what type of collector you are. Are you going for complete games (with case, manual) or just the game itself? PS2 got tons of rare games. If you are into rare games, check out PS2. There are lots of awesome titles too. Like someone mentioned above, Megaman X Collection is one of them

Actually, i really don't think you should ask US what to collect for. You should really go with the system that has the most nostalgic/sentimental feeling to it. As example, i grew up with my Atomic Purple Game Boy Color, and i'm still a huge fan of it. I really love the whole Game Boy serie actually. But seeing you wrote "an affordable retro system" and "i like RPGs", i'd reccomend both the DS and the SNES. The DS is very affordable, and it has definitely some " retro" graphics to it. |

Cheap and affordable dont fit well together with RPG in the same sentence, lol ![]() Well truth is RPGs on any system tend to be the more expensive ones out of the library, which is true for the snes and genesis especially. As others have said, snes has a lot of "mainstream" RPG titles, while the genesis lacks turn based rpgs (has a lot of action rpg and strategy rpgs). If it were me though, I would go genesis ONLY because I personally find that genesis games overall tend to be a tad cheaper than the SNES, if the games are on both systems.
