Hey guys, I picked up this Famicom in a lot of systems of craigs list but it looks sketchy. Its gray and the controllers have the NES design. I'm trying to get more info on it because i cant find anything on ebay or google.

It does look kind of sketchy. It could very well be fake, but it could also be something rare. I can say I've never seen it before...have you tried playing anything on it yet?

First off all of the labeling looks legit. However, they gray trim on the system and the turbo controllers built in throw it off. Those controllers are similar to original NES controllers as well, another factor throwing it off. And I'm wondering what 'Cordless' means on the box. If my photoshop skill's haven't failed me it looks like the Model number on the box is HVC-031C (correct me if I'm wrong). HVC-031C doesn't seem to be any model numbers used by Nintendo at any point in time. HVC-031 was the part number for their 3D shutterglasses attatchment for the famicom though. Anyway, either A) It was a fairly well done rip-off of the system in a country where they could get by with claiming it was liscensed even though it wasn't, or B) you have something so rare there that there is no information on the internet yet about it. I would hang onto it at least for now until you can find more info. Check that model number for me, and check the model number on the bottom of the system. Also see if there are any model numbers on the controllers or cords for it.

lol the model number is HVC-001C, and the box does look very similar to the Japanese boxes.. i have looked up the model number too and found nothing matching this one. The stickers on the system are all the same as a normal famicom so I dont think its fake this is all the stuff the box says:
Super Power 'Cordless'
New Improved
Model HVC-001C
Famicom Family C1983 Nintendo
Japan

and the back of the box is directions to hook it up in english

the bottom of the system says:
Computer Game
Power: 4W
GA8196899

I opened it up and some of the chips say Goldstar.. if that helps

You know, I tried doing a decent search and couldn't come up with anything. The model number HVC-001, as we know, is the model number for the original famicom. The 'C' in this case, I'm guessing stands for 'Cordless'. The term 'Cordless' looks like it refers to the fact that you can get the RF signal (if that's what it's called?) without directly connecting the famicom up to your TV. I'm guessing the power adapter to any Famicom or Super Famicom ought to work with this system... have you tried it out?

I tried looking it up mostly in Japanese and came up with absolutely nothing. Maybe contacting Nintendo of America or Nintendo of Japan and asking if they know might work.

By the way, I found this along the way:
http://beraboman.fc2web.com/silyuhennkiki.htm
If you look towards the top of the page, under HAL, you will see something called a "JOY RADAR" (ジョイ・レーダー, http://beraboman.fc2web.com/mrjoy.jpg). It seems like an awefully similar concept. To top that off, the "JOY" name and font are similar to that on the controllers of your system. It could be that Nintendo did some work with HAL labs to make your system... I don't know though. I'll let you know if I can find anything else.

EDIT: You might want to look for "HAL研究所" somewhere on your system or on the box or in the manuals. I'd specifically take a look at your RF adapter.

I think I've seen a Youtube video about this, if I remember its a japanese re-release copy of the famicom, much like the american top-loader.

Just for the record there is a top loader in Japan, which is pretty much identical to the American one as far as I can tell. It goes for about $50-60 on average around here.

By the way, if you find that video do let us know!

Also, Kolton53, did you find anything about HAL on your system?

Aren't all the Japanese systems top loaders?

You're correct sir-- my wording could have been better. The American model "NES-101" is the same as the Japanese model "HVC-101".

Here is the wikipedia article on it:
http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Nintendo_Entertainment_System_(Model_NES-101)

I haven't read that article, but the main differences that I can think of off the top of my head would be that the cartridge slot would have to be different and the "AV" on the Japanese version was an upgrade from the AV-less famicom.

Back to the system at hand (HVC-001C), it also doesn't have AV. However, the big difference that it has (sorry for the repitition) is that its RF is "Cordless".

Again though, the Japanese models are all top loaders (and incidentally, as I'm sure most of us know, are much more reliable as a result).

that wireless RF thing reminds me of a fairly recent video MN12bird put online of a famiclone.... which also had that feature or something similar.

He mentioned how some of the famiclone companies would do odd things like that to stand out or to create some sort of niche to stand out from the rest of the nentindos... lol

Yeah guys it's definitely a clone.

You have to remember just how many Famicom clones there are out there. They usually come from China and other parts of Asia or from Russia and other parts of Eastern Europe and some of them look almost identical to a real Famicom.

I just picked one up myself that could easily be sold off as a real Famicom to someone who isn't an expert. I could even be tricked by this one if not for the box (you can tell by the box it's not the real deal), the turbo functions on the controller and the fact it has AV output. The original Famicom in Japan didn't have AV outputs nor did it ever have turbo options on the controllers. But otherwise the actual console looks identical to a real Famicom so always be careful when buying a "Famicom" off eBay and make sure it's the real thing.

Others like this one might have some of the logos or colors changed. Famicoms are always that off white, red and gold color combination. This reminds me of the Dendy Famiclones from Russia they usually looked like an actual Famicom except for the gray colors. But they didn't have the NES style controllers.

Yeah that's definitely fake. I'm living in Japan and see Famicons for sale every time I go to Akihabara (which is usually at least once per week) and that is neither type.
The original Famicon was white and red, with only RF switch output available and both controllers were built into the system. The later release of the Famicon added AV outputs as well as separate controllers rather than attached and they changed the color of the system to grey. The controllers with the later release are a different shape than those rectangular ones and the original controllers were red and white to match the system.
Also, sorry for the thread necro. I know this topic is old but just thought I'd give out some info.

Here's a pic showing pics of the two different types as well as info on them.
