![]() So there's this program that airs on the A+E Channel over in America called Hoarders. I recall Browland1 mentioned this a few times in his twitter feed, intriqued, I decided to give it a try with the missus, and now we're completely hooked. Hoarders is a documentary that follows the attempted clean up of the homes of people who live in squallor, or those who collect objects such as dolls, to the point where it's overcrowded and dangerous. Usually the clean up crew is there for 2 days, and after funds are provided for therapy and counselling, to help the hoarders overcome their vcompulsive disorder. This program is absolutely fascinating, as you get to know the hoarders themselves, and the program doesn't focus entirely on the aspect of: "Hey, look at this gross sh*t!". While the "gross sh*t" is well documented, it really is to do with the Hoarders themselves, and they come in all shapes and sizes, all with completely different views on hoarding. Most of the people are beyond stubborn, and depressingly lonely. They'll face eviction, prison sentences or losing loved ones, and still they can't release their grip on their hoard of rubbish. They'll often have rat, mouse or cat feces all over these objects, and believe they're still good, and valuable. A few will claim to be 'collectors' of various objects, but this collecting is such a engraved obsession with them, that it'll often push basic hygiene and the ability to operate as a normal member of society completely out of the picture. One note worthy participant of Hoarders was a certain: Sir Colonel Dr. Patrick Donovan Flannagan O’Shannahan Stupid name aside, this dude was a self titled 'collector' of objects, mainly of Asian origin. Turns out, that as the layers of the onion were peeled away, his 'collection' turned out to be nothing more than worthless trinkets he had 'invested' an obscene amount of money in. His collection had defined him as a person, and while first impressions were almost funny in their novelty, when you look behind the scenes, he was living in complete and utter filth, his kitchen was infested, and he had a few dark secrets that weren't disclosed until after the show... Which stands as a good measuring point for us game collectors. You need help if: a) you sh*te in a bag, cos your toilet is inaccessible. or b) you can't access / use your kitchen, or if it has animals living in it I strongly suggest people check out this program, it's depressing, really sick, but completely mandatory viewing. |

I think my "worst" hoarders episode is Hannah / Kathy & Gary. Hannah is definitely the lowlight of the entire 3 seasons. An overweight farm-grandma who has 16 inbred children. Hannah bears a striking resemblance to Henrietta from Evil Dead 2, and in comparison makes Henrietta seem like a rather social lady indead, despite being dead. And wanting to kill people. The entire 17-strong family had roughly 17 teeth between them, and roughly the same amount of functional braincells. Feral really doesn't do them justice. But I digress, what made the episode most notable was the condition Hannah left her lifestock, and her inability to see that leaving her chickens in cages where they were literally being squashed by the rising layer of excrement was an issue. To make matters worse, she had hoarded so much stuff, her main house was completely full. She was sleeping in a caravan that she shared with roughly 30 chicken cages. The other half of the episode was Kathy and Gary. Kathy was ill, but not a bad person. Gary on the other hand made me want to start punching and never stop. Anyone else have any "favourites"? |

As far as I know, this isn't on any UK channels. I watch onlien. These people aren't made to look stupid, unless they really are stupid. The sympathy card is played a fair bit. Edited by Andsy, Jan 13 2011, 10:11 AM.

I watch "Hoarders" every week and, like Johnny Justice said, it always makes me shiver and I always get rather angry at the hoarders themselves. I can watch "Intervention" and feel sympathy for the addicts, but I can't wrap my mind around how people can live like that and how they can be so rude and hostile to people who are trying to help them. Having said that, it's an illness and an addiction, so there is a rationale to how they approach helping these people. I remember one episode where the cat crap was three feet deep and they found several dead cats in the mess. I think it's the same episode that Andsy is referring to, because this woman had no running water and she would poop in a bag and keep it. The people who hoard animals are the worst for me, since you see the squalor they live in and it also makes living conditions horrible for the hoarder. This week's episode had a guy who hoarded thousands of rats, and a previous episode had a house that was overrun with bunnies. |

Not sure which Doctor it was, but they told a relative of a hoarder that you can't expect to shout at their condition, and have it magically understand the error of it's ways. I can't really understand it fully, but I guess people just resign themselves to the mess. One day they just stop caring... And after they stop caring, they just adapt to it. They must get used to the smell... I guess? |

It's not something that happens overnight, rather the hoard is built up over years and the hoarder just eases into it. Looking from the outside, it's a shocker. Case in point for me, I live with two smokers. I hate smoking, I quit over 10 years ago, but I'm so used to it that I don't notice the smell. But when others come into the house, especially my girlfriend who has asthma, they notice it and get put off. That's why I try to enforce a "get your ass outside" rule when it comes to smoking. |

I only became aware of hoarders in a South park episode when they made a complete joke out of it. I never thought people would be like that in reality. |

I sometimes wonder if I have hoarding tendencies. My CD, movie and games collection is absolutely massive and I occasionally ask myself if I can get by with selling some of it to pay bills. Then I look through my collection and I can't find a single item that I want to part with, because each item holds some significance for me or I see a future need for having it. This even applies to items I haven't opened and am unlikely to enjoy any time soon, but I still like having it and I can't bring myself to get rid of it. Mind you, this is only with the aforementioned items. I have no problem throwing other things away and I'm a long way from amassing ceiling-high stacks of junk. |
