How much do reviews influence your decision to purchase games?

Just as the title says. How often do reviews encourage or discourage you to check something out? Does a high score alone give you reason to believe that a game will be great?

Of course you can only take some words with a grain of salt and it would be wise to check out a variety of opinions before deciding. Even still, your personal tastes may not reflect the same way as the majority of reviewers.

I think my feeling is that I can usually anticipate a rough average score that a game is likely to get before it is released just based on advertising, word of mouth and hype. I like to look past that as much as possible, still can get swept up at times, and read as much into a title before purchasing. I have been burned by doing this in the past and reading some reviews could have perhaps helped save my money, but I still would rather feel like I am the one totally choosing a game myself without too many opinions invading my judgement.

The rest of you?

I enjoy reading reviews but I think if a game I really wanted got a terrible review it wouldn't stop me buying it. This may be due to nostalgia factors or if a game just really sparks my interest.

However, if there is a game I have never heard of and I see a really good review of the game from a couple of people, AND the game is cheap, I will often buy it. A good example for this is Lost Odyssey. I heard about it from a few people, then picked it up for under £5, one of the best buys I've ever made!

I always read (and for video reviews, watch) reviews for games I amk looking to buy. Even if it's supposedly bad, I still like to see for myself.

Ds Games!

I don't rely on them too much, but when there's a game I dont know anything about, It ry and see if there are any positive reviews about it, and take what good things I can out of that. The fact that I mainly buy ds games and lots of people on amazon and elsewhere give certain games low ratings because of visuals makes me just try to find the positive in the game and see if I'll enjoy that or not. If there's a game that has very consistent terrible scores and nothing good mentioned about it, then I take that into consideration.

I would say a small amount I watch reviews to see gameplay mainly or I will see what ING and official magazines think but if its cheap I will just pick it up and try it.

A pretty significant amount actually. There are more than a handful of games I have passed on based on reviews. A game like resonance of fate comes to mind.

I usually look at aggregate scores so get an overall census. I also look at specific sites that I may have a preference on for a certain genre. I look at user reviews also, but there alot of stupid ones especially from fanboys.

Conventional review sites such as GameSpot, and IGN are helping to suffocate the industry, killing off personality in video games, usually by taking under the counter incentives to give the bigger names good scores. It's bullshit of the highest order. Unfortunately money talks, and while this helps the industry grow, it's growing in the wrong direction.

I will visit IGN and Gamespot for their review scores, never reading their summaries as it's the usual poorly justified bollocks. Instead, if they give the title in review a score in the range of 3-8, I'm pretty much guarenteed to enjoy it, sure there'll be some nitpicks, but usually personality will perservere!

As for the higher range titles, I'll usually have to do a fair amount of research. The higher to ten the number is, the more likely I am to ignore it. CoD, Halo, Fifa, GTA. None of these deserve the scores they've been given in my opinion. These site will churn out positive reviews to appease their advertisers, and those games without a marketing budget are judged by a completely seperate regard. See: Kane and Lynch, GOD HAND, Deadly Premonition, Nier

And that's what it all is. Just opinion (usually swayed by financial incentives). The only real reviewer I'll listen to beyond that is Mark from CGR. Because he actually likes games, and gets paid to churn out videos regardless of what he says about the titles.

Massively, I subscribe to GamesTM which reviews are usually excellent, with a 5/6 an average game like it should be.

If a game gets lower than that I probably won't pick it up at all as it probably is pretty terrible.

Scores around the 5 or 6 depends on whether I am interested in them a lot if I am interested in picking it up.

Not that it's new for a big review company to give extremely high scores to games that everyone is expected to buy. Everything from Famitsu being accused of being bought out for high reviews to IGN being over/under critical of games.

I think that Gamespot has really become more uptight in recent years over their reviews. It seems as though they have some sort of standard that doesn't allow them to place scores over 9. I haven't seen too many games get really high overall scores from them. Maybe they have been doing it to try and instill credibility in some way I don't know.

Metacritic is something I've never once bothered to use. I'll browse a few places to see what the general vibe of the reviews are, but that's usually after I've already purchased the game myself. Lower scores often encourage me more to check something out if I haven't already.

I read reviews more for general interest rather than as a guide for which games I will purchase and which games I will pass on. There have been many cases where a game has gotten lukewarm reviews and I ended up loving the game, as was the case with God Hand, so I don't rely on reviews to tell me if a game is good or bad. Having said that, reviews are helpful in pointing out serious issues with a game, such as broken controls, glitches and, worst of all, a horrible camera.

One thing I would like to point out is that reviews are the subjective opinion of one person, and this one person looks at games differently than the average gamer. Whenever I see a review from IGN or Gamespot on Youtube, the comments are almost universally negative. If they gave the game a high score, the reviewer must be a fanboy or was paid off by the game developer, and a low score means that they just suck at the game or they don't know video games in general. They can't win. Like movie and music critics, game reviewers are meant to summarize and critique games, not kiss the asses of the fans. I don't think anyone should base their decisions solely on the review scores, nor should they use them to back up their aruguments on whether a game is good or bad. It's one person's opinion.

Reviews never influence my decision on purchasing a game. I like to read them or watch them just to see what other people have to say and see pictures of said game. More often then not though, I disagree with others opinions. I can not count how many times I've bought a game that got a very low score that I would of given a very high score for.

I like to see the game for myself, play it, and then form an opinion on it.

I try to ignore "professional" reviewers as they don't seem to know what they are talking about (especially IGN.) I do take actual gamer reviews into consideration but I tend to like to purchase a game and see for myself whether it is good or bad

I dont usually take much notice of reviews most of the time. Its interesting to hear another persons opinion, but thats all it is. Most games i see getting high scores arent the kind of game i'd usually play anyway, doesnt help that i usually just pass them off as same old crap...but with a nice shiney new coat of paint of course.

I tend to listen to consumer reviews more than the professionals. Sometimes, those professional critics looks through things more complicatedly and miss the whole point of the product. But yes, people's reviews affect my decision of buying a product.

I think if youve been buying and playing games for long enough you learn how to decipher reviews and trust your own judgement. I can honestly say that it's very rare i pick up a game that i dont enjoy. What i do is look at the professional review and then compare it to what the player's are saying. If there's a difference in opinion there then it might be worth looking into.
If a game is getting slammed on both fronts, it might not necessarily be a bad game, but it might be better to wait until it drops below $15 before taking a chance at buying it, or simply renting it from somewhere.

Also, time will tell if a game really is that good. Player scores on a site like Gamespot always start high then slowly degrade over time as more people cast their votes - the question is how much that score will go down. On day 1 a game might notch a player score of 9.5 as the intial hype kicks in, but on month 3 it might have degraded to a 7. Sometimes after a few months the score sticks at a steady 8.5 or 9, then you know it's probably a great game. That's why sometimes it's better just to wait things out.

They only affect my purchase if it's a reviewer that I can trust. Like most of the people on the YouTube gaming community, unlike IGN, who sometimes just gives out crappy reviews without giving the game a chance and everyone can think it's awesome.

If it's a game like Super Mario Galaxy 2 that I know I'm gonna like I'm gonna pick it up before I even watch a review probably.

I watch a lot of reviewson youtube for suggestions on game I might not have tried before so I can keep an eye out for them in the wild and I also like to check out teh gameplay. But I will definetely buy a game I'm even if it has bad reviews so I can try it for myself since everyone's taste is different.

@Richard I like Resonance of Fate myself, but the battle system does take time to get used to and the story does take a bit to start unfolding because it's such a large game

Systems: Famicom with AV/ Nes adapter, NES, Model 2 NES, Master System, Turbo Grafx-16, JVC x' Eye, Super Famicom w/ SNES adapter, Sega 32x, Virtual Boy, Saturn, Nintendo 64, Dreamcast, XBox, Playstation 1, Playstation 2 (Slim&Fat), Gamecube w/ game boy player, Wii, PS3 80 gig, XBox 360.

Handhelds: Game boy pocket (red), Neo-Geo pocket color, PSP, Game boy Advance SP, Game Gear, TecToy, Playpal, Mugga (Gamp3 player), Atari Lynx, Nintendo DS

Capcom Arcade Machine (Speed Rumbler,1986)

Reviews influence my purchase on video games greatly. I usually do not buy any games on impulse or at release anymore with the exception of some games such as CoD, Halo, or GoW. I like to play a ample of the game before I make my purchase. Demos usually help me decide if I should buy the game or not but if a game gets really great reviews, I usually go get it.

I usually have a decent idea of what kind of reviews games are going to get. There was no doubt that Halo Reach or Black Ops would get great reviews. If a game gets better reviews than I expected, sometimes that peaks my interest and I'd be more inclined to check it out. If it's a game I'm really looking forward to, only universal criticism would make me think twice about getting it.

I like to go to metacritic.com and check out the averages of all the reviews they take in. I usually like to skim some of the higher reviews, middle reviews, and lower reviews to try and get a general idea of what the common praises and criticisms are and then I can decide what else is more a product of the reviewer's perception rather than the actual product.

I think with things like blogs and Youtube, you can really find some great reviews out there. Especially on Youtube, after watching a few reviews from someone, you can kinda get a general idea if you have the same gaming interests in common with who you're watching. Even with sites like Gamespot and IGN doing video reviews, their reviews come off very cookie cutter, with no personality. I'm much more inclined to take the opinion of someone who appears to have similar interests with me more seriously than the more cookie cutter style of the bigger sites. Hell, that's most likely what brought everyone here in the first place.

Reviews literally have no influence on any game that I buy. I do however like to read them because it does make interesting reading material. I'm usually well aware of what games are being released within a certain time frame so I already have it in my head what I'm going to buy before it even comes out.

I don't think I've ever bought a game that I've truly hated. I consider myself a very tolerant gamer and there are a lot of things about specific games that don't annoy me as much as they may annoy other people.

Reviews are a good tool for the majority of gamers, but the more we play games the more we know what were going to like and that is always going to be the determining factor when buying a brand new game.
