The Wonderboy video is definitely my favorite video next to the Phantasy star series Review. Watching it has made me want to share my experience with the series. Wonderboy has always been a big series for me. I grew up playing the games more than any other series that was out at the time. My dad brought me and my big bro Wonderboy in Monster Land when we got our Master System and boy did we play the heck outta it. It got to the stage where we found all the secrets, it was an awesome feeling. What was also cool was I also got to play the arcade version of Monster Land while my parents were playing sports. Every week we would go to the sports complex my folks would do their things and I'd go straight to the cab to see if I could get farther then I did the week before. If I ever see the Wonderboy in Monster Land cab ever for sale I'll do whatever it takes to own it. Later on we found Wonderboy 3 The Dragon's Trap and for me that is still my favorite game. I still hum the music now and then (especially the Monster's Lair theme). I played it around the time of Phantasy Star and both games introduced me to the non linear style of game that would become common place for the thousands of different RPGs I would play later on. Fighting each Dragon was something I always looked forward to. (My favorite fights were the Captain Dragon and the Daimyo Dragon). Although I didn't own it we hired it out a lot of times and like Monster Land we found all the secrets. Luckly 2 years ago I found a copy at my local game store and grabbed it without question. ^^ When I got my Megadrive I was overjoyed when I found Wonderboy in Monster World and like the Dragon's Trap I played the crap outta it. Also like the Dragon's Trap I found a copy of Monster World last year and grabbed it with the speed of light. I actually showed it off in my first pick ups vid. *Spoiler alert* I was always annoyed whenever I finished Monster World and seeing the words "To be continued" because neither the NTSC US or PAL regions got a sequel and it wasn't until around 2000 when my family got our first PC and when I found out about Monster World IV. I was very happy to put it mildly and luckily there was a fan translation so I could play it without any trouble.I liked it but not as much as the other games however I was very happy that it tied up loose ends and finished off the series. It was as if a great weight was lifted when I finished it. ![]() Oh one thing I should mention I did play Monster Lair but I wasn't happy with the change back when I was a kid. A couple of years back I played it again and seemed to enjoy it more than I did back then. I always thought there was just only Wonderboy but to my surprise when I got my Wii and connected to the Virtual Console I found Dragon's Curse. I was dumbfounded when I loaded the game and my reaction was priceless: "Holy Shit! It's The Dragon's Trap but 16bit!!!!! Woohoo" It was then that I did my research and found out about the many different series and games on other systems. I still need to play the Adventure Island games and finish off Dynastic Hero ... it was sad when my Wii buggered up while I was playing it. Anyways I could go on for ever but I'm going to stop here. I'd just like to say thank you to Johnny for an excellent video and as always your taste in games is impeccable. Guys and gals have you played any these wonderful games? If so please share your thoughts and experiences. Edited by RPGswagman, Feb 10 2011, 04:21 AM.

Awesome video! Johnny did a 3-in-1 review way back as one of his first videos, and he very briefly touched on Wonder Boy in Monster Land, but I'm glad he's come back to elaborate on the whole series. I've always been very curious about it, but never really took the time to try any of the games until I downloaded Wonder Boy in Monster Land on the Wii Virtual Console last month. I enjoyed it, and I'd like to try more games in the series when I get the chance. Incidentally, almost all of them (except for Monster World IV) are available on the Wii Virtual Console, including the alternate versions that appeared on the TurboGrafx 16/CD. |

I'm so jazzed Johnny reviewed this series. I grew up and played all the Wonder Boy games! I was forced as a kid to spend my summers in Yuma, AZ to stay with my dad and stepmom. The only thing that kept me sane was an arcade called Pinball Plus. The thing about this arcade, is that they would have Japanese arcade games that I'd never see anywhere else. I played the arcade original Wonderboy made by Sega/Escape, and also Monster Lair the arcade. (This game had a badass soundtrack! The Turbo CD was the only system at the time that could do it justice!) The wierdest one was Wonder Boy in Monster Land. It tripped me out because I thought this was only a Sega Master System game! lol (check out Mame on this one) One note for the collectors out there: If you want to the play Sega Master System version Of Wonder Boy in Monster Land on a Sega Genesis with a Power Base Converter, you HAVE to use an original Master System control pad! You won't be able to play without it. Happy gaming! |

Funny thing is I picked up Dragon's Curse on the TG-16 right when this review came out. After watching the review I wish I had picked up Wonderboy II on the SMS but I have to say, Dragon's Curse is excellent. Currently stuck on the Merman transformation on the Dragon fight but I've enjoyed every second of it. EXCELLENT soundtrack ![]() Always appreciate the reviews over lesser talked about games |

I definitely remember wondeboy as it was one of the first games i ever played when i look back I remember thinking that wonderboy in monster land was Awesome and when i played it at mates place it proved that I had to have it (beg parents in till the bought me a master system and the game). Since i live in New Zealand the master system was more popular than the Nes so i Grew up only playing sega so the Master system and mega drive is where most of my nostalgia comes from. |

Sorry for the bump, but I thought it was worth mentioning that Monster World IV has just been officially released outside of Japan for the very first time today! It's available on the Wii Virtual Console in both North America and Europe, and should also be appearing on XBLA and PSN soon. On top of that, it's been (officially) translated into English! Better late than never, eh?

Thanks for bringing this up, Nester. Not long after Johnny's Monster World review, Sega decides to bring out a Monster World collection for download on XBOX arcade, Wii etc? Coincidence? The first thing I said about Monster World 4.....what was Sega thinking passing up this game for the West? This game is incredible. Gameplay, COLORS,and music. We had to wait until 2012 for an English realease..lol If you can, check it out. Well worth it. |

I DL'd it on day one. I love the Wonder Boy/Monster World series! On a related note, the website Hardcore Gaming 101 recently updated their own excellent article on the Wonder Boy series, and even included a rare interview with series creator Ryuichi Nishizawa who mentions that he would like to make a new Monster World game. Check it out here: http://www.hardcoregaming101.net/wonderboy/wonderboy.htm |

Oh, so cool! What a great birthday gift! Ryuichi Nishizawa seems like a pertty friendly guy. It was really cool of him to send you that stuff! I hope he gets the chance to make a new Wonder Boy or Monster World game someday. Happy belated birthday, Johnny! |
