What games do you think were really ahead of their time for the year or era they came out? These can be any titles you feel really pushed past the limitations of their time or had particular features that wouldn't be popular or mainstream in gaming until much later. I was interested in this subject after playing the remarkable Lazy Jones by Terminal Software for the Commodore 64. ![]() What impressed me so much about Lazy Jones was that this was a game from 1984 and it had so many modern concepts in the game. It's an open world game set in a hotel where you play... well... Lazy Jones and basically past different doors and enter any you wish. ![]() Behind the doors they are mostly little games that you can play that are parodies of arcade titles. Once you've entered all the doors of the hotel, hopefully dodging the security guard in the hallyways, the game restarts. ![]() The game is mostly known for having its soundtrack ripped off in the 2000s dance song, Zombie Nation, but integrating what is essentially a "game select screen" as an actual part of the game turning what is a compilation of mini-games into this open world title just really took me aback. It's pretty cool to see such a retro game do something like that. |
