I have been a Mortal Kombat fan since the start. So image my shock when I found out today that the upcoming Mortal Kombat game has been "refused classification" in Australia. For those that don't know a game that is RC cannot be sold here under any circumstances, basicly that means its banned here. Usally games that are banned in Australia are games that are excessivly violent, however the part that pisses me off is when I think about violent video games 1 thing comes straight to mind. Grand Theft Auto. How does this game get away with be relesed here when its realistic graphics and violent acts far exceed anything in a Mortal Kombat game. Mortal Kombat has never had trouble here, and I never thought it would as the game is fantasy style un-realistic violence and the violece is all things that cannot be done in real life. I have the report from the OFLC (Office of Film and Litrature Classification) that describes the violence in the game and the reason for banning.

The main reason is that it's to violent and the game graphics are to realistic. The thing that annoys me is it lists some of the fatalities that can be done in the game and these are all things we have seen in prior releases of Mortal Kombat (Like Quan Chis Leg Beat in MK4 or Jades Staff Implae in UMK3) and now suddenly they are to violent? I cry bullshit on this. This is not the end I am going to be contacting several media outlets to get my message heard. Read the OFLC press release below, some good did come from this as the Press Release does list some of the feture of the game! ;)

This is a HUGE blow for the Australian Mortal Kombat Kommunity. This was going to be the game that finaly shows that Street Fighter and Tekken fans that MK is fucking better, when given the time to work on it. Im not proud to call myself Aussie this day :(

This continual state censorship coming out of Australia does not make me think highly of its government. I'd think twice before going there.

And mind you, I don't even play any violent video game.

Could you not import it?
Do you understand what it means that the game is banned?

It means that its literally ILLEGAL to own or transport it within the country.

Its not like in the US where if something gets rated AO by the ESRB (which is NOT a government agency) most stores will voluntarily choose not to sell it, but you can still buy it from specialty retailers.

This in Australia means that the game itself is actually outlawed.

Of course I know what banned means. ^o)

Your telling me that there is absolutely no way you could get this game and that no retailer under the sun will send it to Australia?

No need to cry about it, if you want to get it order it of someone who will import it in, and don't tell me noone will send it.

Some movies were banned in the UK for years it didn't stop loads of people having copies of the films.

growing up in europe, I know how much censorship sucks. (They took the pistols out of Devil May Cry for !@#$'s sakes)

Unlike what SuperTrainStationH says, there is always a way of owning/importing it.
You can (for example) legally own a "reproduction" copy ;)

A more shocking news item would have been "Australian government gives OK to new Mortal Kombat game. Gamers rejoice."
