Nintendo Wii sales No. 3 in Japan; no software in top 10

Sales for Nintendo Co.’s Wii ranked third in the latest Japan game hardware figures.

Media Create Co. on Fri. reported that the Wii sold 12,221 units between Feb. 14 and Feb. 20 to rank No. 3 in overall sales.

By comparison, the Wii sold 15,028 units the week prior.

The hardware did not rank any software titles in the top ten for the week.

Nintendo Co. in Jan. cut sales estimates for the Wii console and the Nintendo DS handheld amid a profit drop in the third quarter.

The company this week said it will cut the Wii sales forecast by 8.6 percent to 16 million units and the Nintendo DS forecast by 4.3 percent to 22.5 million units.

Nintendo sold 13.7 million Wii consoles in the third quarter, down 20 percent from the year prior.

Additionally, it sold 15.7 million Nintendo DS handhelds, a 33 percent drop from one year ago.

Current Wii hardware SKUs include the White and Black that includes a Wii Remote Plus, Wii Sports Resort and Wii Sports sells at $199.99.

New titles include PokéPark Wii Pikachu’s Adventure, FlingSmash, and Donkey Kong Country Returns.

NSF-Wii: 'We Dare' Brings Spanking, Striptease to Nintendo
Consoles

Listen: If you've played almost any Wii game since the console's launch more than four years ago, it's probably not escaped you that many of the gestures–the waggle, the pump and the thrust, for example–can be rather, erm, porn-y.

But for all the Wii-nis jokes that sexualized the functionality of the revolutionary Wii remote, that kind of bow-chicka-bow-bow thinking hasn't really made it into a game.

Until now.

UbiSoft's apparently releasing a party game called We Dare! in Europe. The trailer for the game depicts two young couples–who apparently don't mind a bit of partner-swapping– having more fun than can be reasonably expected with such a goofy-looking game.

The reel looks like a trailer for a bad Skinemax movie, what with all the letting-hair-down, Wii-mote dangling and "now, you girls kiss each other" stuff. It's laughable but Ubi's had a track record of making ridiculous premises into hit game franchises, as seen with their Just Dance and Rabbids titles. But this isn't just choreography mimicry or goofy mini-games. This is spanking! And, um, apple-eating. But, really, things look so tame that there probably won't be any sexual steam generated by We Dare! The only walk of shame will be the one home, if you actually buy it. Sources are saying, though, that it won't see a release in the U.S.

Wii 2 will still rely on optical drive for games

We've heard countless rumors that Wii 2 will support HD, but a new report has further indicated that it will still depend on optical drive as the primary medium for gameplay. If this turns out to be true and Nintendo fails to improve on its download service, the Wii 2 could be seriously disadvantaged considering the trend in online downloads for games. Valve's Steam PC platform has been enjoying huge success in this department, while Sony and Microsoft offer growing libraries of downloadable games through PlayStation Network and Xbox Live, respectively.

In fact, we feel that the PS3 and Xbox 360 have caught up with the Wii in many ways. These include motion-controlled gameplay with the introduction of PlayStation Move and Xbox Kinect, family-centric game titles and better affordability. It doesn't help that the Nintendo console is a far less versatile machine which lacks DVD playback, DLNA support and other advanced functions, too.
