Level 4

White Knight Chronicles is a JRPG developed by level 5. In my opinion it is a classic example of a game undeservedly receiving low scores from the industry. IGN gave this game 5.1/10, now I have no idea how much glue they had sniffed before they played it but they could not be more wrong. I have poured over 30 hours into this game and I can honestly say it is one of the most beautiful and engaging rpg’s that I have ever had the pleasure of owning. Right from the start a very clear and well developed story is laid out and the game succeeds in making the gamer feel like they are always on the ball with what is going on but at the same time manages to throw in some curve balls and completely catch you off guard, I will not ruin it but the game sets up perfectly for the sequel and I will definitely be picking it up day 1. Visually this game is hard to match, it is simply stunning. The in-game graphics are gorgeous with the art style perfectly suiting every aspect of the game. However the cgi cut scenes are were this game comes into its own, some of the large scale moments are unrivalled in the video game world and it is simply awe-inspiring. This unfortunately is the games only downfall though; these cut-scenes are few and far between were they are saved for the ‘big’ moments, the rest of the time we are left with in game graphics for the cut-scenes. These are in no way bad but if just a little bit more time had been put in then us as gamers would have been treated to an absolute cinematic delight. The game play itself and the clever battle system are a joy to use, the camera angle and particularly the battle-system remind me a lot of Final Fantasy 12 and this is not a bad thing. As is the trend with rpg’s as you level up you have the opportunity to purchase new skills, these skills are then added to skill slots to be used in battle and can even be mixed together to make devastating combo’s. Transforming into the knights themselves adds an extra layer to the game which really helps to break up any long dungeon sequences; which are definitely not boring but can sometimes verge on repetitive. This game also has a very well developed online mode, so much so that at times it begins to feel like a mmorpg. Each player is given the chance to create his own village, as he spends more money on the village more people will come to it and you can open up more shops etc. These towns act as the pre-quest lobby online and people will come into your village and you will go into theres. This is an excellent feature and the online community is still very active today. Overall this is an amazing game with only a few small flaws, a definite 9/10. I think IGN need to get there head out of COD’s ass and wake up and realise there are some real gem’s out there that they are simply not giving the time. |

These aren't the droids we're looking for.

Great review! I've been interested in White Knight Chronicles for quite some time, and really, really regret not picking it up a few weeks ago when I had a chance. I won't hesitate next time! |

Good review, man! I have been meaning to get White Knight Chronicles but I have held off for a variety of reasons, however this has little to do with the low review scores. I've heard other gamers say that the game has several bugs and crashes, and the solo campaign is underdeveloped and tedious, however it looks like my kind of grind-heavy RPG. The price has dropped a bit, so I think I'll pick this up when I next see it. |
