Great new episode, Johnny!

I had heard of the Shenmue series and always kinda wondered what all the fuss was about, but I must say....now I'm really interested!!

I just googled around and it seems Shenmue II for the Xbox is backwards compatible with the 360....so I'm definitely gonna find me a copy on eBay!

BTW I also noticed this recent news on IGN:
http://uk.pc.ign.com/articles/115/1153038p1.html

So it seems a trilogy is still a possibility!

Great retrospective! I love the original Shenmue on Dreamcast. It's one of my all-time favorites. I never had the opportunity to play the sequel, which always makes me hurt a little inside.

Heh, the voice acting is so typical Sega, but stretched out for a huge adventure game. It's like one big unintentional homage to cheesy Sega voice acting! But that's part of the game's charm.

The cult following the series has developed over the years has got to be one of the most devoted in the gaming community, along with fans of Earthbound and Beyond Good & Evil. I hope the series gets a chance to come back someday. Suzuki is currently working on "Shenmue World", a social game for mobile phones in Japan, but he's said that he wouldn't rule out releasing it worldwide. I think I would spring for it if only to support the series.

Brilliant, absolutely brilliant episode.

I've recently played Shenmue, as part of the Gentleman's Agreement, and while a few things are lost in translation, the care and attention to detail certainly are not. I'd like a HD remake with slightly revised controls, as the movement can be rather blocky at times. Big shame SEGA missed the mark on that, woulda been perfect for a Dreamcast Collection.

And of course, there's the inevitable comparison to the Ryu Ga Gotoku (Yakuza) series. Something that's incredibly dear to my heart. Have you played any of the titles? if not, definitely worth a try, as they're a more adult, violent version of Shenmue.

I really loved the episode Johnny! You really explained what the game was, unlike what most reviewers would do, while not giving the whole story away. That's what I really liked about it. And at first, I wasn't very sure on picking this game up at first, but I just might have to look into it here soon. :)

Man what a great b-day present, posting this video on the 16th. I'll never forget Christmas of 2000, all I wanted that year was this game that I'd have been reading about the past two years and was worried that I wouldn't get it because when I gave my parents my Christmas list and they would ask me, "What the fuck is a Shenmue?" But thankfully having awesome parents I got it for my Dreamcast and for the rest of my holiday break I spent playing it, just as Johnny mentioned when you first walk out of the gate and that music plays I was taken back just watching the world around me and realizing this is nothing I have never experienced in a videogame. Nothing mattered that holiday break, showering???? Fuck that, Lan Di is on the loose, my girlfriend at the time getting mad at me for not returning her phone calls! Whatever, Nozomi was the only lady in my life at that point. Thanks a million for doing this video Johnny, thanks for taking me back.

Great story Bodmin!

Isn't the world an amazing place, Years ago I would go to a great Shenmue site called ShemueDojo.net looking for info on Shenmue 3 lol

The owner of the site George Melita wrote to me on facebook and had seen the video and asked if I have ever been to their site, what a small cool world we are all in!

I think Johnny hit it best when he mentioned the passion of the Shenmue community. There are some very very passionate fans. Shenmue is a love or hate game, but perhaps that is the best quality about it. It means that the fans of the series love it that much more then everyone else does.

I think that the Yakuza series has really kept the attention of the Shenmue fanbase since the disappearance of the series. Basically being the spiritual successor has assured that SEGA fans have had something to latch onto. Unless Yu Suzuki wasn't pulling our legs recently by telling everyone that Shenmue III could be made in the future.

I have a lot of love for the first game, but once I knew the 3rd wasn't coming out, I just couldn't bring myself to finish the second. I didn't want the heart break of getting to the end and being left with that ultimate cliffhanger. It's a bit of my own personal shame, but I can live with it unless Shenmue III suddenly starts production.

This was an awesome episode Johnny, shenmue is one of my favorite games of all time. I can remember that me and a couple of mates played these games back to back we spend like 4-5 days straight just trying to collect all the capsule toys and win all the prizes for winning cans. What i love about these game is everytime you play them you see something new(especially in 2) so it never gets old. I would also love to mention that i love your Youtube channel you and Rob have a real passion for gaming and it is awesome to see, keep up the good work, i am looking forward to seeing more.

All my cirlce of friends loved Shenmue! What I thought was so interesting, is that we each had a different experience after we finished the game. We enjoyed completely different aspects of it. I enjoyed the story and exploration. Others enjoyed the Vitrua Fighter style fighting mechanics. Some liked the mini-games.

I think this was a very personal game for Yu Suzuki. It was like he was given the chance to recreate his own world and return to the 80's when Sega was riding high. This game was made during troubling times for Sega and it just wasn't the smash hit it deverved to be.

I'm sad to say, I never played Shenmue 2, because honestly, I protested Sega for cancelling the Dreamcast. (sound the fan boy siren) lol
My heart wasn't into importing the PAL version or buying a brand new Xbox to continue the series.

Bitter sweet memory of this landmark game. Great review as always!

Definitely one of my favorite episodes, and yes the voice acting is awesome- it reminds me of some of the mid-90's action cartoons I used to love.

was really happy to see this retrospective. The fact that it's still played by fans to this day tells us that the game was more than the size of it's free-roaming areas. Otherwise everyone would still be playing GTA3.

It's the great atmosphere of the game that really classes it as a work of art, and I'm happy to see Johnny talking about that. Many just can't understand why the game doesn't hold your hand or give you total non stop action all the time.
