if you can get translated versions of the original games on the msx, via an emulator or something, play them first. The nes version just doesnt do it justice.

After those 2 games just follow it through like normal. Mgs1, mgs2, 3, 4 etc. Im not sure how the psp versions work in the story but maybe someone else can help eith that.

I do highly recommend the msx games though. Metal gear 2 is amazing...and mgs1 is pretty much a remake of it. :p

the chronological order goes like this (idk about the pre-PS1 games) MGS 3, MGS PO, MGS PW, MGS1, MGS2, MGS4

This is the full correct order (the timeline):
-Metal Gear Solid 3; Snake Eater (1964)
-MGS Portable Ops
-MGS Peace Walker
-Metal Gear
-Metal Gear 2 - Solid Snake
-Metal Gear Solid (or MGS: Twin Snakes)
-MGS 2: Sons of Liberty
-Metal Gear Solid Rising (not released yet)
-MGS 4: Guns of the Patriots (2014)

Personally....I would start with Metal Gear Solid (or Twin Snakes on the Gamecube). Since a lot of the back story is explained in it. And then work your way up to MGS 2: Sons of Liberty, MGS 3: Snake Eater (even though it doesn't fit the timeline) and then MGS4: Guns of the Patriots.....and then play which ever game is left from the bunch.

Go with the order they were released. It isn't necessary to play Metal Gear 1/2(I don't mean solid I mean the NES game and the MSX).

1. Metal Gear Solid
2. Metal Gear Solid 2
3. Metal Gear Solid 3
4. Metal Gear Portable Ops
5. Metal Gear Solid 4
6. New PSP Metal Gear Game

You can play the original Metal Gears wherever you want really. I didn't play them until after 3. Again, they are not necessary, but they are still great old school fun and have a good back story to learn the origins of Solid Snake on some of the other important characters.

i think playing the msx games gives you a far better understanding of the characters in the following games. I didnt play them until after snake eater either, but when i did i actually felt i understood everything a bit better.

Not to mention that they are just great games, metal gear 2 is just amazing. I'd actually consider it a crime not to play it of your a fan of the series. :p
