I just thought that maybe some of you have this book, so I made this topic.![]() If you have this book, have you made your count? I am actually reading it and it is very informative and interesting. For example, I thought it was interesting that the first Pubs to have the Space Invaders Cabinet thought it was broken when the coin box was full. Many people probably already know this so a lot of people will think that I am some stupid child :P. Anyways, I thought it would interesting to share our experience/counts in this thread ![]() -Luqman Hameed |

Is there a synopsis of the games listed or the general gist of the book online? |

I haven't read this before I usually see websites with 1000 songs you must listen to before you die, places to go BYD and so on but not video games. I haven't really read any books about video games specifically just magazines but nothing formal. Would you recommend this? |

I think it hardly appropriate for there to be a list of 1001 video games to play before you die... I mean, it took about a century of film to round out the 1001 films list, and games have had less than half that time. Plus, creatively and technically (from a design standpoint, not hardware) I think games have a good way to go before they're really ready for this treatment (I'd like to provide an analogy, but its difficult to come up with a proper one for this situation since other mediums developed radically differently than games have). Honestly, there are probably nowhere near 1001 games that really are necessary works for the aspiring 21st century Renaissance man. Probably upwards of a 100, maybe more if he wanted to specialize in the medium. And besides, games simply take much longer than films; one could get through the essential films of a decade in the time it takes to complete Fallout 3. So being told 1001 are essential is a bit of a load. That said, I'm probably taking this far too seriously and plan to look at the book anyway because I love me some lists. Do you hold this opinion because game technology evolved faster than movie technology, or is it just because you honestly don't think that enough games are worthy of this type of list? I honestly think you underestimate the sheer amount of really, really good games. The difference between movies and games is that good movies have a purpose other than raw entertainment. Good movies make you think, evoke an emotion, or even just confuse you. Yes, it is possible for games to get those same reactions from consumers, but a good game doesn't require that it does. The pure presence of progression from early arcade games, to home consoles, to PC's and High Definition consoles is nearly unmatched in any other category of entertainment. I think it's highly unrealistic to apply the standards of movie rankings to videogames, because they're completely different beasts. I do, in fact, own this book, though I've only read up to page 67. I have thumbed through the pages, and I have yet to see a title that I feel doesn't belong there. Not only is there a write up of each game, but the history and importance behind it. I'd give this book a chance if I were you. |

I certainly plan to give it a look! If it came off that I think games and movies are directly comparable, that was absolutely not my intent; they are no more comparable than paintings and plays. They do different things, they are different things. In fact, I think the concept that they are at all similar - or should be, at least - is one of the greatest threats to video games. But the rapid technological advancement of games is one of the things that makes them a little tough to sort out. The technology behind them evolved far, FAR faster than most media. Film is the only medium that is close to this rate of growth, and even it was considerably slower. With each step of the way in an artform's growth, there has been time for true understanding of the medium to develop before the technology progresses and everyone's trying to get their head around the new gadgetry. Games, however, have developed technologically that deep understanding of what on deep levels makes one game great and another one mediocre has never had quite so much time to spread. This, coupled with the simple fact that games have been around so briefly, is why I believe there are fewer really great, great, great here meaning "being such in an extreme or notable degree," games than there are works in really any other medium. Which is a crying shame since video games are possibly my favorite medium, and certainly the one which has had the most pronounced impact on my life. For compiling a history of games, I can definitely see the place for 1001 influential and exceptional games. I just think that we're (we meaning everyone) not yet entirely sure what makes great games great and which games are great. This is still an young, strange, awkward, wonderful medium, and we're all still trying to make heads or tails of it. After all, many people still don't really bother with it and a good few still actively campaign against it. I don't begrudge the books existence, really, I just think it's jumped the gun by a decade or two, at the very least. We need to be able to step back farther and take our time to really get a handle on games before we're ready to make judgments like these, if you ask me. Goodness, this post became long, and I think it ended up with me rambling for my own sake... |

I kind of agree with lorddavid. Shure, there are alot of great games, but i don't think you could say "1001 Game To Play Before You Die". I could respect it if it was for Music or Movies, but Games still haven't reached a point where they are something so important. Music, Movies and Books have important messages, which makes them Art to me; something Video Games don't. Shure, there are Video Games with a message, stuff like that; the only problem is that there are very few. Please don't hate me, this is just my Opinion.

I forgot to mention in my post that the book is published by a company that has made several other 1001 books (beers you must drink, etc.), which is why the list is a bit lengthy. I can't exactly fault them for wanting to stick to the format that sells. I do believe that people vastly underestimate the quantity of extremely great games out there. I think that is mostly due to the fact that games are coming out all the time, and it's hard to keep track of just what is being released every year. Even if you just hit the blockbuster titles every year (big releases/budgets, not quality), you're still encompassing a large amount of games. |

It is a good book. Sure there are some mistakes and what I think are some pretty damn bad decisions that most gamers here would be dumbfounded at, but it still worth getting. I got it on Amazon new for a good price and it is worth it. Don't expect perfection and it will be worth the $ for sure. |
