Oh boy. It appears I've been spendrifting on eBay. At first glanced, it looked like I was being careful with my money but eventually it all caught up and I spent over $500 without realizing it because I bought stuff days apart. Most of the stuff was materials to record gameplay footage but I also bought things for my collection, but man, my bank account has taken a huge blow. So now I'm going to halt my spending for the next two months because Anime Expo is coming once again and I want to have extra cash to spend there. So did anyone else ever experience eBay spendrifting? |

That's why for my collections I almost exclusively shop 'in the wild'. I usually never buy anything off ebay that's more than $10 and I only do that like once every few months. |

its happened to me too many times. I now tend to just add stuff to my watch lists. I've gone overboard so many times for games i dont even get round to playing that month. At least if i have it on a watch list i can keep an eye on it. If i miss it, i miss it. It also notifies me if its re-auctioned too which is real handy. |

Once every 4 - 5 months I usually have a big shopping spree where I am like, well just go for it and buy those games to clear up the wishlist. Usually to save on import shipping as well. |

Ebay is the only source available to get older games where I live, so I have to be extremely careful about going nuts on there :p This makes it so that I have to pick which game I want the most, and go for that. But there are times that I've gone overboard and had to eat noodles for a week. Ebay is a dangerous place ! |

That's the danger with online shopping with credit cards; you sometimes don't realize how much you're spending until afterwards and it's often a staggering amount. Thankfully, I don't use credit cards anymore (long story...had a few difficulties) so all my shopping needs to be done in the wild, with money I have in hand. That way, I can keep tabs on my spending and get what I want without going into debt. The important thing to remember is that impulse shopping should always be tempered with restraint, since you can't buy everything you want at the same time. I know people who go on eBay and can easily burn through $500 or more, only to feel the pinch when the bill comes. When it comes to being a collector, patience is a big virture. |

Well said indeed. For a video game/movie collector from the Netherlands I am extremely happy with a creditcard. No longer do I need to pay exorbitant import fees from local gaming stores and they get delivered at home for sometimes 40% cheaper. But yea, it is really easy to spend a lot of money on eBay and other stores. This month I went a little overboard with Xseed games and also a BluRay shopping spree at Amazon. Luckily I could still cancel several BRs and will pick them up later this year. |

Very bad combination indeed. I've fallen victims to "drunken eBaying" a few times before and the feeling you get when you wake up in a sober haze and realize how much you spent is not good. They actually created a program called "Google Mail Goggles", a program that forces you to do math problems that would prove very challenging if you're tipsy. It was designed to prevent drunken emails, but I imagine it could also be applied to Paypal and eBay to prevent a drunken spree. Edited by browland1, May 10 2011, 11:49 AM.

I spend $1000s a year on collecting these days. Every time I try to restrain myself the items I have been searching for end up popping up. The only good thing that comes with this besides my collecting addiction being satisfied is the fact that it encourages me to make more $ and be successful. One big problem I have is that my collecting habits are expensive. I love RPGs and rare collectibles which go for tons of money. |

I just use a debit card for my online transactions and keep the majority of my money in my savings account. This way if I want someone, I have to make sure there's money in the account first, rather than order things and tell myself I can pay for them later. |

I always use debit and I don't even have a credit card(yet will have to get one eventually to build up credit). I love the responsible concept of spending what you actually have. |
