So the other day I went to Best Buy with a buddy of mine just looking around when I saw Lego Rock Band in one of the bargain bins. The sticker on it said $9.95 and there was a yellow circle sticker on the back. Inspecting the bargain bin, it said all games with colored stickers on them are 30% off. For those of you who don't know, you can import songs from Lego Rock Band to use in Rock Band 2 and 3 for a fee of $5, so being the Rock Band buff I am, I thought "Hey, I pretty much get around 30 songs for $12, thats not half bad." and decided I'd pick it up with the $13 I had in my wallet at the time. As I went to the check out, I thought that even if they didn't aknowledge the 30% sticker that I'd spend no more than $12, tax and all. I said hello to the cashier and she rang up the game and I looked at the monitor. Lego Rock Band $21.98 She was asking me if I wanted a warranty on it and I interrupted her asking about the giant sticker on the front that said $9.98. She looked at it and was as confused as I was. She asked the cashier next to her and he pointed out a little fine print on the sticker that said "Expires 4/11/2011". I told the woman that I wouldn't be buying the game today and thanked her for her time. As we were walking out, my friend said I should have pressed the issue and had them charge me the $9.95 as listed on the case. I had been in similar situations before, I got Pokemon Platinum for $15 at launch because Target put them on the wrong rack, so I knew that stores often do sell you misplaced games at the lower of the 2 prices, but it really wasn't a big deal and I didn't want to hassle the staff over $10. But the reason I'm making this post is I wanted to know what was your take on the situation? Do you think they should have sold the game at $9.95 since they didn't take it's sticker off on it's "expiration date"? Or do you think anyone who encounters this kind of situation is unfortunately just S.O.L? What have your experiences been with this kind of thing? |

Never experienced this though one day I was buying my copy of Taito Legends and when it was rang up, it came up at $50. Though quickly the cashier realized that she marked it wrong and it came around $20. I'm saying that it's probably human error. If it did expire, they should've removed the sticker but they just plain forgot about it. BTW, what does S.O.L mean? |

SOL = Shit Outta Luck I've had a store try to ring up the wrong games during a Buy 2 Get 1 free and try to give me the worst deal out of it. I pretty much explained that I could walk out and walk back in and just do a separate transaction each time and they gave in. I don't understand why you wouldn't want to give the best deal to someone spending $300 on games :/ Giving them the worst deal to me says we don't care if you come back. |

Sounds a lot like Gamestop But yeah, I can see that line of thinking. I'd ask if there was some kind of deal they could give me if I were spending $300. In this case they should have been nice and just rang them up from most expensive to least expensive and give you every third one free without you having to hassle them, though I think they'll try to squander as much money out of a customer as they'll let them. Makes me wish there were more Mom n' Pop stores where I lived. |

That be correct! ![]() My thing is, if I'm a business owner, you treat your customers right so they come back and spend more money. It's not everyday someone comes in and spends $300 on just games. I would treat that guy right so he will want to come back again. There's obviously alternatives and I've been drawn to them. Anyway, I've also seen games just priced horribly high for no reason. It's interesting to walk into a store and see a Wii Wheel priced at $20, 3rd party offbrand, and in really bad condition. I asked them why it was priced so high and the Sales person I was talking to said "I dunno." lol |

I completely agree, but Gamestop views it's main consumer base as the moms of kids who go in there and don't really know what they're doing and get swindled into buying "great deals" or convinced to pick up games by their kids who don't know anything about money anyway. Check out this Gamestop training video sometime when you get the chance. As inocent as it may seem, we know how this kind of stuff translates to real life situations. But thats a topic for another time...

If the ticket has an expiry date on it then you don't really have a leg to stand on. In the UK anyway it's to the stores discretion if they will meet the price, the only way you would get it for the sticker price is after you have paid for it they can't charge you more, before then they can say it's a mistake. |

That was pretty much my stance on the whole thing. Yeah its kind of cruddy they'd put an expiration date in small print where you'd only really notice it when someone points it out to you and not take it off a month after it expired, but what are you gonna do? But a lot of times, in mine and friend's experiences, if they make a mistake they usually say "Well, our loss" and give it to you for that price. If nothing else, it might get you back in the store to try and catch more mistakes and if you're in their store, you aren't in a competitor's... But hey, can't knock a company for not wanting to lose money. Heck I can't even say that for sure really, since I didn't talk to a manager or anything. I kind of want to know what their stance on that is now... |

This has happened to me on a few occasions and I always try to get them to honor the price that's on the package. How successful I am depends on how helpful the manager working at the time is, since the cashiers can rarely make price adjustments without manager approval. On a few occasions, the manager was fine with it and made the adjustment without questions, however there have been other times when they held their ground and simply told me that I can take it leave it. I'm not talking about a game being misplaced on a "sale" rack or something, but the price sticker on the game itself stating one price and the register stating something else. If I don't get what I want, I do try to escalate it and get someone who will help me, and I am successful about half the time. However, I don't get nasty or belligerent since being nice about it definitely increases the odds that someone will want to help you. However, this is a two-way street. When I first bought my Xbox, the two games I specifically wanted to get were Dead Space and The Orange Box, and both had a sticker price of $39.99. When the cashier rang them up, they were $19.99 each. That was a sweet deal with worked in my favor, so mispricing is not always a bad thing. |

There is also a trick that sometimes works for me. In Canada, we have two main "Big Box" stores - Best Buy and Future Shop, in addition to Wal-Mart. Most of them have weekly flyers that advertise deals on games including recent price reductions. If you find yourself in a store where a game is priced higher than elsewhere, you can ask them if they will match the price and they often will. A manager may need to call the store where the games are listed as on sale, but I have had many occasions where they have reduced the price based on it being advertised lower elsewhere. |

If something isn't supposed to be on sale and there was some type of mishap, I have no problem paying the full price, I'm not trying to get away with anything, although I don't like when stores do things like what sdcpro has said, because that's just the employees or management trying to get what's best for them, not a sale that expired or a misplaced sticker or something like that. |

Stores like Best buy and Gamestop are numbers games. And by numbers I mean people...$300 is a lot to you and me, but to a Best Buy it's a drop in s bucket, unfortunately. If you were at a mom and pop store then $300 means something. But 21.99 and 9.99 at a Best buy is nothing to an owner. Plus, you are dealing with a cashier who doesn't give a shit about their job |

Yeah, I'd have to agree with pretty much everything you said... Makes me want to find some "Mom & Pop" stores in my area. Bouncing from Gamestop to Movie Trading Co.(Vintage Stock) to Best Buy to Half Price books gets kind of boring and redundant after a while

I really don't care if there's an expiration date or not on a sticker. If the sticker is still on the game, the price should be honored. At that point, it's not something that was put on a shelf with the wrong price. The store has branded the item with a price and it's their responsibility to adjust their prices otherwise. While I'm at it, I'm also going to check the price of said item online at the same store to see if there is a discrepancy. Sometimes the items ring up higher than they're listed online. I know some places don't update their labels to mark a price decrease (I'm looking at you, Gamestop). Sometimes the sticker will note a higher price than what's in the system and it will try to charge you the old price instead of the new one. I don't have a problem asking for a current price at Gamestop before I'm rung up, because I'm friends with the manager. Anyway, my biggest problem with situations like this are the people who are only willing to buy an item at a certain price and end up getting coerced into spending more money than is advertised. |

Since the sticker did say it expires on a certain date that its on the person that buys its fault for not seeing it. Just like how coupons have expire dates on them. They usually cannot be honored afted this date and are listed on them. However, I do think the stickers should have been removed or covered up after the date as this could be a problem if multiple try to pick up the games thinking they are cheap. |

I will say that I've never picked up a game with a price sticker on it that had an expiration date. That's kind of odd, actually. |

Yeah, that's definitely odd. You don't really think to look for an expiration sticker on a price tag. It does bother me they didn't bother to remove the sticker on it's expiration date. I mean I could understand a week maybe, but a month and a half? Thats a little overboard. |
