7th Guest and Shovelware games

Gamer. Graphic Designer. Geek.

Sorry to throw two topics in one post, but I'm going to anyway lol...

First, I was a fan of "The 7th Guest" and "The 11th hour" some of the earlier CD-ROM based PC games. At the same time I was not a big fan of the MYST series. I've never seen anything really since these two games that gave me the same type of feeling. I was a little young to understand most of the puzzles, but the environments intrigued me and drew me in. Does anyone know if there are any games that are kind of spiritual successors to these two games? They don't even really have to be PC, any PS3 and 360 game titles would work as well.

Second, Has anyone had any experience with the $5-$10 shovelware PC games that Wal-Mart and other department stores carry? If you've seen them, I'm talking about all of the titles by Big Fish games and similar companies. Some of the puzzle games look pretty fun for what they are and for the price. Any recommendations here?

Third, The reason I combined these two topics into one post is because some of these shovelware games look like they play similar to the 7th Guest/11th Hour games. I have no experience in the matter though.

I was a fan when i was younger, but for the life of me i cant really remember a lot of the actual games. Was Christopher Walken not in one of them? I dont think theres really much in the way of a successor to these games, the FMV puzzle genre died just as quick as it arrived unfortunatly.

You could try phantasmagoria or gabriel knight 2, but they are more of the point and click sierra games that included FMV rather than animation.

We dont have wallmart here, but i kind of get the style of games your on about. I bought "Darkfall:The Journal" from GOG.com and it has that same freaky/horror first person style adventure feel. i havent gotten far as i keep getting distracted, but i think the horror element actually gives the genre a far more imressive and captivating feel, rather than the boring mundane myst style game.

Sega Does What Nintendon't

A lot of those Walmart games are the "find hidden objects" games even tho looking at the case they totally look a lot like 7th guest.

Have you heard about The 7th Guest III: The 13th Doll? Its a fan made game that takes place in between 7th Guest and 11th hour. Here is a link to there web page.

Shivers or Phantasmagoria are about the only ones that come to mind that's close to 7th Guest.

On a side note you should try out Grey Matter if you like point and click adventure games. I have been playing it and so far its been great! I highly recommend it.
