Should Microsoft make a handheld ? I personally think that Microsoft should make a handheld to compete with the Nintendo 3DS and the Psp. So what do you guys think ?

Microsoft has technically dipped their toe into handheld gaming with the Windows phone, which offers an array of games and even support for achievements. Frankly, the handheld market has been dominated by Nintendo for so long and the killers games for the iPhone and Android phones are making it harder for new players to enter the market, so I don't see Microsoft making a dedicated handheld for gaming. If anything, I can see them shoehorning it into mobile phones and stopping at that.

Apparently Windows 8 is going to allegedly support Xbox Live.. Don't know what's true or what's not but check it out: http://www.blisteredthumbs.net/forums/showthread.php?438-Windows-8-Getting-Xbox-Live!

It would be nice if they did, but no, you need some expensive smart phone plan with huge monthly bills if you want to play their handheld games. I hope they release a dedicated one some day. I'd like to see their approach, and also the games without the monthly fees.

even though i loathe the live monthly fees, i think about it this way: at least we're all paying for quality. Quality servers, quality support. I mean I'm a Computer Networking student at my college and we work with Microsoft based servers (2000 server, 2003 server, 2008 server etc.) and damn, that stuff is no joke.

I would look into getting a handheld by Microsoft if one eventually came out. Gears of War and Halo would be pretty fun on a handheld.

I don't think they'll make one. They are already pushing windows phone 7 with XBL compatibility too much, and handhelds/handheld games aren't selling as well as phones and phone games. They already have the section of the mobile market they want, and I can see them expanding that instead of making a new portable. Now what they might do is what sony did, and push for some phones with game controls built into them. Also I'm very excited to see the next version of windows being tied in with XBL. I think that is a move in the right direction for PC gaming. They might be able to make a few things happen that steam hasn't been able to. (Not that steam isn't a great service, it is.)

It has potential, but I don't think it will be better than the PSP and DS, which is probably why they haven't made a handheld yet... Portable Halo though? SSSSWWWWEEEEEEEEETTTT

The way I see it: Nintendo and Sony are the two main competitors in the handheld gaming market. Apple and Andriod have been having their own intense duel outside of Nintendo and Sony. As browland1 said, this makes it difficult for new competitors to enter the market. Microsoft has had some experience, making good games on their phones, but are not going to be major contenders for the market.

Yes and no. There are a lot of people who want to see a Microsoft handheld, myself included. However, the PSP line has a lot going for it right now. The PSVita looks like it's going to dominate the handheld market. It's a risky move, but I would buy it.

I, personally, don't want to see one.
As a previous poster has already pointed out, the Windows Phone is as far as I can Microsoft going in any form of handheld market.
Also, how would they market it?
You would need to be connected to the internet everytime you played so your gamerscore would register to other gamers online, you would also have nothing but downloaded content, or would you introduce discs?
I just personally don't see this being a route Microsoft would ever take.

I do not think Microsoft should get into dedicated handhelds and the reason is simple: smartphones. I firmly believe that in 5 years we'll be playing most portable games on a smartphone or tablet that we carry around with us.

Already the picture is kinda grim for Nintendo:

no, because most of the attention microsoft gives the xbox360 could be completely shifted to the new handheld
