Hudsonsoft made the Turbografx and they tried to push Bonk as their mascot. I was thinking about it earlier. Why Bonk and not Bomberman? He was more popular and well known. |

they made bonk their mascot because he was the recognizable platfomer... SEGA: Sonic, Nintendo: Mario all 3 platformers. Platformers were the thing back then |

I wouldn't really say Bomberman was more popular, either. Maybe in Japan, but not so much in the US. |

The PC-Engine was born from a combined effort by NEC and Hudson Soft when NEC wanted to create a gaming console and Nintendo turned down Hudsons designs for a new 16 bit graphics chip. Also Bomberman already had 4 different games released by the time he made his way to the PC-Engine, 3 for the MSX and 1 on the Famicom. Bonk was originally a comic that ran in a PC-Engine magazine that became so popular in Japan that they decided to make it into a game for the system and commissioned Atlus to make the first PC-Genjin game. In Japan Bonk is know as PC-Genjin (Pithecanthropus Computerurus Genjin) being a play of words on the Consoles title and Genjin meaning pithecanthrope or primitive man. The Game won many awards and became very popular so Bonk just sort of became the Mascot for the console. It wasn't until Turbo Technologies Inc. took over in the US and released the Turbo DUO that the system got the official mascot Zonk. Zonk is the futuristic version on Bonk and was in 2 very popular SHUMPS for the console and featured in almost all the Turbo DUO North American Adds. There was also Johnny Turbo that was used as a early mascot before Zonk to push sales and promote the Turbo DUO console.

It really wouldnt have made sense to make bomberman the mascot, seeing as he was on many other consoles too it could have got a little bit confusing and not made much sense. Though i do personally think he is a far more recognisable character than bonk. |

I think Bonk was fine. Part of the problem is that they had "multiple faces of the Turbo Grafx" over the years, something that likely caused confusion. If they just used Bonk and stuck with him, it may have helped a bit. |
