I was wondering if anybody else thought that the PS2 was the greatest console of all-time. It will always be my favorite because I got so much enjoyment. The library of games is unmatched in my opinion. The games on it were so good, I always went to a midnight launch when I could. Nothing like staying home from school to play the new Ratchet and Clank that just came out :) So, is the PS2 your favorite console of all-time. If not, where would you rank it?

Terrible topic.
I'd rather play with dog shit than the PS2.
It aint my fav console either man, but seriously?

You would rather play with a turd than play R-type final, Gradius III&IV, shadow of the colossuss, silent hill 2, hitman series, metal gear, we love katamari, okami, ratchet and clank etc etc

...and the ability to play the vast ps1 library?

I think playing with turds would be the furthest thing from my mind...

Out of all of the things listed there.
I would not play with poop for Okami.

I love Okami.
Shame it's on a terribad console.
The Wii version would've been amazing if they didn't botch the port.

But yes.
Ps1 = IDGAF
PS2 = IDGAF
PSP = IDGAF
PSV = IDGAF
PS3 = Yes please!

TBH its not anywhere near my fav console, but i dont see how its a "terribad" console. I think the DVD player sucks ass and always fails, and im not so keen on the PS controller anymore, but i dont see whats so bad about it.

Sure it gets overly praised too but that doesnt mean it sucks. The NES is really over-rated but its still a good console.

@helsinkirocks,

Excuse me, but I'm glad you have an opinion, albeit an unpopular one. But at least you could do us a favor and explain why you dislike the PS2, or any other given system or game for that matter. So far, it doesn't make any sense, it just seems like you're trying to bait people to respond to you negatively. If you really feel the PS2 is so bad, explain WHY and be courteous about it.

As for myself. I really enjoy the PS2 because it has an expansive library of games, and you could generally find any kind of game on the console. But I don't know if I'd go as far as to say it's the greatest console, but it's undeniably one the best.

PS2 I would rate among the best consoles of all time, but I'd hesitate to call it the best of all time. I'm just one of those guys that sucks at picking "Top" anything because I always find it so hard to choose. It's definitely one of the best with it's cool DVD & CD playing feature and it's MASSIVE library when you include the mass of PS1 games also in there, but yes. The PS2 is awesome and probably one of my favourite systems, there are definitely more good games than bad with a seemingly never ending mass of titles to choose from. Long live the Playstation 2! :D

Perhaps because I simply don't like the console?
Sure it has 1,000s of games- but how many are worth playing?

I've owned probably 200 - 300 in the last 9 years and I've only found about 6 worth keeping around:
Okami
DMC 1
DMC 2
DMC 3
Yakuza
Yakuza 2

The console was nothing but a hype machine that, imo failed to deliver in every regard. Poor DVD player, poor hardware reliability, graphics that aged terribly compared to other last gen systems. The graphics on this system are so poor that I can barely even play them- yet I have no trouble playing DC, GC, or XBOX games. This is also why I avoid the PS1- its games aged AWFUL because of the poor hardware.

The PS2 is an all-around mediocre console and all it has for it is sales- but as we all know- Sales =/= Quality. Sure- I'm using a hyperbole of my distaste for the system- but that is simply to counteract all of the people using a hyperbole to say it is teh graytezt consoul evAR!!!!11.

As long as people go around giving the PS2 a figurative blowjob 24/7- I will troll the people who worship it like gods gift to gaming.

If you feel that there was only a number of games worth playing, that's completely fine. But my list of favorite PS2 games is vastly different from yours. I've asked others, and their list is vastly different from mines. I always thought this was a testament to the PS2's expansive library, and how it's capable of appealing to different people with different games. As much as I enjoyed the Gamecube, most people bought it solely for first party Nintendo games.. Which is why the Gamecube generally didn't do as well as the PS2.

Most economical DVD player, but I never had a hard time with watching movies on it.

poor hardware reliability,

I had more of this problem with the current gen consoles in this regard. Technological advances comes with its defects, sadly. I can still turn on my Genesis or NES just fine. Do I see my PS3 last me another decade? Probably not.

What you're saying here baffles me entirely. That would imply that you steer clear from the 32-bit and early 3D era entirely, or even games on a CRT(?..) I personally don't hold this problem and find that the graphical limitations of certain hardwares make the games characters more endearing, I've also felt this leaves room for the imagination, but obviously I'm not trying to state this feeling is mutual. To some degree I agree though, after the Resident Evil remake on the gamecube, I couldn't really see myself going back the Playstation original.

There is no reason to hate on other people just because your opinion is different than there, that being a jerk. It goes against everything this community stands for.

The ps2 is the best console of all time if the criteria is the games. It had the biggest quality library of games on any console in history.

I am so sick of freaking Dreamcast being turned into the second Crucifixion. The console wasn't that great get over yourselves people. I try to respect people's opinions, but it is getting out of hand. That console has become so overrated today it isn't even funny. That whole freaking console is a freaking arcade emulator with a few hidden gems. Some of you people are so obsessed with trying to be different or root for the underdog that you have your heads so far up your asses that you will not realize there are reasons for a consoles death.

PS2 is so much better than the dreamcast it isn't even funny. It isn't even a competition.

Ps1>Saturn. NES/Genesis/SNES>Turbo Graphix. PS2>Dreamcast. Gameboy>*insert here million failed handhelds* Oh and guess what I own all these systems you guys love to put on some Godly pedistol. They don't compare to any of the main consoles that destroyed them. They all shared similar traits. Sure they had SOME great games, but some does not equal the library of the winners.

teh graytezt consoul evAR!!!!11

and heres why...
Best fighting games of all time. Between the PSX and PS2 you could play
Street Fighter
Tekken
Soul Caliber
Rival Schools
Mortal Kombat
Guilty Gear
etc. etc. etc.

Action Adventure....
Metal Gear
GTA(yep sandbox games on consoles started right here)
Incredible Hulk(for my money ultimate destruction was the king of sandbox)
Sly Cooper
Ratchet
DMC
GoW
Tomb Raider
Armored Core
MegaMan Legends
more than I can even remember

Survival Horror... Other than the Saturn it started on the PSX which rolls into the same library.
Resident Evil and Silent Hill anyone?

RPGS
Final Fantasy series
Dragon Quest series
FF Tactics
Persona series
Xenogears
Front Mission
Xmen Legends!!!
.... Pretty much anything from Atlus, Working Designs, Enix and Squaresoft came hard.

I think the NES, Genesis, or SNES might have some arguments for the crown but nobody has a library as deep as the PS2. Dreamcast was awesome but I hated the controller and Richard is spot on by saying awesome emulator system. Nintendo fanboys will live and die by the N64/Wii but at the end of the day to me they are great party systems with amazing first party support thats it.

@helsinkirocks excellent trolling by the way. My hats off but at the end of the day Yakuza was a poor mans GTA/Shenmue..... Trolling 101.

I have two problems with this.

1) I never said Yakuza was better than Shenmue. I love Shenmue and it is my 2nd favorite franchise of all time. I said Yakuza was one of the best games on the Playstation 2. Shenmue is not on the PS2 therefore not on my list of "good ps2" games.

2) GTA and Yakuza are not even in the same genre. GTA is a no rules sandbox game where you can do basically anything you want and the story is mostly there for something to do. Yakuza is basically a 3D beat-em-up in an open world where the focus is more on story and characters and more realism. Vastly different games that simply cannot be compared.

Also, to the fellow complaining about the Dreamcast-
You clearly have no idea why the console failed. It wasn't the games. It wasn't the sales. It wasn't piracy. Sega just essentially was out of money and could no longer support hardware development thanks to the Saturn (<-- the trust most overrated console, despite me loving it), 32x, and Sega CD. Sales for the Dreamcast were strong and it sold almost 11 million in 3 years- which is about half of what the gamecube did in 6 years. The Dreamcast (if fully supported the entire generation) could've passed the Gamecube in sales and gotten closer to XBOX numbers.

Also that ~11 million sales were only accurate up to September 2002- Sega sold Dreamcast units in Japan until 2006 and licensed games until 2007.

Mr. iOS

I had a very limited experience with the PS2. I owned the smaller version which broke on me twice. I stopped giving it a chance the second time it broke and switched to the Xbox (original) and it still runs fine up to this day. I think the fact that there's thousands of games available for the PS2 earns it points, but in the end, all that matters are the games that can actually make an impression. I was 13 years old when the PS2 came out so I played what most 13 year olds would play (Wrestling games and Grand Theft Auto) and with all honesty, I thought I had better memories with the PS1.

The bulk of my arguement: (Long enough eh?)

I too had my fair share of problems with the PS2, i think it was one of the first consoles i ever had any "real" hardware problems with, as did a lot of my friends. Im pretty sure it helped some of the sales too seeing as a lot of people just went and bought another when they broke down.

This said though, i still think it has a phenomenal library of games which is what seems to matter at the end of the day. I agree the xbox is personally better for me, much like the Master System is my prefered console next to the NES. The NES is another console that gets maybe a little more love than it really deserves in my eyes. Its well known for its 72 pin connector failing to make contact with cartidges, resulting in the blinking lights and inability to read the games. Yet my Master Master System is still fighting fit and still works perfectly to this day.

Even with this, i dont go around saying the NES is trash and that its a piece of s**t. It has a really impressive library of games that i just cant argue against at the end of the day, and is a great piece to have in anyones collection. Even if they did have a monopoly on console game development, which is what really hindered the Master System at the end of the day...even though it actually had the better hardware. :/

I think the point is...Even if you dont care for the console or even if you have some horrible distain for a console, you cant just make brash bold statements without being able to back it up and really make your point. Theres only a handful of games i like for the NES but damn...so many people get so much joy from that game library that i just cant publically slate it like that.

Again, i like the dreamcast, but i think its getting way more hype these days than it really does deserve. Though it has some amazing games i also find that it has far too many ports of things already on PS1 (even if they are better versions)
released years earlier or you had to import the stuff from japan. I find the controller was badly designed too. Its comfortable, i like the anologue stick, love the shoulder triggers, love the 4 pad ports, and i sorta like the dpad but...the face buttons are rubbish and the fact that the damn wire comes out of the bottom of the controller is a REAL big oversight. That disk drive sounds like its gonna cut right through the casing and you cant even fast forward through songs when listening to audio CD's.

This really annoyed me when my cd player broke, i only had the DC to listen to music ans i was trying to learn songs on the guitar. What kind of cd player doesnt have fast forward or rewind? This said, i still love it...but it is horrendously flawed. :-/

@dungeonmaster81:

I personally find the PS controller awful for beat em ups, the style of the d-pad is the most unforgiving thing when trying to pull off special moves in Streetfighter and Mortal Kombat. IMO of course. i Think i was just spoiled by that wonderful saturn controller.

Survival horror had also started before the psx too, mainly on PC with the likes of alone in the dark on pc etc, but also with Clocktower on the SNES. Cracking game by the way! You could argue that it started earlier but i dont really consider them "survival horror" as opposed to just "horror".

The real point of the this big boring reply:
Sorry for big post, but i think some are missing the point that opinions are all unique. We can all share them here, discuss the finer points and have an awesome discussion. At the end of the day though, slating consoles without any rhyme or reason doesnt really accomplish anything other than rubbing people the wrong way.

@Kharnivore2099 I agree the controller wasnt perfect because after a couple of hours your hands would cramp but it was still my favorite. It also was not optimal for Street Fighter but you could always get a joystick for the system. Ive been to many of fighting game tourneys and lots of people would make their own fightsticks or use their favoirte brand of joystick/controller. Anyway I cannot argue that the saturn controller was better for fighting games but at least the Street Fighter Anniversary controller was at least an option.

Also about the Survival Horror bits. Im fully aware of games like Clock Tower, Sweet Home, Maniac Mansion and Splatter House being on older systems but lets be honest survival horror wasnt a house hold name until Resident Evil arrived. Also I was in full on troll mode so I apologize for being facetious because playing with turds is not an option.

To be honest I cant believe this thread has been so civil with only one person truly trolling. One party of fanboys usually declares a Jihad on the other by now. At the end of the day I have great memories with all of my systems but if I had to choose one it would be a PS2 for its library.

That's weird. Can you articulate on that point? Not playing with dog shit, I don't care how you do that, I mean the hate for PS2 because I think it's a fantastic system. Looking at some of the games by me I think the only genre not represented is the beat em' up... nope... there's God Hand. RTS maybe...

EDIT: Nevermind, I guess I missed all the made up BS and controversy up top there. Ah well you just keep on hatin' I'll enjoy my SMT games, Odin Sphere, Dark Cloud(s), Shadow Heart(s), God of War(s), Kingdom Hearts, Disgaea(s), Dual Hearts, Okage, Magic Pengel, Syberia, Indigo Prophecy, Fatal Frame(s)... ah who am I kidding I have a TON of PS2 games I dig and I could list them all day even though it's not my favorite console.

SNES would probably take top spot for me.
