If you wanna make vids and you think it will be fun then just do it. It doesnt really matter if everyone else has done longplays and unboxings etc, if you wanna record yourself playing, reviewing or unboxing a game then do it. ;)

It's only a waste if you do not want to do it and just want to do it because it's popular to make a YouTube channel. If you just make one for the sake of just following what everyone else is doing, it will be a waste. Do it if you love what you are doing, otherwise don't bother.

WHy would it be a waste? Do what you like, put out your thoughts and enjoy. I am not putting my stuff out there to entertain others but to display what I like.

Probably one of the best choices i made, I got a lot of friends and got better in touch with a awesome community. I probably wont ever get to a super high status but I am more than happy with my channel and I am glad I was able to meet so many people, and do something that I love.
Check out my youtube channel for everything gaming but mostly PS2 :D

If you enjoy doing it, it's not a waste of time. Just talk about things that truly interest you and people will see that passion. Whatever you end up doing, do it with all of your heart, d00d! :prinny2:

Welcome To Warp Zone!

You should do it if you enjoy doing it. Don't go into YouTube thinking you're going to be the next big channel. Just have fun and revel in the experience.

Do it because you think it'll be fun. Don't worry about the rest. Even if lots of stuff has been done before, there's only one you, so you'll always be giving your own perspective on stuff.

Like others have said, making videos is only a waste of time if you don't enjoy doing it. If it sounds like something you want to do, then go for it!

Has everything already been done? No way! Sure, there are millions of game reviews, unboxing videos, recent pickups, etc. on YouTube, but none with your unique perspective. Like John the Game Collector pointed out, you might be surprised how many people out there are eager to hear what you have to say.

It's more important now than ever to be original. So many people put on a fake gangster voice and put out terrible CoD commentaries. If you can be original, then stick with it. If not, then don't waste your time

Yes, it is a waste of time. But so is gaming. And so is reading comics. And so is watching a movie. Pretty much any hobby is a way to waste your time. So find out what makes you happy when you are wasting your time on it and waste away!

I'm not a YouTube but I believe if you want to be successful on YouTube then don't think about being popular and what not. Don't make gaining subscribers your priority, in the end it's the quality of your videos that will make you stand out. Most of the popular gaming channels today didn't start out with being internet celebrities in mind. They started doing it because it was fun and their main goal is to show what they have to those who appreciate it.

My number one criticism of the gaming channels is that they're all pretty much the same. Same format of people sitting in front of a camera and showing cases of video games. That pretty much became the generic format which is not a bad thing, but its so overdone. People are less likely to subscribe if your video look similar to a few hundred others.

I think if you want to stand out, then try something differently. I watch a lot of Tech channels, a lot of them use the same format of having a camera over a product as they review it. But there are some channels like "MattsMacintos" and "AppChat" that uses different camera techniques, watching their videos almost feel like watching commercials because they put so much attention to the flow of their camera and people love their videos. I haven't seen anyone in the gaming community do that.

It's not a waste of time but it will be hard. Pete and Johnny started out when the YouTube community is a lot smaller, so it wasn't too hard to get many subs. But now you're competing with hundreds of thousands of aspiring YouTubers. Your only ticket to a successful channel is to make yourself stand out by doing something different.

I started mine about a year and a half ago. Have to say that even though I'm struggling to get subs, it is so worth it.

I haven't read through all the responses, but I would say that it's only a waste of time if your motivations are in the wrong place. If you are doing it for fun, to connect with the community and to build a respectable channel over time, then I think it's definitely worthwhile. If you are only in it to get subscribers, get recognition from other "high profile" youtubers or other superficial reasons, then you are setting yourself up for disappointment.

You can't dance around the fact that the Youtube community has become very crowded lately, and a lot of people do the same exact thing. This is not a bad thing, mind you. I watch Youtube videos and subscribed based on personality and content, not necessarily originality, so I can enjoy 50 channels that only do pick-up videos, collection tours, etc. If I like your personality and how you present yourself on camera, you'll likely get a subscriber out of me. However, you can't feel entitled to it or expect it to happen right away. Most channels build a following over time, so you'll only get discouraged and quite early if you expect too much too soon.

In my case, I have started the Rad Rascals podcast with Andsy and we knew what we were getting into. There are a lot of podcasts out there and many are following the same format as AGG and OKS, which is perfectly fine, but it makes it harder to stand out. We were well aware of this and tempered our expectations accordingly, and we are pleased with the 50+ people who listen on a regular basis. We have such a good time doing the podcast that we would be content with half as many listeners, but the operative word here is "fun". If you are doing this for fun and are willing to overcome the "beginner's hump" with time, then you'll do fine. If you are impatient and only want recognition and subscribers, then I would say give it a pass.

Hope this helps. Whatever you decide to do, good luck :)

The amount of gaming related channels seems to have saturated the community but what really separates the channels with high and low numbers of subscribers is the style and personality of the people who uploads the videos. A person with an interesting character will separate themselves from the crowd and see to gain more viewers. But this is assuming you are planning on making a channel to have hundreds of subscribers. Look at the Yogscast (bluexephos) channel, they are terrible at games and very little knowledge on the industry as a whole in my opinion but their "lets play" videos are the most hilarious and entertaining I have seen and is probably why they have over a million people watching them now. Pete on the other hand, really knows his stuff about obscure games which is why I subscribed to him and gives some interesting and helpful reviews on games.

As long as you have fun making videos nothing else matters as the purpose should be to enjoy yourself instead of having a plan on having a ton of subscribers. Don't consider it a waste until you have tried it. you might really have fun!
