Old Game Advertisments/Posters

I've been looking through archives of old magazines like Mean Machines Sega, Amiga format and Amiga Power quite a lot recently. Other than the fantastic articles and retro game reviews the thing i enjoy looking for the most are actually the game advertisments. I think these actually bring back just as much memories and nostalgia as the games themselves. Reminds me of scouring through game magazines and promising myself, "Im gonna get that, that, that AND that!".

My younger self never quite grasped the concept of money...

Anyway, I thought it would be interesting for us to share some game advertisement posters we remember from back in the day, or ones we just stumbled across recently. Im kind of thinking pre PS2/XBOX/GC era, only because i think thier advertisments are still kind of similar to what we have now. Its also so that we can see a few big names that just arent around anymore like Ocean, Gremlin and Bullfrog etc.

Should also state if you find any peripheral ads then post them too...i love seeing the price of joysticks and joypads from 20 years ago lol. The pics may be quite big too, just so you can read the writing. ;)

Heres a few i've found...

There is a sweet site for old arcade advertisements that I love. I thought about Printing a bunch, framing them, and hanging them in my arcade.

Thats a great site man, that brings back some great memories too. That aliens flyer always made me laugh!

Its great to see comparisons between regions too, the snow bros art is just awful for the US. Im not suprised i dont see much people talking about it.

Lol.

"It's made in America by SEGA, the people that design games that can take it as well as dish it out."

Thats absolutley priceless. They should of had that slogan in the 90's. xD

I know that building. I see it almost everyday on my way to work. The Eastern Columbia building here in Los Angeles.

I love seeing the screenshots of the older titles on these flyers, back when you could get away with just taking a picture of the TV screen.

@J-R: Seeing that building everyday would make me a happy man. It gets a lot of shit but i actually love Predator 2...almost as much as the original. They could have made it more like the graphic novel but that would have needed an incredible budget at the time. So are those bird-like monuments even on the building, or was that just a mock up set to make it look a bit more dramatic? Cant see them in your pic of the Eastern Building.

@Majinpowers: Thats what i wanna see! I actually remember the NEO-GEO one for some reason though i never read playboy... :ermm:
The phallic look of the boss on the screen just cracks me up, its actually quite a "clever" poster. Love the 60's comic style of that splatterhouse flyer and the other Turbo Grafx ads...we never saw them over here in the UK so its really quite interesting to see them now. It really makes me want one, dont know why i havent bought one earlier.(Apart from the price, cost of P&P and what it'll cost me to get a decent library!)

Now the Gabriel Knight poster...that brings back a lot of memories. That game is so damn awesome. I was speaking to my oldest friend the other day, he was the one i used to play all the old school PC games with. We sadly went seperate ways as we got older, but we had a long long talk online about the games we used to play as kids. Among the many titles was Gabriel Knight and he was dying to play it again, but he never knew there were working versions on sites like GOG.com. After he played it we both agreed that this is an absolutely stellar title and it holds all the charm and atmosphere it did when it was first released. Sierra had some balls to have a man hanging from the gallows on thier flyer and it really pays off.

Sorry went on a bit of a tangent there, but its the past generations section...we're here to share good memories of forgotten times.

Heres an old Master system ad i remember. Notice the dad and son both with a controller playing Hang on...i'll have to try that!
Its not suprising really that some people didnt take to the master system with awful ads like these. :(

Heres another by sega not long after the Super Nintendo was released. A blatant direct attack on Nintendo that you really have to give them credit for...that took a lot of balls. Though they only actually show 97 game pics... 2 of which were sonic 1.

Back when sega could seemingly do no wrong, they brought out these sega truck ads. Im sure there were commercials on TV too. The units he has for his stereo look like arcade cabs, he has a friend that looks like Data from the goonies and he has a chair that makes him look like he's getting a gynecology exam from his Megadrive. Whats not to love?!

Sega's ads were always either really clever, really weird, or just plain lame. I do think Sega was one of the best video games companies to come up with cool marketing ideas and catchphrases sometimes I think they were just to high on some of the lame ones.

I remember there was a Cosmic Fantasy 2 writeup in the Feb 1992 issue of EGM that made me want that game so bad I couldn't stand it. (I wanted it so bad that I still remember what magazine it was in.) Was the issue that had Ken from Street Fighter 2 on the cover!!!!!!!!!!!!

Yeah, that would have had me salivating too. Again i love the screenshots, you could never get away with those anymore. :(

The "cinema" shots are just incredible too, say what you want about the cd format and the loading times...sometimes it was totally worth it.

They were just props. They don't exist on the actual building.

Man. Forget everything else--I love the hair cuts in these ads.

Here's a good one (save for the lack of epic '80s hairstyles):

Yeah, the images were showing for me not not today however... :-/ Just had to re-link mine, very odd.

Its true though, i did get old waiting for someone to top Sega CD/Mega CD. :(

Still looking for a Saturn copy of this at a reasonable price, not the best adventure ever but interesting none the less. It's actually pretty brutal in difficulty given it was released in the mid 90's.
Didn't realise Vic Tokai did the Sega port either, i love that company more everyday it seems.
