http://www.forbes.com/sites/terokuittinen/2011/12/29/sony-in-big-trouble-with-ps-vita/?feed=rss_europe In the Vita's first week in Japan, it sold 320k units. In its second week, it dropped down to selling only 72k units. Hmmm, Sony might have to do something big for the US launch, because so far, the Japan launch has not been doing well at all. |

Yeah it's interesting to see the response to the launch so far. The 3DS didn't seem to do very well at the beginning either. Sony will have to restructure something and quick if they want to turn this around. Having just been in Tokyo last week, it certainly wasn't due to lack of marketing as there were tons of ads all over the place. Plus the system was front and center at most of the shops I visited. On a side note, I love the Vita packaging as the cases are really small and thin. I love the blue that they chose to use for the case. It looks great. |

That is true, the 3DS declined as well from week one to week two. However, the Vita dropped down a lot worse then the 3DS. 3DS went from 370k - 210k in its first two weeks. Vita has gone down from 320k to 72k, a lot worse then the 3DS. The Vita has just been released in Japan, so it is a bit early to jump to conclusions. However, is Sony wants to keep this thing alive, they gotta do something. Perhaps the Japanese market is holding off on the Vita, since the Wii U is being released in 2012. |

Just on a side note, perhaps Pete will want to put up the Sony Vita forum sometime, as it is getting closer to the US launch. |

I think the fact that Nintendo dropped some big 3DS games really hurt the Vita as well as the high price tag. There were a lot of people still playing PSPs on the subways, but I started to see just as many playing the 3DS. Sony needs to get a few killer games into that machine before it will move units. Over time, it will pick up steam and probably match up with the 3DS better. Mario Kart 7, Super Mario Land 3D and the new Monster Hunter game will have definitely helped the 3DS control the market for the holiday season. |

Don't see that big of an issue with the sales. Honestly, the systems initial line up is pretty damn weak and the sales are reflecting it. Not only that, but I think with the release of Mario Kart 7, Monster Hunter Tri-G and other more desirable games, many people seemingly don't have the money to buy a Vita right now or don't want one quite yet. Something to also keep in mind is that sales in Japan usually drop precipitously in week two unless it is something insanely popular. Wait until there are more games that pique the Japanese audience, then, you'll see it sell more:D |

There is no way I am going to drop $40~$50 bucks on a portable game in 2012. I know people hate to hear it, but that same $40 would buy me 20 games in the app store! Are they the same quality as Uncharted? Nope, probably not... But I still get a hell of a lot of enjoyment from app store games, and Sony has yet to convince me I need to carry another device with me. |

Good! The Vita looks absolutely terrible. The fast Sony and M$ get out of this business the better. |

How does it look absolutely terrible? ![]() Im not a fan of sony at all really, but i think the vita looks pretty sweet. It has everything you need to play most types of games and i think the size of the screen is incredible. Sure there isnt a second screen like on the DS, or "3D" games like on the 3DS, but if sony change thier business model a bit and i see some decent titles coming out i reckon i'll probably get one. I personally cant get behind iPhones and the iTunes app store. I think a lot of the titles and ports from older consoles are just awful to play. Gunstar heroes, Rick dangerous, Flashback and any other game where you need quick reflexes are just awful on a touchscreen. Now if they just added some buttons, a D-pad and made iTunes something i'd actually like to interact with then i may change my mind. (Though i will say that shining force on iphone was a joy to play )

I think the system looks pretty neat, and, even though I haven't paid enough attention to it to get excited over any of it's launch titles, I'll most likely pick it up at launch (Wi-fi version, no 3G for me). I'm going to go the same route I went with the 3DS and keep my library small, not buying a new game until I've completed most of the previous. I'm kind of wondering what the PSV's production costs are.... |

I'm really not digging the Vita at the moment. Right now Sony just seems to be hyping it a bit too much and promising features that it will probably not work all that well. One such feature being the streaming of PS3 games to your Vita. Even OnLive (whatever that game streaming console is called I forget lol) has delay/lag issues and its a box pretty much dedicated to that purpose. If the PSP's streaming of PS1 games is any indication of what's to come, it doesn't particularly inspire confidence. The back touchscreen is another thing that confuses me. Why was this really needed? I understand that they probably added it so it wouldn't look like they just upgraded the PSP but it doesn't really seem necessary... Or practical... I haven't tried this feature out yet myself so I can't pass judgement on it quite yet, but I can't help being pessimistic here. Back at TGS, Sony promised how they had 100 games in development already for the Vita. Where I'm glad they learned from there mistakes from the PSP (Not having any games, another thing the Vita has going against it for me) I noticed that these were just words and numbers they were throwing around. It was in Japanese, and not knowing Japanese myself, I had to find translations about the web. Even then all these titles just sounded like shovelware. Sure there will probably be 1 or 2 sleeper hits out of that list of shovelware, but when the conference is more about them telling you how many games they have and less about games... And as it was mentioned above, the prices for handheld games are getting way too high. There's no way I want to pay nearly as much for a handheld game as I would for a console game. I know their prices are all over the place with them having digital downloads and varying prices. I don't particularly like being so pessimistic, but I can't really help it I suppose. Much of Sony's bad business decisions in the past have effected me directly, so now all I see is another potential mistake. The Vita is definitely something that's a late life cycle buy for me, if at all, at this point. I still don't understand why Sony doesn't make it to where you can play Vita games through your PS3/Future PS4 on your TV with a PS3 controller when you're at home. That always irritated me about handhelds. When I'm at home relaxing, I don't particularly want to be all hunched over a PSP squinting at a 6 inch screen when my TV, which I payed good money for, sits untouched. If they announced that this was a feature, I must have missed it, but you'd think this'd be a no-brainer to a company trying to interlink their handhelds with their consoles. I think the system itself looks amazing and the tech involved is tantalizing. However, Sony needs to make up it's mind about the handheld market. It's been one confusingly stupid move after another. Nevermind, that Sony definitely doesn't have a stellar record when it comes to supporting ANY hardware they come out with. Or supporting that hardware with software at launch. PS2 HDD anyone? PSP period? Are you kidding me? Save your money unless you like spending it on bobbles that are shiny and have some interesting features, but won't be viable for very long. Every company makes missteps, I just think that Sony hasn't made a strong enough case that this particular bobble will supported by many developers or that it won't be phased out in 2 years altogether. My 2 cents, not trying to get anyone pissed, just really dislike Sony and I used to be a Sony guy for years. So my opinion is going to be biased. Edited by Soulless, Feb 10 2012, 11:44 AM.

The lackluster sales are not that big of a surprise, to be honest, since iOS games have exploded in popularity and it's hard for people to justify spending $30 to $50 for a portable game. The top-shelf titles will definitely sell well, so I wouldn't consider the 3DS or the Vita to be failures, but I think competition from iOS has diminished the appeal of buying a gaming handheld. My other reason for not jumping on board is the fact that I am only interested in the gaming. The cameras and browsing interface are pretty weak from the reviews I've seen, plus I have a nice Android phone that serves these needs perfectly. The remote play is a nice feature, but I question how well it would work and how often it will crash. At the end of the day, $250 (plus the extra expense of having to buy a memory card) for something I am only going to use for playing games is a bit steep. When it goes down to $150, I will probably jump on board. |

Agreed! 250 plus is just way too much for me right now. I also want to see what games are going to come out besides the ones they already have showed. I need more than Uncharted and Modnation racers... |
