I've heard about the Xbox 360 being the new showcase at E3 this year but I have read other blogs and comments saying that actually the ps4 will be released until 2015 also I think I read from maximum PC at least i think...

Don't have much to go on at this point, but I might consider being an early adopter for the upcoming console generation. Haven't bought a system on launch day since the Dreamcast! :dc:

It's too early to tell at this point, but my guess is that the new consoles will probably get announced at this E3 or the next one, but will not come out until late 2013 at the earliest. Either way, the Wii U will have at least a one year jump on the competition. The reason I am skeptical about a new Xbox or Playstation at this point is that the current ones continue to sell very well, and the announcement of a new one will likely cause a decline in unit sales. I just don't see it happening for the next two years, but that's just speculation on my part.

Personally I'm not too excited, in my eyes the consoles are just coming more like PC's but they're still so far away that it feels pointless.

I think that the Ps3 should be able to compete with Wii U and the next generation Xbox for 2-3 years assuming that it keeps getting games.

Ps3 hasn't even been explored in this generation that much. Just look at Killzone 3 or Uncharted 3. Now compare the graphics to the multi platform ps3 games and the games on xbox 360. My point being that the console has a lot more to offer than it has yet been able to.

The way I feel now I'm probably going to stay with this generation of consoles for maybe even 5years regardless of when they come out.

Anyway I'm a cheap ass at heart so I wouldn't even buy any games on a new console.

This article was written in early January.

Since then, Sony and Microsoft have explicitly stated that 8th generation PlayStation and Xbox consoles won't be announced at E3 2012.

Based on that, we can expect they may be announced no earlier than E3 2013, and launched no earlier than late 2013, effectively TWO YEARS from now.

Sony still sees many millions of PS3 units still to be sold and has their resources tied up in making the Vita an even VIABLE platform before year end, so theres no reason for them to distract from Vita with a PS4.

Microsoft on the other hand, sees Kinect as a new platform, and if they can triple the current lifetime sales of Kinect, they'll have literally sold more Kinect units than N64s or GameCubes in those respective generations.

Only Nintendo is in real need to launch a new system right now.

Hopefully stronger hardware will awaken the creative juices and bring about some interesting games and not just an improved first person shooter.

Yeah SuperTrainStation H is right

Sony wants the ps3 to run for a 10 year run so there is a few years left.

LoL, lets hope they can develop a console that will last that long though.

Surely these current gen consoles are gonna be waaaay out of date by the time they bring out a new console, im all for them getting the most out of a machine but a 10yr cycle? Seems a little bold dont you think?

Sony's always been good with keeping their consoles alive. I mean honestly, the PS3 was out and people were still buying games for PS2 until it's dying day. I can see Sony doing the same with PS3.

In comparison to PC's these consoles have been out of date from the start. I have yet to see major reasons why Ps3 wouldn't be able to compete with the Wii U anyway. I don't find it impossible at all that the next Playstation would take +3years to come. In my eyes all they need are for their exclusives to sell better.

I personally don't think sony and microsoft are ready to announce a new console. Just because nintendo are announcing, doesn't mean they should. I can't see how sony or microsoft can top their current consoles. Graphics can only go so far and they've pretty much put every single feature that's nice and necessary. What could they add next? The new Xbox could cook our meals? The new ps4 could massage our backs? They shouldn't even be announced until E3 2015 or 2016.
