There may be several threads like this but Im curious about which games that changed your life if any.
I know games in general played a big part in all of our lives but was there any games that changed your life?

I gotta say Oblivion, its what really got me into gaming, specifically RPG gaming and I now collect RPGs (along with other games of course) because of it! Its why I'm even on this forum haha I wouldn't be into games otherwise

I'll put down 3 different games. The first is FFVII. Before VII I had never played an rpg before so considering how much of a big fan I am now, this one is one of the most important games I have ever played.

The second is Day of Defeat.... I use to be DAMN GOOD at this game. Dominated league play and had to actually buy 3 steam accounts because I was banned from every other major server due to "hacking." My skills didn't happen over night.... I had to put in thousands of hours of play time. All those hours started cutting in to my school work and I almost failed 7th, 8th, and 9th grade due to poor grades. School would let out at 4 and I was on my PC by 4:15 until usually midnight or 1 AM.

The last of these games was Counter-Strike. For those who played as much as I did back in the day you would agree that growing up through CS molded my young mind. The demented way I think now is totally due to me growing up online with other crazy players.

I'm gonna sound like a broken record, but if I had to choose just one game that changed my life, it would undoubtly be The Elder Scrolls: Arena, sure I had an NES and a Game Boy before Arena, but I wasn't that big of a gamer. I played Mario and Zelda, but in all honesty at that time gaming didn't mean that much to me, then I played TES: Arena, that game started my gaming hobby, it's what got me into WRPGs and completely changed my interests.

That is also the reason why The Elder Scrolls and Bethesda hold such a special place in my heart. Even now, 16 years later, I still love it just as much as then, even more. And i'll take that love with me to the grave.

Final Fantasy XI. MMO's existed before this, but it's the first one I played. It had the appeal of the FF universe and the idea of getting my friends together online to play/struggle for many many hours was awesome. I haven't had a similar experience with a community of gamers since this game.

I'm going to have to say Fallout 3. Sun up till sun down I was on that game taking minor breaks for food bathroom and talking with my family (lived at home at the time). I loved this game so much, I kept making characters just to play through the game again. Once I bought the expansion packs, it was all over. Old characters got played again. It's pretty much the only newer game I'd keep playing. Only thing preventing me from playing is my computer. After my Xbox died, I bought the PC version that I played on my friend's computer until it "blew up". I got a new computer now I just need to get a good graphics card and a few GBs of RAM.

A game that really changed my life has got to be Spyro: Riptos Rage for the ps1. This was one of the first games I ever played on any console. This game was so fun to play, including all the firebreathing, all the gliding thats required to cross short distances, ramming into enemies like a mad bull, and you can't forget about the flying. In Spyro Riptos Rage you have new abilities like swimming, ice skating, and spit objects from Spyro's mouth. This game plays almost identical to the first one but that's a good thing, considering how awesome Spyro games are. This game gets quite addicting because in each lvl there are several mini games that are incredibly to play. Spyro Riptos Rage is fun from the beginning all the way to the boss battle. I think I was 9 or 10 when I tried to beat this final boss. But now that I'm 15 it's not that bad, it just takes some practice. Check this game out if you have not already, its incredibly inexpensive. These aren't the droids we're looking for.

Two games that influenced me the most would have to be Chrono Cross for the original PlayStation and The Legend of Zelda: Majora's Mask for the Nintendo 64. I put an ungodly amount of time into these two games as a child, and they affected me profoundly, especially my taste in music (Cross) and how I view the world around me (Majora's Mask). They're both probably why I have such a dark personality.

Sega Does What Nintendon't

I dont know about life changing but there have been 2 games that have captured me like no others have..... Final Fantasy 2 (FFIV Jap) and Lunar The Silver Star.

Final Fantasy 2 was the game that made me like RPG's more so than any other genre. I had played RPG's like Dragon Warrior and even Final Fantasy on the NES but FF2 was unlike anything that had came before it. It had a epic story and graphics was top notch at the time for a RPG! Still to this day this is my all time favorite game and I have played through this more times than I care to admit!

Lunar The Silver Star The story is so well told you will be come attached to the characters in such as way its hard to enplane unless you have played this masterpiece. Just hearing the opening to this game sends chills down my spine!

If you have never played either of these games I highly recommend them as there 2 of the very best RPG's ever made.

FFX. Turned me into the gamer I am today. Got me heavily into RPGs which lead me to multiple games and genre types.

The graphics drew me in and everything else is what really ended up stunning me.

The original Legend of Zelda as it is the very first game I can remember playing and it got me into gaming. Also, Megaman 2. I just have found memories of playing this as a young child and loving every minute of it. I can remember writing down passwords and sitting real close to my small red TV trying to beat the game and find out all the bosses weaknesses.

Sonic the Hedgehog, because it was the first video game I ever played and is responsible for getting me into gaming. I vividly remember the Christmas I got my Mega Drive, when I was 6, and I've been into gaming ever since. Hard to forget something like that :D

Other than that I'd say Fallout 3. It came out during one of the hardest times of my life, I was in a really awful place, and that game honestly kept me going. The wasteland became somewhere for me to escape to for a little while. It got me through.

The Legend of Zelda: Ocarina of Time changed my life gaming wise. Before that, I never really liked games. I had a Genesis and a handful of games my parents bought but I never really enjoyed them near the level I did OoT. I think OoT was the first game that actually made me consider gaming as a hobby.

Pokemon Blue, however, did change my life. I was in... Gosh, 2nd grade when the games came out. I remember buying Blue and playing it on the 13 hour drive to my grandfather's up north with the little magnifying glass/light accessory so I could play in the dark of night. I remember I played Platinum version the last time we drove up there to see him when he was in the hospital with lung cancer. A bit nostalgic... But back to how it changed my life, Pokemon really became a cultural phenom for my generation. I made a lot of my friends I still have today from the little colored gameboy cartridge/cards/tv show. Speaking of cards, Pokemon is probably what turned me into the collector I am today, games or otherwise.

Only other game I can think of really might not even be considered a game as its a visual novel but... Katawa Shoujo man... Dem feels... It changed my life in ways I don't know I'm quite comfortable even mentioning.

I know what you mean about Pokemon. I dunno if it turned me into a collector or if it just catered to the collector that was already inside of me, but Red/Blue/Yellow were close to perfect for me. So damned nostalgic....

Ds Games!

The original Legend of Zelda was a game I would stay up with my dad and play, and he didn't care much for video games, just happened to like that one a lot, so have memories of doing that as a kid. As far as changing my gaming life, Chrono Trigger was the first real rpg I ever played and didn't even know what the genre was before I gave that game a chance.

Thats really cool that you have a like a family memory with it.
Me and my dad played Red alert and and Command and Conquer even though he wasn't much of a gamer.

Ashly Burch has a pretty cool web page about this very topic.

http://www.gamessavedmylife.com/

Videogames helped me bond with my mom and brother a lot when I was young, it was one of the few things we had going through some rough patches too. I guess my nostalgia glasses have an extra little filter on it when I remember games I played with my family.

Got to be Final Fantasy VIII for me. I had never really played an RPG at the time and I remember watching the opening scene and not really getting it. I wasn't used to a game that didn't just drop you in the middle of the action and I actually switched the machine off after an hour and didn't play it again for a few days. Anyway I thought I'd best give it another go and got to the dance scene and wow, I had never seen anything like it before, the music and whole feeling that scene gave was something I hadn't experienced in a game before. From that point on I poured hours of what should have been homework time into it everyday and never looked back.

Needless to say that got me onto the other Final Fantasy games and ultimately RPGs!

(And first post so hey guys!)

Wizardry I on the Apple IIe. I used to play it a lot with my dad as a kid. We'd break out the grid paper, and set out into the dungeon with us alternating between one of us navigating the party at the computer, and the other as the cartographer, mapping out where we were going. When a battle came up, we'd discuss how we wanted to go about it. I remember being so happy when my mage could finally cast Tiltowait. :p Ever since then, RPGs have been my go-to genre, even though I don't have nearly as much time for them as I used to.
