When I get my upgrades for my computer, I plan on getting the program Blender. It is a free open source program to create 3D scenes, images, animations, character, etc. It's obvious I have a fascination for gaming graphics (especially today's modern graphics) but added in with my fascination for PIXAR movies and other related animation film types, I've always wanted to learn how to make 3D objects. Anybody else do anything related to this or at least tried it out?

I have an education in 3D modelling and animation (Though i've never really done much animation, mainly modelling) :P I've never used Blender though, I use 3Ds Max, Maya, ZBrush, MudBox and Houdini. I highly recommend 3Ds Max, absolutely the best 3D program to date, it has got so many features it's insane, on top of that Autodesk has included some pretty neat tutorials with the program that'll get you started. If I remember correctly you can get a months trial on Autodesks website. Besides having some really awesome standard features, there's also a whole heap of great mods for it, a good example is Vray, bar none one of the best pieces of rendering software (Besides Pixars inhouse render software :D).

Also a good place to start out, especially with 3Ds Max, is 3dtotal.com, they've got some great tutorials on there aswell as a lot of beginners and professional users to help you out. If you choose to use 3Ds Max, i'd also recommend the book 3Ds Max Modelling for Games by Andrew Gahan and art designer who has worked on the WRC series aswell as Motorstorm 1 & 2, that book will teach you the basics of modelling for games and has a very good tutorial on normal mapping.
