These aren't the droids we're looking for.

Believe it or not, until a few months ago, I had never played a Final Fantasy game. I picked up the PSP versions of the original Final Fantasy and Final Fantasy II either last year or the year before, but only played about 20 minutes of Final Fantasy before losing interest. So, I decided to put an end to this nonsense and get this series under my belt. I started a new game yesterday (naming my characters after Twitter friends (two of which are Andsy (RIP, Mr. Epic) and our own browland1)) and I have to say I'm really enjoying it. I dunno what happened last year: perhaps I just wasn't in the right mindset for it, or I was just completely lost.

I've decided that this month I'm going to work through as many of the main series titles as I can. At the moment I own:

Final Fantasy (PSP)
Final Fantasy II (PSP)
Final Fantasy III (DS)

I also just ordered Final Fantasy IV: The Complete Collection for the PSP. I'm assuming after IV I'll move onto the Game Boy Advance version of Final Fantasy V, since I've read that it's supposed to be superior to the Anthology version for the original PlayStation. True? Same for VI? Besides the confusingly horrid amounts of remakes, I've read that the series is plagued by misnumbering and whatnot, though I'm assuming that just applies to the original releases and not the remakes. Please, oh, please tell me this is true.

I'm a Final Fantasy noob, so I really need advice on V and VI. I know they're available via the Virtual Console and PSN and whatnot, but I really prefer physical copies. I think I can figure everything out on my own when I get to VII xD

Any help would be much appreciated, and I'll keep you updated on my progress!

This is also having the wonderful side effect of finally giving my PSP some much needed love!

My current Final Fantasy team (posting mainly to show off the names ;P):

Sega Does What Nintendon't

Myself I still think you cant beat the SNES versions of FF2 (FFIV) and FF3 (FFVI) but they can be expensive if you want them complete.

The PS1 collections is the way to go for price. The only negative thing about them is they have a slight loading time when you first start up the game and when you save. You can get all of the Final Fantasy games I-IX except part III (NES) on the PS1.

The NES Final Fantasy III is only available in English on the DS so that's really your only option on that one.
The Final Fantasy IV (FF2 USA) remake on the DS is kick ass as well!

I got the GBA versions of the games as well and there great ports too but some of them like Final Fantasy VI has shot up in price like crazy.

Cant comment on the PSP ports because I dont have a PSP.

Don't forget you can also grab the PS1 ports of Final Fantasy at the PSN store for PSP/PS3. I can understand if you'd want the CDs and Artwork, but if you don't care and don't mind spending 6-10 bucks for each game, this is also a way to go as well ;)

Thanks for the replies! Money really isn't a problem, so I'm taking everything into consideration xD The Final Fantasy series is confusing to an outsider like me, what with the remakes and the different localizations, not to mention the titles that were released here as one number when they were actually a different number in Japan, and then were rereleased here as their original number, LMAO.

Eric, you named the thief after me! You really know the way to my <3

Have fun with these games. I haven't played the first Final Fantasy since back in the day on the NES, but I hope to one day reacquire them and play through them for old time's sake :)

I recently just completed FF IV on PSP, Still have to do the interlude and the after years though. I just picked up 1&2 on the PSP too though, hopefully once i crack through Breath of Fire 3 i'll get stuck into them.

I've been shunning J-rpg's for a few years now and have suddenly felt the urge to get back into them, I think playing them on portable platforms really makes it easier for me. I always seem to loose interest if im in front of a TV doing the usual turn based battle grinding. :(

This is the first I'm hearing this. Is it true? If it is, I'll pick up V for the GBA as well. I would love to play that game again.

Due to time mismanagement (story of my life), I just now beat Final Fantasy. Andy, Ben, Lori, and Eric were all level 60 (after getting our asses stomped by the final boss at level 53, haha). Stupid me didn't bother learning a few spells that would have made him easier to beat, so I pretty much went the hit and heal approach xD Now that that's under my belt, I'll be moving on to Final Fantasy II!

Since I'm so far behind, I'm extending this through March, just to make it somewhat more reasonable and all the more embarrassing when I utterly fail xD

Agreed! The PS1 ports of these games are actually pretty sub-par emulations of the originals. If you've never played them on the SNES, you probably won't notice that the translations aren't 100% or that the music isn't at "full" as the source matieral...but the load times will annoy newcomers and veterans alike.

Choose wisely, and good luck!

I meant to undertake this exact same quest over a year ago. I started Final Fantasy I on the NES and got sidetracked around the point where you go to the Cardia Islands to get the Class Upgrades[where you characters get buff on steroids/grow up ;)] by presenting the Rat's Tail to that Dragon.

But you have inspired me sir! I am going to pick up where I left off.....which I think was heading to the Gurgu Volcano for the Fire Orb aka Orb #2.

Then when I beat the game I too shall move on to Final Fantasy II (JP) on PS1.....which I have yet to ever play.

Don't think I will be able to beat every FF game in 2 months like you are striving for....but If I can beat 1-2 per month I will be happy with that.

I dunno if I'll be able to beat all of them in 2 months, but I'm sure as hell gonna try! :P If I don't have them all beaten by the end of March, I'll just extend the deadline by another month xD

Glad I've inspired someone! I'm just now starting Final Fantasy II and it almost feels like a different game; much more fleshed out and polished feeling (so far). Really enjoying it. I'm still not quite looking forward to when I get to Final Fantasy X though. I dunno what it is with these modern FF games, they just seem overly stylized to me. Hopefully I'm completely wrong and whatnot, haha.

Can't wait to hear your thoughts on FF XII. It seems to be a pretty polarizing game. I, for one, loved it.

Heck, for that matter, I wouldn't mind hearing your thoughts on the rest of the series. Do you promise to report in on your progress every now and then?

What on earth are you going to do when you hit FF XI and XIV? You can't exactly finish an MMO (that's the whole point). No worries, though. I'll give you a formal reprieve on those two. :D

Lmao, yeah, I'll be skipping the MMO's; I already have an MMO in my life <3

I'll definitely be keeping this thread updated as I progress, and I'm thinking about writing a short review for each game I finish!

Rock on! I look forward to the updates.

I kicked the MMO habit about 5 years ago. I'm still catching up on the games I missed during that dark time. :D

I Like Games.

I hope you can hang in there to experience FF9, thats where the series was at it's highest point and from there it moved in many different directions that dont hit home with everyone. For me X was downhill, X-2 is my least played FF game so I cant judge it, XI was well....personally you all know my stance on that I loved it, XII was a huge change for the series and IMO is one of the most satisfying battle systems ever on a single player RPG, XIII was a highpoint in terms of story, characters, graphics, and battle system but disappointing in all other aspects, and XIII-2 is....I still dont know, lol.
