Duke Nukem Forever; Why all the hate?

So, now that I'm replaying good ol' DNF, and doing my first Youtube Walkthrough on it HERE, I realized that it is one of my favourite games of last year, maybe even the generation. I think it did exactly what it was supposed to do, be a Duke game. No fancy graphics, no big story, just Duke cracking jokes and blowing up aliens, isn't that what we wanted from DNF? I guess it's true, you truly had to be a Duke fan to enjoy this game.

Edit: Mulitplayer is pretty bad, but, that shouldn't be the deciding factor for the game, you know?

These aren't the droids we're looking for.

I enjoyed what little I played of it. I've never played a Duke Nukem game before (I'll get into the older games, though), so this was my first meeting with Duke. It's a dumb, violent game, and I love it for being that way. Definitely worth the $10 I paid for it. It's still sitting in my 360 waiting for me to get back to it.

I enjoyed the game solely because of it's unorthodox style and not taking itself seriously. I bought it at a time when I was stressed out a lot so it was really nice to be able to punch aliens in the balls while trying to save all the "earth" babes. I paid like 20 something bucks for it and wasn't disappointed because I knew what to expect. If you want a game that will not immerse you in it's story/gameplay/ anything but will be good for a few laughs and dicking around this is perfect.

But the game does have it's faults aside from the intended silly ones, it took a ridiculously long time to develop , the controls are relatively stiff, the online is atrocious and the story lacks enough effort to keep your attention.

To summarize; if you payed 60 dollars and were waiting 10 years I feel bad for you. If you payed 10 dollars and are looking to blow off steam then this is perfect.

dont get me started.... i played duke3d for pc back in '96, true old-school, not that silly n64 watered down version. im ranked 58 on the multi player leaderboards and 25 on single player on xbox live.

first of all, the levels in duke4 are so linear and boring they might as well just be a straight hallway. there's no secrets like in duke3d, so there's no point to exploring. the loading times are horrendous, and it has to load frequently and every time you die. there's no health pickups, no atomic health, no armor. its so dumbed down with the auto recharging health. and there's always ammo crates with infinite ammo available so there's nothing to collect or search for in the levels, you just change a weapon once in a while, its very mindless. i couldnt finish it, its to boring, i got to the alien underground level. i still play multiplayer though, but the movement is VERY slow compared to duke3d which makes it very hard to avoid rockets. i understand they had to dumb it down for the mainstream audience because if you play duke3d on multiplayer there's people that are so good that i can't even kill them once the whole match because there's so much more dimension to the gameplay in duke3d. theres so many tricks, glitches and warps to learn.

but back to duke4, the levels are mostly scripted events which is boring to me, i like the quick, short sandbox levels in duke3d where the levels weren't broken up by loading times and you were free to roam around and interact with the environment, look for secrets, collect ammo, weapons, armor. but gearbox played it safe and made it like every other halo-ish rip-off.

hopefully they'll fix these problems with duke 3d: reloaded, it has its own podcast!

^ This.

I like you played the good 'ol Duke 3D, and loved it to death. And I was looking forward to DNF like a little kid, even preordered the Balls of Steel Edition, and when I finally played it I don't think i've ever been that disappointed, it was NOTHING like what they promised, and I could not believe that it took so long to make such a heaping pile of shit.

The worst thing is, now when anyone mentions Duke Nukem, my mind immediately defaults to the nightmarish memories of DNF, not the good memories of playing Duke Nukem 3D aswell as the first 2D platformers. So no, I really do think that there is solid grounds for hating DNF, it took a beloved franchise and a beloved character and ripped it apart.

See, I disagree, I really enjoyed the Ego bar, it fits Duke Character well, Duke was, well himself, there was no changing of his character, they still had all the witty puns, the Tie ins to other games, and of course, the pixelated breasts we all love. As for the multiplayer, I never played Duke 3D, or any Duke game for multiplayer, no one should.

multiplayer is just 25% of a game. it's like a band. the lead singer or guitar player doesn't have to carry the whole band (some cases this is true though :P ) they all have to work together to be great.

I'm sorry but I have to agree with Eqwanox. I started playing a shareware version of Duke Nukem about 20 years ago. My memories of that platformer and then the subsequent Wolfenstein one-off were what made me want to play the new one. I didn't buy it, thankfully, and I'm glad. If it was exactly as it is, with a different title, I doubt that anyone would've played it. Linearity, slow-pacing, slow-movement, unimaginative boss fights couldn't make up for the one-liners and the few things that I actually did like about the game. I'm an achievement hunter and the thought of slogging through more of that game to get more wasn't enough, and sometimes that's all I need sadly. Duke isn't dead, but he's not feeling too well. I hope someone does a XBL or PSS offering for 15 bucks. It wouldn't be hard to do a better job than that POS we all waited 10 years for.

I see it like this, you wait for anything for ten years, it's probably going to suck, but, if you didn't wait that long for it, you probably enjoyed it.

Agreed. I wasn't waiting with fingers crossed that the game was going to be good. TBH, I had very low expectations for it simply because of the long development cycle, etc. Even those expectations weren't met. I guess what disappointed me the most was to see another game that I liked a lot as a kid not given the care I felt it deserved.

i dont think they were working on it for the whole 15 years, they had to keep remaking it for newer systems and it was also on hold here and there then gearbox bought the ip and made their own version of it making it into a halo/cod clone for the masses. the other option they SHOULD have done would be to drop all the scripted events, go back to short quick sandbox levels in fun locations with keycards. remember movie set? KTIT radio station? the porn store? the submarine? yea, FUN levels, and they're short so it keeps things moving. and the ability to collect ALL weapons, ammo, health, armor, and so on. but they would probly have to downgrade the graphics a bit to do this cause duke4 only had a handful of locations.

but what im describing is a 20$ downloadable game, and they could probly make more money with the 60$ retail release because it has better graphics.... which means its a better game. fail.

I wouldn't have minded a download xbox arcade/psn/steam duke game. I know the other masses of gamers wouldn't have noticed the game and would have ignored it for other big titles, but I know for damn sure the hardcore duke fans would download day one.

You mentioned downgrading the graphics? Well if they're at least polished and clean I (personally myself) wouldn't mind. I could care less to see extreme detail in a duke game (or any game for that matter. borderlands is a great example).

I didn't mind how bad the graphics were, I was just happy to see Duke back in action, and if you think about it, think of how varied the levels were, you went from a hotel, to a construction site, to inside an alien hive, to Duke Burger, to the Wild West, ETC. That was one aspect I really enjoyed.

people keep saying the graphics were bad in duke4, i thought they were good. i was just saying IF they made a true duke sequel they would have to downgrade the graphics for shorter, less frequent loading times and to free up some production time to make more variety in levels because there was only like 6 or 7 levels.

hey greyslash, you have doom on xbox? they brought it back, its only 5$ so i got, but its such a crummy port! you cant even see your score during a match, and it doesnt even notify you when you kill someone, and you can only have up to 4 person deathmatches, duke3d allows 8.

Yeah, I picked up DOOM when it was first released on XBLA, DOOM 2 as well, I never tried out the multi, I love DOOM for its fast paced single player, and I think it was an alright port. The Duke 3D one was nice too.
