I've been considering getting into scratch lotto tickets because I need money. Though that last statement may end up contradicting itself since you probably lose more money than you make, but I keep hearing stories of people winning thousands of dollars. I saw a YouTube video of a woman who won $50,000 from a scratch lotto tickets and I thought to myself "that could be me". But then I saw a post on Yahoo Answers where this guy said he was over his 30's and has been scratching tickets since he was 18. There was also one time where my manager spent the whole day buying lotto tickets. I think he spent like $60 on them and only one out of like 30 got him a free ticket. But at the same time he seemed really optimistic. My co-worker said that you can't win if aren't even trying, and I figure that's sort of logical.

So I'm thinking maybe I'll be lucky enough and get some cash out of it. So I'm just wondering if anyone here scratches lotto tickets.

I used to but I tended to have terrible luck with them. My grandma on the other hand, seems to do pretty well, breaking even or winning money more often than most people, and she sticks to the 1-5 dollar ones. I wouldn't suggest it as a method of winning money though.

I love em' but really, for money, no way. I've bought them for a long time now because I think they're fun (I usually get the bingo or crosswords ones, they remind me of those scratch off Zelda game/cards lol). I don't win that often and when I do it's usually $10 or under. That's not to say I haven't been lucky, I've had a few over a hundred (and my brother in-law got $1000 from one) but the odds are against you. If you want to play them do it when you have excess money not when you're short on it.

Personally, my luck with lottery tickets is pretty low. I have been playing on-and-off for years and have never won more than $25. If I do win, it's either a small prize of $3 to $10 on a scratch ticket or a free play if I'm doing the provincial lottery. Mind you, I never expect anything more - winning is completely a fluke.

As for doing it for money, the rule I follow with lotteries, as well as any kind of gambling, is that I never gamble what I cannot afford to lose. People do win big sometimes, but the odds of this happening are very small, so I wouldn't do it if I was already hurting for money. If you can afford to drop a few bucks and are okay with losing it, then look at it as a fun little side-hobby, but don't expect a payout. However, your co-worker is right - the only way to be guaranteed a loss is if you don't play, but I wouldn't stretch that logic to justify gambling if I couldn't afford it.

If it's going to be a way to make money then that would be a bad Idea; For fun go for it. Scratch tickets and Loto in general is something I always buy when I have some change laying around. Good way to get rid of change when you have lots of it, unless you have an arcade you can go too. Well in my opinion anyway.

FYP.

Don't go into ANY gambling venture expecting to make money, that's a dangerous expectation that will cost you.

for the same price as a decent scratch lotto ticket (3-20 dollars) you can literally buy silver coins and actually have a reasonable low cost investment on your hands

i'm talking mainly pre-1964 Dollars, Dimes, and Quarters

basically they're guaranteed to at least be spendable at their face value even if silver were to somehow totally bottom out.

i brought my 3DS by getting ahead at buying and selling silver purchased with spare change.

lotto is just for fun, don't try to actually use it as income

Yea, gold. If he wants to buy it now and watch it decrease in value and freak out for the next 7-8 months, and hope that the murky derivatives market that speculated he'd be scalping a small percentage of profit by the end of 2013 is correct.

I invest for the future. Everything I'm putting money into now is something that I'm hoping for a return on in 5-10 years.

Like Stocks in stuff like Johnson and Johnson, I got into Ford when it was cheap, etc

Lol yeah they are definitely still cheap as compared to always over priced GM, but I bought when everybody was taking the bailouts and it was assumed Ford would, and I think it was something like .50 a share. Don't remember exactly.

Ford's lowest was around $1.70 in 08' or 09' I believe.

I may have just found the answer about this.

A week ago, I decided to play my first scratcher. I made a decision that if I won something, I would keep playing but if I didn't, that I would quit. Well I played it and won nothing, of course. But I noticed something on the ticket.

Here in California, there is a Replay program where you can input losing lotto tickets into a drawing and every scratcher with a replay logo can be admitted. So I've decided to to do this: I would pick up any losing tickets people just throw away and enter them to the drawing. Here's the amazing thing about this. People play scratchers everyday and they play them by the dozens. Everyday, I find like a hundred of these tickets just laying around, being thrown away in trash bins and even on the floor. The convenience store near my home is pretty much a losing ticket factory. People play them so much, I'm surprised they never heard of this Replay program. But I take them home and input them into the online drawing. It's been 6 days and I already have over 500 tickets input into the drawing. The allotted time to input losing tickets is 3 months. So if I keep up at this pace, I could have near 9,000 tickets put into the drawing. Now the odds are still against me but the fact that I am not spending a penny on these tickets makes this a sweet deal to me. Plus I keep finding wining tickets as well. People throw away tickets that win another free ticket and I once found a ticket that won 5 bucks. This could be my chance to win!

It's fine to buy lottery tickets here and there. But don't speend too much money on them. You know the saying for gambling "house always wins" the same can be said for lottery tickets.

You should consider yourself quite lucky to even break even.

Any legitimate lotto scratch company or whatever they are called does more than just breaks even and they do not even have to rely on good luck.

It's probabilities
