If you're buying new, there's really no need to see it in person as far as Amazon is concerned. Release day shipping takes care of any problems you might have with waiting, and their generous use of giftcards for pre-orders are nothing short of amazing. I'm not going to really discuss the finer points of buying used online because there is always that chance of getting a poorly treated product. That being said, it really comes down to cost vs convenience when buying used.

you've pretty much summed it up right there.

With that being said, if there was a local store that sold new games I'd buy from them if only because they don't make a whole lot off of them unless they go above the MSRP. Just one unsold game out of 10 new games completely eliminates profit at MSRP. More than 1/10 creates profit loss. It's just hard to compete against a company like GameStop, which has had its own distributors for a few years now (which means they make even more money off of each game sold at MSRP). Most big box retailers either have their own distributors within the company chain or are willing to be loss leaders by drawing in large numbers of sales.

EDIT: Most companies it looks like this:

Developer/Publisher (sometimes the same, sometimes different) sends game to get pressed. From there, the game is sold exclusively to distribution companies, who then sell the games to retailers (like best buy, gamestop, etc).

GameStop maximizes their profits by having their own distributor, which means they buy the game for less from the Developer/Publisher, then sell it to themselves to make marginal mark up in stores. Even if they have unsold stock, they can write it off as a loss because of the deep discount given to distributors. It's (probably) the future of game sales if digital distribution doesn't take a bigger foothold.

If companies would be willing to make the same money on digital goods that they are on physical goods, they could push their content directly to consumers for less, and in the process probably attract more sales because of the cheaper initial investment.

I go in to Game Stop buy one and only one thing and they try to sell me the entire freaking store and BEG me to subscribe to this or that newsletter or magazine or rewards card or to preorder whatever upcoming game.

No thanks, I'll just go to Best Buy.

Best Buy is slowly working toward GameStop's model. They started by taking in pre-owned games, and now they're moving toward a dedicated, blocked off game section. It's almost going to be like a store within a store. I'm sure they'll have their own discount card, pre-order, and magazine soon enough.

I don't sell my games and rarely buy pre-owned ones unless they are vintage, which GameStop and BestBuy don't deal in anyway.

Best Buy already has a rewards card, which I already use.

As long as they don't harass me to get stuff I didn't ask for and continue to sell their new games at reasonable prices, Best Buy is always going to be my first choice.

What's wrong with Gamestop? Oh, man, you got me, that was good. Wait, you're being serious? Oh, well then, let me answer that for you. Everything. The prices, the stickers, the gutted and pre-owned games they sell as new, the employees, who, while not all of them, but most, are complete idiots when it comes to gaming, like, the constant nagging at you to buy used or sign up for one of those cards, and the sheer ignorance. For example, I went in to buy some JRPG collectors edition, because I'm a sucker for them, and I asked if he had any other collector's editions in the back, in some smug tone, he asked "Oh, what are you trying to do?" I'm trying to buy games asshole, damn. With all that said, there are times you can find a good one, they are rare, like, complete Earthbound rare, so enjoy it while you can.

If you've read my comments, you would know that none of these "problems" that you state don't irritate me all that much. As long as I have a working game, I'm cool with gamestop or any other retail store.

I SUCK AT GAMES

I just dont like when they pester me for pre-orders. Its cool if they ask me once, but after that shut up and finish my transaction. I don't want them to list a bunch of games coming out this year after I say I dont want to pre-order anything to begin with. Not sure why anyone would pre-order from them to begin with when most games sold on Amazon come with a $10 or $20 credit...

Another thing, I only buy from their bargain bins and don't utilize any of their other sevices. But considering they charge people (or at least use to) for having jacked up looking discs, why not use that money and actually get the discs fixed? It annoys the hell out of me when I get sold a game that clearly has a deep circle grinded into it from someone knocking their 360 over while it was playing.

Aside from that I don't have many issues with them. I primarily do my game shopping on Amazon.

Well I think gamestop doesn't sell new games but only used games! My definition of a new game is still in the original packaging, still SEALED WITH all the papers including the clubnintendo rewards code that HASN'T BEEN used! They can't just call there games new if they take em out of the sealed case! For all we know they could be buying used games with light scratches...... have it resurfaced to appear brand new! Anybody think of that!

Sega Does What Nintendon't

I get all my new games from Amazon, the rewards and Amazon Prime is so bad ass if you buy a lot of games I dont know why you wouldn't get them from Amazon. I got a new copy of Bayonetta for the 360 from them and it came sealed but when I opened the game there was no game disc inside and Amazon exchanged it no questions asked. I dont think Gamestop would of did that.

I stopped getting new games at Gamestop when the stopped selling new games but rather started pawning off opened games as "new".

I still stop in there from time to time to check out the used stuff but I always open up the game and check it out before i leave the store.

I went to my local gamestop just yesterday. They forgot to remove their Walmart receipt in one of the "new" game cases. I laughed

To be honest, I think most of you guys are just being nit picky and angry over little things. Not to take a shot at my fellow gamers but, I hear complaints like "They annoy me with pre-orders and edge cards, or they have stickers on their cases, or they sell "new" games that are not new." None of these problems bother me.

In terms of the cost of their used games, its manageable. I prefer to play the game right away when I buy it, not wait a few days. In other words, I prefer convenience over cost.

About the whole pre-order/edge card annoyance, just say no. At least in the gamestops where I live in, they politely say each question once and I say politely say no. It's not that big of a deal.

Maybe its just my personal preference. I'm probably more of a true gamer than a collector. I'm really not that strict when it comes to collecting. I have cases in my shelves that have gamestop stickers, cases without the cover art, partially damaged cases, non factory sealed "new" games, and any of the games that have no case I put the game in a spare cd case, which I have plenty of. Its not that I don't enjoy collecting but I'm a chill collector. I'm not too picky on the condition of the game packaging.

I understand that you would have plenty to hate gamestop or any other retail store if your a hardcore collector and that every game that is bought has to be mint or nearly mint condition. But for me, I just want a working game.

Just because they don't bother you personally does not make them invalid complaints. It doesn't make you a "true gamer" and it doesn't move other people into a "collector" category. It just means that there are standards that certain people have when buying items and if the criteria is not met they'd rather buy elsewhere.

If I'm looking to buy a car, I'm going to buy the one that's completely un-driven and without wear and tear from an employee driving it home for a week. I don't see how it's different from buying a game. If I'm going to buy a power tool, I'm going to buy one that has the warranty card still sealed inside the box, not one that's been gutted and may have had it's warranty information registered by some unscrupulous thug.

Those may not be big issues to you, but you asked why people don't like GameStop, and they gave you answers.

What. Not to take a cheap shot here, but, most "True Gamers" don't shop at Gamestop. They find deals, I.E off CAG, Kmart, Amazon, Ebay, ETC, so they can afford more games. Gamestop has some pretty lame prices, I can find almost any game cheaper online or at another store.

Take it from a former Gamestop employ.. they are awful...AWFUL.

I like to keep what I own in good working condition, whether it's a game, car, computer, or something else. Gamestop makes that job much harder, so I choose to spend most of my gaming dollars elsewhere.

You haven't bought many cars.

Usually the cars that the employees take home are for fun. and they beat the shit out of them.

Cars I buy I want to buy from an ethusiast who took care of em

I just re-read my comment. Wow I really did sound like a dick. Take the true gamer out. In fact there is no such thing as a true gamer. Anyone who plays video games regardless of where they buy from is a gamer.

Damn, I just say things without thinking. Sorry if I pissed anyone off.

there pretty much is no such thing as a true gamer. we all have our own perks, rules, preferences, and stores. "Unique" gamers is a better term.

Besides, it's pretty boring to be like everyone else :P

I have a great local Gamestop. I know a lot of the employees and have become friends with them over time. Most of them don't really know anything about video games, other than the mainstream games. One guy that works there I enjoy talking too. I find it kinda of funny because I always pre order weird quirky games and they drill me with questions about them. Eventually they might pre order it after I tell them about it. Usually I can get the swag stuff if it is not taken. I might pre order some stuff kinda to do the whole, you scratch my back I will scratch yours, type deal. If the one guy works, and they get some rare games or sought after games in on a trade, I usually get first dibs if none of the employee's don't want them. I am pretty happy with my local gamestop.

I didn't feel like starting a new topic, but apparently GameStop is going to stop carrying GameCube games next month, and the month after that PS2 games. My local GS stopped carrying PS2 games in August of last year, but this time it's a company wide move.

Looks like I"m going to need to pick up the last few titles I need =/
