Motorcycles, Who here rides?

I've been riding and racing for the better part of 15 years with streetbikes, and dirt prior. I'm a major enthusiast, having been involved from amateur to pro-level. Currently, I've backed off racing and focused more on long-distance and sport-touring.

Here's my current steed. 2004 Kawasaki z1000. One of the few bikes I've owned that is so far mostly stock.

in the next 2 months I'm getting a 2011 GSXR 1000, already lowered, stretched with a power commander. All black. That sort of deal.

Oh, and this is what happens when you lay a bike down at 45 mph

RANT ON

That's what happens when you crash WITHOUT the proper gear. I've been on the street for over 750k miles, and have more track time logged than most people have commute time in their cars at my age. I've hit the track at 160+, and I've been injured. I've also seen what can happen, and how crash dynamics play a part.

My suggestion, before you get on a bike you probably cannot handle, is to get some track training, proper gear, and a bike you can actually ride without killing yourself on.

A GSXR1000 is no toy, and is a lot to handle even for pro riders. There is no "I'll just take it easy on the throttle". I can also tell just by the wording in your post and the pics you posted, you have no idea how to handle that machine. Do you know the reasons for the modifications you listed? Do you know how they affect the bike, or are you just concerned with looking cool?

No offense, but if you want to show off, get a Harley and live to tell the tale, maybe.

Lest you think I cannot ride them myself, this machine did 8.90's in the 1/4 and put out well over 200hp to the wheel. Sold it last summer after several years of ownership, to get something a little less mental for touring. My buddies crossplane R1 was a spec in the big Gixx's mirrors. This is one of several that I've owned and built. The fastest yet was my '99 Hayabusa with a VR step 2 turbo at 25psi. This GSXR was only slightly slower.

Look for MSF courses in your area. Some states even offer them free. Show up with a helmet, long pants, boots, gloves, and a long jacket, and be prepared to learn. They provide the bikes and instruction. Once you are done, most states will give you your class M without taking the state tests.

It's also a great intro to riding. You get to try it out without investing in the bike. They do a great job at giving you the basics you need to be successful and safe, but keep in mind, all they are giving you are the tools you need to practice.

Couldn't have said it any better myself. MSF is how I learned to ride--in the rain, no less. For $25 and a weekend of my time, I got my endorsement and learned how to ride safely and responsibly on someone else's bike. You can't beat that deal.

In my state (Ohio), you need to have a learner's permit before you can register, but that could be different everywhere. If you're thinking about taking the MSF course, sign up now! Those classes fill up fast.

Develop good habits early (all the gear, all the time being among the most important) and you won't wind up like ol' hamburger face up above.

Or maybe a friend was maybe too drunk to drive it so I did, and got cut off by a car.

And lol @ no idea what the reasoning for the mods.

Sir I've had multiple bikes, and probably 35 different cars I've raced from a bike to crappy turbo 4 cylinder cars to lifted trucks on nitrous, to mustangs, camaros, etc etc. I'm taking the bike because a buddy of mine bought it, and a basically the situation got messed up so I'm taking it off his hands. Would I choose to do the mods? Nah probably not, but they are done.

The bike will be basically for MAYBE riding to work one day a week, or going to the beach, or taking a run to the florida keys once a month.

Don't assume I don't know things, because it would blow your mind the stuff I've done with automobiles :)

Yup, blew my mind alright. So, you took the bike with no gear, instead of calling, I don't know, a cab? Hell, how did you get there?

Cars and bikes don't translate between each other. You could be Senna, and when you get thrown on a bike, you would still be completely clueless.

I'll tell you where my biggest gripe was. You made the comment "this is what happens when you crash at 45mph". That is a VERY misleading statement with the pics you posted. It leaves a bad image for riding, period.

Had you said "this is what happens when you crash at 45mph, while not wearing the proper gear", it would have been different. Instead, you painted yourself as the typical image-obsessed squid, especially after touting the "I'm gonna get a stretched GSXR1000".

I deal with it day in and day out, and there are many people, myself included, still trying to shed the image of "murdercycle". What you posted does NOT help that.

The idea is to encourage those who have an interest to give it a shot, but do so with the proper preparation, not to scare them out of riding with misinformation.

We were on vacation on the other side of the state and he didn't want to leave the bike at a bar where we didn't even know where it was.

He drank a little too much, and if he even feels buzzed he won't ride the back, so he took a cab and I hopped on the bike ( I'd ridden it before) and it was one of those things where car cuts you off, roads are a little damp. So I corrected to the right and I guess the tire hit the wet paint mark of the outside lane and there it went.

One of those freak accidents.

Now even on the hottest day I refuse to get on a bike without a helmet and vest

Well, sorry that happened.

Sorry I jumped on you so hard. I take it personally when bikes are given a bad image, especially when it's by our own group. It not only affects new riders, but the public opinion as well, which affects the laws they try to push and the insurance mandates. So, from my point of view, what I saw was "hey, this is what happens when you ride". Its a scary blanket statement.

that was my bad also.

Like I said I love speed, but I also love driving down the beach on the Bike. One of the most relaxing things you can do in an automobile in my opinion
