Hey guys, I am starting to get in to PC gaming more, but my new computer always lags really bad when playing most games. So I was looking to get a new graphics card, probably just a cheap one for now until I am ready to upgrade to a really good one. So I was wondering, is this card good for $40 and will it be able to run most games decently? Any help is appreciated. Thanks. ![]() http://www.bestbuy.com/site/Galaxy+-+NVIDIA+GeForce+8400GS+512MB+DDR2+PCI+Express+Graphics+Card/9957955.p?id=1218201192071&skuId=9957955&st=graphics%20card&cp=1&lp=1 Edited by Nick, Feb 20 2012, 02:16 PM.

it will definitely get your feet in the water, but it won't give you "enthusiast" performance. definitely a good start though

Ok thanks, I just want a decent card that will allow me to play some games without so much lag until I can get a high end one.

It won't run most of the newer games that well. Before I upgraded to 2x GeForce GTX 570, I had 2x GeForce 8800 GTX running SLi, and they couldn't run Battlefield 3 properly even on the lower settings. But if you aren't gonna play the newer games (2010 - now) it'll run most things OK'ish, you should really look for a GTX or ULTRA rather than a GS model if you want the best performance, because GS is the most basic model, and since you're already buying an out of date GPU, you'll just be even worse off by buying a GS model. My advice to you would be to look for an 8800 GTX, you can find them used for next to nothing, and you'll get much better performance than with the 8400 GS. But you'll still get bad performance out of new games, since most games now have the 8800 model as the absolute minimum GPU requirement. |

Actually, now that it's being mentioned, what games do you plan on playing? Do you plan on playing simple games like WoW, Team Fortress 2, Left 4 Dead, Counterstrike Source, or League of Legends? or do you want to get into Witcher 2, Battlefield 3, Skyrim, etc which require more beef?

Thanks to both of you for all the help. I've been thinking about it and I think I might just invest in a much better card since I plan on playing a mix of older and newer games.

In that case: http://www.newegg.com/Product/Product.aspx?Item=N82E16814161389 (If you want to go AMD) http://www.newegg.com/Product/Product.aspx?Item=N82E16814130625 (If you want to go Nvidia) Me personally, I'd choose Nvidia. Not to knock off AMD/ATI for any reason. I've just had significantly better performance and graphics with anything Nvidia whether it was in my own computer or using a friend's computer. The card I specifically picked (while not the topmost of the line of the 500 GTX cards) will last you a few years until new cards are made. Oh and before I forget BE SURE TO UPGRADE YOUR POWER SUPPLY!!!! Obnoxious, yes. However this is very important. With both cards, I'd suggest getting anything 650w and above. Like TechnoSqueek asked, what are the specs for the rest of your PC? If it isn't on par with the GPU , it'll slow the GPU down |
