Hauppauge HD PVR tips?

Anyone using a Hauppauge HD PVR to record game footage? I just picked one up, and after a failed attempt to capture some Super Metroid, I managed to record some pretty raw footage off of my PS2. I know that by fiddling with some settings, I should be able to get some nice quality video, but I'm interested in hearing what works best for you guys.

On a related note, can anyone help me record footage cleanly from the SNES? I think I've got the basics covered, but any advice would be a big help. Currently, I can get the video to show up in the preview window, but it's ridiculously laggy and stuttery, and any attempt to actually record just ends in failure: Total Media Extreme just freezes up. What do you think?

Thanks guys!

I would highly recommend a component cable. This is not only compatible with the hauppauge, but will also up-res your last generation games. I know this may not be super helpful, but stick to your set up instructions included. Doing so should get you the results you want.

I could never get it to work with any older consoles, anything other than PS2/Xbox 360, even the PS1 emulation mode via the PS2 was really laggy. I tried NES/SNES and had the same results. I read a little bit about it, and it seems they run at frequencies/rates the Hauppage does not support. I've tried modulating the signal to no effect, but I have heard if you run it through a VCR, it will output in format/signal that Hauppage supports. I have yet to try that.

What do you mean by "lag"? Like the audio is out of sync witht he video or something?

No, it works for like 3 seconds, then freezes and then super fast, speeds up to the current point, then repeats this over and over. This effects the final video output as well as the preview. I have tested three computers with different operating system with the same result.

I've been having pretty good results with the PS2 through component cables, particularly once I bumped the bitrate up to 8 mbps. I still need to do a little poking around and see if I can increase the framerate--it's looking a smidge blurry. If you'd like to see some raw footage that I've recorded, I have it up on my my blog's Facebook page.

Still no luck recording on older systems, but clearly it's possible. This guy is proof:

Test 2 Hauppauge HD PVR - SNES - Turtles IV - Turtles in Time

Right now I'm updating my drivers (both on my video card and HD PVR), then I'm going to contact the manufacturer. I have reason to believe that there are a couple of different hardware revisions out there, some which are capabale of recording a signal from NES, SNES, etc, and some that just freeze up (like mine).

I wonder what Pete uses?

I never could get it to work with retro consoles, it always had issues. I recommend getting a device that would work for retro games.

Hey, i have a question. I recently broke my YPrPB cable connecting my hauppauge and ps3. I instantly bought a new one from the internet. When it came in the mail, i couldn'tn use it. Nothing happened. Does this mean i am restricted to using the provided cables only? It would be greatly appreciated if somebody responded :psx:

I don't think the HD PVR only works with the provided cables. You might want to check your PS3s video output settings and check if the output is set to component (and not HDMI). Also you might want to check if connecting the PS3 directly to your TV works (assuming it has a component input).

I am having this exact same problem @Diesel_Dan. I wanted to know if you might have found a solution yet. I really want to record my SNES gameplays and upload them to YouTube :( . Or anyone at all have a solution?

Thank you.
