Desura is like steam, where you can buy and download games. But I never hear anyone talking about it.

As far as I know, it is a digital distribution platform like Steam, but focused on indie games. It also supports something called "alpha funding" which is a means of allowing indie developers to release alpha builds of their game that people can pay a fee for so they get an early look at the game, and it helps the devs have a source of money to help make the game. Not sure if people who pay for that stuff get the finished product for free or if they still have to pay.

I saw a shmup on their that looked interesting (completed game, not something up for alpha funding). If I wind up getting it I'll post back on my experience with Desura.

Edit: So, I tried the place out, and it's pretty typical of what I'd expect from a digital distribution outfit. Create an account, purchase product. Said product is attached to your account with a CD key assigned to it. Use key to validate game after install, and you're off to the races. The only thing about Desura that is unique is its focus on indie gaming. As a shopping experience it's comparable to Gamers Gate, Origin, Steam, etc.
