I recently picked up Breath of Fire for the SNES. I felt that as I had played through 2, 3, and some of 4, i really wanted to give the first one a go. I popped it in and have been trying to get into it but feel that something is just lacking. The story appears to be the same as the others, Ryu leaves and goes on a journey with his friends to save the world with the power of the dragon clan, however I almost feel as if they added as little as possible to push the story forward. I feel no attachment to the characters at all. I am up the part where you get Bo and honestly do not understand why he was even there or why he joined the group for the rest of the game.

Please take in mind that the only real turn based RPG I've played on the SNES is Chrono Trigger. I played through Breath of Fire II on the GBA so the experience was different. I will still be trying to play through the game as I do find the battle system and seeing how the series evolved to be enjoyable. Does anyone have some thoughts or insight on the game?

TBH I have never actually played this game, but I do own it on the SNES. What I can say is that it isn't considered a great RPG when compared to the other amazing RPGs on the SNES.

Please don't judge the SNES library of RPGs by this game. FFIV, FFVI, Earthbound, and Super Mario RPG are a few I can think of on the top of my head that are widely considered much better games that I think you should look into.

Also, consider the fact that going back and playing an outdated game when you have played the sequels doesn't usually end up with great results. The FF series is one I can think of where that isn't much of a problem, but it could be different in breath of fire, especially if obvious improvements have been made in the sequels and the games feel similar.

In a realm beyond sight.
The sky shines gold,not blue.
There,the triforce's might
Make mortal dreams come true.

Yeah, I am aware that there many great games on the SNES for RPGs. My first post was actually wrong now that I think about it. I have played through Soul Blazer & Mario RPG as well. Soul Blazer is actually one of my favorite games on the SNES. I plan on getting Terranigma & Treasures of the Rudras in the future as well.

I'm still not sure how I feel about it. I'm about 7 hours in and the story still feels lackluster. I can definitely appreciate Breath of Fire II, III, and IV more after playing this one, seeing how much they improved the series after the first. I'm going to keep at it and see if my opinion changes. I would like to finish it since I like the others so much :/
