Any game mechanic that absolutely does not belong in a modern game. This can be for any genre. I will start with random encounters. Absolutely unnecessary, put the mobs on screen. Nothing is worse than a high encounter rate discouraging people from exploration and causing major frustration sometimes. I am a huge RPG fan and a big proponent of this mechanic remaining dead. I don't look at old games and hate them for having this, in fact it is nostalgic, but if a new game uses this that is a huge knock from me. If a new game has a high encounter rate/random battles it can go to hell for all I am concerned. |

QTEs. They are completely overplayed and do little to add to the experience in a positive way.

Awww... I like random battles sometimes, especially in a game like Pokemon. I agree with Austin, get rid of the quick time events! |

Oh, in Pokemon it is fine that sense of surprise is always nice. I really meant in standard RPGs. Monster Catching Games are different I guess.

Nah, I miss the old final fantasy days of random encounters. I hate being able to see the enemy to avoid it or know what it will be. It ruins all the surprise. I loved the randomness factor. |

Regenerating energy really bugs me actually, games would be far more of a challenge if you only regenerated at certain points or needed to pick up health. |

Yeah and it seems to me like a lot of games have segments that are really difficult, or at least require some trial and error, but then have really forgiving checkpoint systems. |

I'm not a fan of random encounters either. I like being able to run away from enemies when I don't want to fight them. The mechanic usually adds a lot of tedium to a game for me, especially running back to town after finishing a quest. I just want to finish that quest, not be stuck fighting umpteen baddies that randomly show up, even if I do successfully flee from all of them. |

I like how the enemies chase you in xenosaga, Random encounters in FF and mega man battle network are good for me cause i get items and level up in FF. breath of fire R E are good too. I hate long cut scenes when you cant pause(MGS) and i hate over used QTE. |

Checkpoints/not being able to save your game anywhere or anytime. Sometimes I'll really want to pop a game in because I have a spare half an hour, but I can't because I don't know when I'll be able to save the damn game. Seems really unnecessary now that we have the technology to do away with it. Just seems like a cheap tactic to give some games the illusion of longevity. |
