Giving Games a Second Chance

We've all had those games we've hated at points, but have you ever sat down and said "Alright game, you're getting a second chance" I've done this a lot recently, 3-4 years ago I used to hate Mass Effect and Dragon Age, now they are two of my favourite series, I'm about to give Red Dead and GTA 4 both a second go. I'm pretty sure most of my hate for these popular games came from me wanting to play devil's advocate back in my late middle school/early high school years, and it just escalated. So, have there been any games you've just hated at first, but gave a second go?

Edit: I used to hate Resi Evil as well, now it's one of my favourite game series as well.

I guess Earthworm Jim is one. I couldn't get into the character, I thought Jim was creepy, I thought the characters and world was creep, so I couldn't get into it. Later I gave the game another try when I wasn't creeped out by the world, and I enjoyed the game a fair amount. Same for MDK2.

Long time ago my friend let me play pokemon yellow I hated could not stand it I found the game extremely boring. Well years latter he was getting rid of some stuff and he gave me the game it sat around on a drawer for a while collecting dust. One day I was bored and I was looking for something to play so I decided to give the game another chance and I fell in love with it.

Same thing happen with Bioshock. Bought the game real cheap somewhere a while back. Did not like it at first but went back to it and now I love the series.

I also do that all the time I try a game out and dont like it at first. It sit around for a while then I give another go and I end up liking it. I think is because the second time around I am more open minded.

There are also games that I don't think I am going to like so I don't pick them up at all and pay no attention to them what so ever. Then one day I stumble upon them at a really good price or is the free game I get on a buy 2 get 1 free sale and I end kicking myself for not picking up the game sooner. This happen with Mass Effect, Prototype and Assassin Creed.

Then there are games that no matter how many times I try to get into them I just cant. Like the Call of Duty series it just not for me. I think is because those games are way to real for my taste.

Well the Disgaea series rings a bell in this category, not that I didn't enjoy the series. It's more or less, giving it another shot (since I only got to play it for a short while at a friend's house.) I have no regrets giving that a second chance, I love the series a lot now.

Also Street Fight Alpha I've given multiple attempts, and I just can't get into it. It's a good fighter, but I just cannot get into it. Street Fighter 2 is much better in my opinion.

Halo, specifically Halo 3. I remember playing through that first level co-op, it was the first time I'd ever played a Halo game and it bored the shit out of me. I gave it another chance and the campaign was pretty fun but multiplayer was where it was at for me. So many great memories of playing that with my girlfriend (now fiancée) and we still break out the multiplayer when friends come over.

I also never really used to be into platformers. I'm a pretty impatient person and when I would run into trouble with tricky levels in platformers, I would get frustrated and give up. For a long time I just didn't think that genre was for me, but over the past year I've tried the genre again and now I really like it. I'm not as impatient as I thought I was, though I still don't think I'm very good at platformers!

Oh yeah man, I played the beta for that game, I remember it being terrible, I played it with some guy, may give it another go, since I never deleted it off my PS3.

I could never really get into L.A. Noire but about two months ago I decided to try it again and I actually beat it. It's a really great game once you understand it. If you don't like it just give it another try. :P

One game in particular would be Final Fantasy VIII.

I first played the game as a demo on that awesome demo disc that had Metal Gear Solid and Tony Hawk, if I recall correctly. That demo rocked and I was super excited to play the real deal. However, the actual game felt so boring to me. I got right up to the parade sequence and just stopped playing it. I hated it. I thought it was the lamest Final Fantasy game at that time.

Years later (Insert crazy 80 future time slip)

In the Summer of '09, I had a good deal of free time while working at Subway, graduated only months ago from college and waiting until August to start my new job in Japan. After playing Resident Evil 4 for the bajillionth time, I had this odd feeling of trying to play through FF VIII again and I loved it. The subtle nuances that I missed as a kid trying to play it, really interested me as an adult. The music as whole is amazing. 'The Oath' is one of my favorites. While it can be a slow game (FF IX is slow, too, but I love that game a ton, too), it was a wonderful experience and I was happy to be able to try the game again and give it a second chance.

I think it's good to give games a second chance, whether you loved it or weren't so hot for it. It'll reinforce your ideas, give you new ones, or completely change your opinion:D
