Why camp out for a new game?

I recently watched a youtube video about a guy talking about why ppl camp out for games. It got me thinking about it. For example when MW3 came out there were so many people for camped out and wanted to be the first one to get it. They waited in the all and and more than likely all the previous day too. I got my copy of MW3 two days after it came out and had to wait in NO LINES, NO CAMPING OUT, AND NO FIGHTING PEOPLE TO GET THE GAME!

You didn't even have to wait two days. You probably could have gotten it the afternoon of the day it came out with no lines. There is almost no reason to really camp out these days. It's just a show and it's all about the hype. Some people just have fun doing that. Not me :D

I'll never, ever camp out for a new game or console, and it irritates me to no end that people would actually waste their time doing this. I was a big dick to someone on here who did camp out for the 3DS (sorry dude), but dammit - do something with your life!

That said, I have attended midnight openings before.

First was for the Wii. I was beyond amped for the Wii. This is in part why I hate Nintendo so damn much now. :D Such a crushing disappointment.

Second, was for Gears of War 3. I have played through every Gears of War with my best buddy. It's mandatory that we get beers in, and play through the campaign. Beers of 3 was no exception. I'd preordered the game for delivery, got the beers in, got a tonne of food ready for when he came round... Everything was set, all good to go. But, no game. It just didn't arrive on release. :( So, wandered about 4 miles down to the local gamestore and queued up for a few hours (while very, very drunk). That was awesome. :D

But no, screw campers. Stop wasting a couple of days by queuing. Life is too important to sit on the cold streets waiting in line.

The only thing I would ever camp out for would be for a new Sega console.

There's really no reason to camp out for games due to pre-orders being so prevalent with today's sales, but I can definitely understand console releases. The Wii was so hard to come by when it first came out that the system wasn't regularly in stock for months. Camping at the front of the line guaranteed you at least one console, which if you could get more than one, was quite lucrative. The system sold for 2 to 3 times what it cost and there was no problem unloading it on someone else.

There's nothing really wrong with camping out, and some people enjoy the experience. Those that do don't need to "get a life," they just enjoy theirs differently than you do.

Midnight releases are about as far as I go, and typically I get my little ticket at 10pm and then leave to go to the bar and come back with a good buzz to get my game.

I've done a few midnight releases in the past but nothing for the last couple of years at least. I just don't have as much time to dedicate to gaming as much and I've predominantly switched over to handhelds in that period.

I agree with helsinki, I might just have to camp for a new sega machine if that ever happened - which, after the recent cutbacks with them, is more unlikely than Microsoft or Sony requiring gamers to buy used games lol

Midnight launches i understand, what else are you doing at midnight? Playing games, watching TV, sitting in the pub around the corner?

Camping out just seems a little silly to me though, no offense to anyone that does of course. I just dont have the time to sit outside in the cold all night to pick up a console or a game, whats the point? So you can be the first to say you played it or be the first to do an unboxing vid?

No sense at all i tells ya!

I camped out for the PS3, and i'll admit, you do feel a little silly in a sleeping bag outside an electronics store..... BUT.... If I hadn't camped out back then, I would not have gotten the PS3 on release, due to some manufactoring problems supplies of the system were very limited in Scandinavia for about the first month or so. Even if I just waited until the next morning it would've been sold out, and hell, even if i'd just walked down to the store an hour before release I wouldn't even have gotten it, so camping out was the only way to get the system on release.

Camping out or lining up for a midnight launch, it's just fun. You meet people that are excited for the same thing, and it's just an experience. That's why people do it.. along with getting the game slightly earlier than some others may.

I honestly... I think MW3 isn't as good as MW2... so I think it was over-hyped...

I've only waited on movie midnight releases. I can never process why people would sit outside the theatre all day for a movie when ordering tickets online pretty much guarantees you a spot inside the theater. I can see myself camping out for Apple products, but never for video games or anything else.

I've never done it before, but I guess that would be a great time to catch up on reading and some handheld gaming. Take some friends and play some card games, multiplayer handheld games, etc. Guess it could be an experience for some. I don't consider playing video games for hours a day necessarily a better use of time. Either one is a waste of productivity time to me, but we all need to relax and enjoy life some. I think these people probably enjoy what they're doing, so it's not for me to say what they should do with their time.

Yea, my guess is along the lines of everyone else in that you are thinking of the practicality of camping out, John. Which, I agree with, is ridiculous in this day and age. I think people just like hanging out all night with a group of like-minded individuals, sharing in the excitement and talking about their love of a particular game.
