So, I'm a huge fan of some older PC games such as Fallout, Fallout 2, and the Command and Conquer series. Up until now, I've been able to get most of these games running thanks to patches, general know-how and some other tricks, without using programs like DOSbox, however, I've come upon a new problem while trying to install an original copy of Command and Conquer ('95 version, not Gold) onto Windows 7 32-bit. The problem is, as soon as I try to install it, I get the error message "NTVDM has stopped working". I've seen this SOMEWHERE before long ago, but I can't remember when, and I can't remember how I fixed it. Anyone got any tips, or am I gonna have to break down and learn how to use DOSbox? I know there has to be SOME way to install the game correctly. And please, no "The game is free to download now", I'm a purist...I wanna play the game as it was intended to be played, and from the disc.

Sup dude.

I think DOSBox will be your best bet. A fair few GOG.com titles require dosbox, so it'll be your best bet.

NTVDM stands for NT - Virtual Dos Machine by the way. SO yeah, DOSBox is your safest bet :)

I had to go with DOSbox too, I used to have a program called slomo or something to that effect that kind of worked but once we got into the Win2K era it became unusable.

I just hate getting DOSbox to work...that's why I don't use it. I'm over the days of typing in commands. And I can't figure out how to INSTALL the game with DOSbox, let alone run it.

Try a dosbox frontend, adds a gui to it and makes it all a little easier to swallow. Here's a list of them if you would like to take a look.

Just general stuff that might work, right click on the main exe. file. Go to properties, compatibility and change the mode to Windows 95-2000. See if that works, if not, PM me.

You could also get your hands on an old PC, you can get them pretty much for free. I got 2 old PCs, one running Windows 3.11 and the other running Windows 95, both of them I got for free.

Your only hope is DOSBox, or to do what lol_pc said as far as I know.
Death is certain, life is not.

D-Fend reloaded is the best front-end i've ever used. D-Fend Download

I've been using it for years now and have been able to overcome most problems i've encountered. Its has very easy to use GUI, and once you have given it the destinations for the dosbox program and made profiles for each of your games you are ready to go at a double click.
